Hey guys
I ended up with a Civic LX with spoiler. Spoiler cost 648, but altogether I paid carcostcanada wholesale price + 300-400 on top for the dealer profit.
Got 14% tax instead of 15%
Did I overpay?
Also, I paid 850 for paint protection + rust protection. I opted out of fabric protection cuz someone on RFD said I could just buy a can of spray from Walmart or something for like $5.

you already bought and paid for it - why are you posting here?
you need some sort of "validation" - you want to "feel better"?
i don't get it.
paying $850 for paint protection and rust protection is incredibly stupid IMO, and this is something that's already been mentioned in this forum by a number of posters.

Price: Honda offeres incentives to dealerships in Canada so invoice cost isn't very a good gauge of whether not your getting a good deal. You could get $500 off an EX6 Accord? But then again the Civic is a new body style and there selling pretty well.
Protection package: Unless you don't wax your car regularly and wash it often in the winter. It's a waste of money.

Ouch. $850 for the "paint protection". Whatever you saved on the cost of the car, that $850 you paid was $840 profit to the dealer. Let me guess, they sold you this package when you were in the other room with the "finance" guy right?
Here's a tip for all first-time car buyers...NEVER buy the so-called "paint protection" and fabric guard.
But since you've already bought the car, there's not much you can do now. Now use in asking whether you got a deal or now. Enjoy your car and have fun with it.

I am working at a GM dealership for the summer and they charge about 700-800 for rubber undercoat, paint protection, and fabric guard.
The fabric gaurd is probably no better then a can of fabric protector you would buy for $5 at canadian tire. Stuff just comes in a jug and is put on using a hand sprayer
The paint protection is a small bottle and it is applied and wiped off the same way as wax. The cost for the little bottle of paint sealant (does one vehicle) is $23 and takes about 45 minutes to apply. A customer can buy the paint sealant from the dealership for about $35. I dont know it it is any better then a good wax and the sealant is recommended to be reapplied every year
Not sure how much the undercoat costs but it cant be much. Comes in a big tub and is then just sprayed on. The undercost wears right off in the wheel wells if the vehicle is drove on gravel.

am I able to call the sales guy and tell him I want things changed? just bought it a couple hours ago
ie. no rust proofing, no paint protection ($850 total), no spoiler
PS if this is possible, would u guys get a coupe or sedan? Coupe is less convenient, costs $300 more but looks nicer. Not sure what other advantages there are.

It doesn't hurt to try. See what they say. Even thought the spoiler is expensive for a piece of plastic, i would still get it, because a spoiler really adds to a cars look.

So would u recommend that I try to:
1. say I don't want paint protection, buy the can myself and apply it. Honda dealer said they do it themselves.
2. say I don't want rustproofing, go to Krown and get it done for $300 (instead of $600 at dealer)...she said I get 10 years warranty on that but I need to get it checked for $25 per year. The finance manager said that places like Krown and Walmart will just drill holes in the car and apply rust proofing that way, and that the dealer will do it themselves and not outsource the job to a bodyshop.
3. are there any more advantages to the coupe besides the ones I listed above?
4. Don't know where I could get the spoiler if I don't get it at the dealer...any suggestions? I wonder how much I would save

Did you get the coupe? If it would make you life easier to have 4 doors. ie there will often be someone riding in the back get a sedan. If the back wont get used often i would get a coupe becasue they look sportier, but the insurance will be higher on a coupe.
I would get the spoiler, but dont get the other stuff.
Put the paint sealant and fabric protection on yourself and get the rust protection done elsewhere for cheaper. Jsst get it done at a well known place and ask how they apply it

2. Get rustproffing at Walmart applied every year for $40. Walmart doesn't drill holes in their $40 rustproofing. They do in the $65 one.
3. Coupe vs sedan comes down to personal choice.
4. OEM spoilers look better but there are some after market ones for half the price that look ok.

not handy at all (if by mechanic-wise you mean), but I was wondering if I could pay someone to install it for me and how much the spoiler/labor would cost that way

I would just get the OEM spoiler. Will probably look better and you wont have to install it. It would require drilling holes through the trunk

If not, I believe it's quite simple and if it does include the break light, it has to be wired into the rear lighting wire harness (which isn't hard to do). However, why don't you just call a couple of aftermarket automotive places in your area to get a price.

1. you can if you feel you're capable of doing it. Would i do it myself? Nope...i know i will pay more elsewhere for labour, but atleast i will know it was done right, especially since i dont know jack about how to do it. Credit to all who can...
2. He is right, Krown does drill holes, i went to FX auto in Markham, they dont drill any holes.
3. Wow...at this point you're still deciding over coupe vs sedan? Thats what yuo had to do BEFORE you went into the dealership. Either way, your call on this one.
4. I wouldnt even try to get after market ones. Simply personal choice, rather stick to honda related. But surely you have seen the ricers on the road, so clearly you can buy them elsewhere. Next time try to ask one of them...
Extra Credit:
5. If at the end there is something yuo should try to change, i suggest opting out of the paint protection and rust proofing. You havent mentioned whcih dealership you went to, but i can tell you that most ones in the Markham and Scarborough area take their cars to FX. Try asking your sales guy, he might just tell you if they really do it themselves or not.

How much did FX Auto charge for rust proofing?
Does anyone know how much paint protection applied by a reputable bodyshop would cost and where a good place to get it would be?

Can you just back out of a car contract after you've done the paperwork and sealed the deal?
that's what I'm unsure about, as this is my first car purchase.
Reason why I opted for paint protection and rust proofing was because a friend I went with suggested I get it. Also, after I got the negotiated price, I went to the finance woman was like, you have to get it NOW, it can't wait cuz we gotta set up an appointment and it takes a whole day to get it done.
So I assume I can still change it if they let me change the contract, since it takes like she said, a day to get it done.
On ebay, after shipping I can get a spoiler for a Civic 4DR for around $150-$200 USD.
I called the dealer just now, they are not open past 6pm (although the salesman said he'd be open until 9pm today), and they're not open Sundays.
Should I email the guy?

i paid $450 (cash, so it inc. taxes), but that was with tints and rust proofing.
I know a friend who got paint protection at FX...very statisfied. Forgot exactly how much it was, but i think it wasnt more then $600 (tints, rust proofing and paintprotection.)
Rust proofing alone is $250...just go there or call.

I hope the Honda dealer bodyshop doesn't work on Sundays since the answering machine didn't mention the sales dep't being open on Sundays.
I think either way, he will have to talk to his manager about it to approve it, and she may say it's not ok to change the contract since she's making money off of it. But I'll give it a shot.
I should've figured all this out beforehand, but didn't see anything about rust or paint protection on the Civic RFD forums I searched myself. So I was really caught by surprise when the finance manager was pressuring me and saying that it must be decided NOW.

Frankly, I think your SOL. It's very hard to get money back from someone who's job it is to try to get the most money from customers on a daily basis. Again, there's no harm in trying - but I wouldn't get your hopes up.

If the spoiler does not come from the factory, you should not get that. Also, the add-on spoiler can easily be the target for thief. My friend got his spoiler stolen and he parked his car in his driveway of his home and the driveway is facing a major street.

Yes, it's always someone in the finance department that will try to pressure you into buying the paint protection.
So that everyone knows "paint protection" is such a general term that you don't even really know what they will use on it. Most times they will apply a sealant which they claim will provide some sort of protection as long as you come back for yearly checkups. As long as you wax your car yearly (even better if you do it more often) then your car will be fine. No need for any paint protection package a dealer offers. If you want to go buy the stuff and do it yourself at least go buy yourself a decent jar of wax, and a bottle of polymer sealant will cost $20.
Meguiar's #26 Hi Tech Yellow Wax, and Meguiar's #20 Polymer Sealant are two very good products that you can have Canadian Tire or NAPA AutoParts order for you.
That's exactly how it works with car dealers.

Where do these people get this kind of misinformation???
Uhh...so you are saying that the cars WITH the OEM spoilers installed won't get rust either? That's a stupid generalization. The holes will have some sort of grease applied to it to prevent rust, and then the spoiler installed. Even the ones installed from the factory. There's no additional risk of rust if a spoiler was installed from the factory or after by a dealer.
Usually Honda offers their cars in several trim levels and the spoiler is always an option ('Si' or top models usually have it standard though). If you like it, get it. Or buy the car without the spoiler for now, and you can always order it and install it later if you still want it.

When we bought our 2nd car last summer, the business manager was using the high pressure tactic of making us feel that by not buying the extras, we were making a grave mistake. However, when she found out that she knew my brother who worked for Honda's head office in the senior management capacity, she backed off.
