Many sites use multiple options (e.g. PayPal + credit card).
I use CCAvenue.

The Costco/Nova is not an integrated ecommerce solution. I manually run the the credit cards on my machine after getting the orders from my website.

Paypal and PSIGate, I didn't vote though since I couldn't vote for the two options.

I use paypal on some sites, just due to ease of implementation. I checked out moneris a while ago and believe we use them for our non-online processing on my main site. (i.e. rather than taking online orders, customers call with their info. We then approve using an online system rather than a terminal. Fine for certain businesses, and we don't do face-to-face retail).
I was one of the first 1000 businesses to get approved to accept Visa online in Canada, way back in the 90's. It was a mess back then. And while the acceptance process has gotten a bit easier AFAIK the choices we've got in Canada are still far too limited, way too expensive, and not very business friendly. If anyone's got a good solution in Canada, I'm all ears :).

Actually this is an interesting thread.
True a lot of things out there about PayPal, but for someone getting started with no guarantees on how much bussiness you'll get it's an easy starting option.
BTW if OP doesn't mind maybe people can post Payment Processors they use or know about, (except the ones already posted up there naturally), and maybe OP can keep an updated list at the top by editing the original thread.
This is some I have found during my research:
Propay (http://propay.com/)
2CO (http://www.2checkout.com/)
Alertpay (http://alertpay.com/)--if anyone has tried these guys any feedback would be great (they seem to be canadian)
UseMyBank (http://usemybank.com/)--also any feedback on this (appear canadian as well)
MoneyBookers (http://www.moneybookers.com)
SafePaySolutions (https://www.safepaysolutions.com/)
SfiPay (https://www.sfipay.com/)
StormPay (http://stormpay.com/)
WorldPay (http://www.worldpay.com/usa/)

i've worked with payapl, beanstream and authorize.net.. imo, authorize.net is the easiest payment gateway to work with.

The Costco/Nova is not an integrated ecommerce solution. I manually run the the credit cards on my machine after getting the orders from my website. What about the viaKLIX gateway mentioned at http://www.novainfo.com/costco/pos-terminals-software.asp ? There's a list of compatible carts at https://www2.viaklix.com/admin/support/compcarts/cart_list.asp and viaklix.com has a Developer's Guide that can help you integrate it into your website if you're using a different cart.
I've read that you can alternatively use authorize.net as a gateway for that also...

My processor: http://www.ccavenue.com
Bad interface (no acknowledgement screens, small fonts...) but no complaints in the payments department.

Thanks! Haven't figured out a way of changing the poll. Should have made multiple payment methods an option as well - sorry all.
FYI - A buddy of mine has just joined a Canadian merchant provider service but he recommended that I stick with PayPal until the volumes got up.

I had Payment tech before with about the same rate as yours, but I ended up canceling it because it would be easier to have online reporting and transaction history at the end of the year for reconcilation instead of relying on the receipt printer from the terminal and the monthly statement which does not list the credit card number for each transaction.

It would be somewhat helpful if you guys could post the rates you get.

what is the best one to take credit cards online and over the phone? probably not paypal since you need a paypal account so doing it over the phone won't work, which one do you recommend?

This thread is going to be a garbage dump if it turns into another "what's the best for me" thread.
DO YOUR RESEARCH.
A number of good links are posted above. Start by going to your bank and looking at what they offer. Go to Costco.ca and get the Nova brochure. Check out some of the other links here...
You have to consider stuff beyond the actual discount rates. How much does a terminal rental cost? Monthly fees? Extra fees for taking American Express and other cards? Can you take debit or not? Does the provider integrate with an online payment gateway? Is there an amount the processor will withhold for a set period of time to prevent against chargebacks, keeping you from reinvesting that money back into your business?
Alot of the above will depend on how YOU do business. Since we don't know this, we can't possibly tell you which is the BEST.

FYI - the freebooks.com blog (http://www.freshbooks.com/blog/) ranks pay gateway popularity. Authorize.net is the biggie in the US and PSIGATE dominates in Canada. They excluded PayPal and 2CheckOut.
