VW bashers, leave this thread alone.

Volkswagen of America will lose hot-selling diesel models of several of its most popular cars as the automaker catches up to new federal emissions standards that take effect this fall.

VW will drop the diesel versions of its Jetta, Golf and Beetle models for the 2007 model year, which begins this fall. The new U.S. limits for nitrogen oxide emissions are among the most stringent in the world.

Like the article says, it involves U.S. emission laws and Volkswagen of America. The news may or may not affect Canada.

I doubt they would pull the TDI models out of Canada. The TDI models sell far more in Canada than they do in the US. Canada is more European-like where small vehicles and diesels are popular. Besides...it's only termporary...they'll be reintroduced in 2008.

I heard that they will sell "2007" models as "2006" models so that they can bypass the new regs.

Like the article says, it involves U.S. emission laws and Volkswagen of America. The news may or may not affect Canada. It applies to all of North America.

Part of the reason for pulling the TDI's is that they are switching from their unit injection system to the more popular common rail injection for the 2008 model year vehicles. Rather than redesign the emissions system once to meet new regulations then put a lot more into redesigning the injection system a year later, they decided to do it all at once.

I work at a volkswagen/audi dealership, and we have been told that they are being pulled. I wonder how they'll manage to reach the N2O standards, especially with the high compression/high heat diesel engines.

Damn....what's going to happen to all the tow truck drivers with no new VWs on the road?? :cheesygri

Seriously though, the NA market seriously needs more diesels - not less. I'd have had a Honda diesel long ago if they'd sell'em!!

Some nice news for diesel fans: The Audi R10 placed 1st and 3rd in the 24 Heures du Mans

I guess the Mexicans that build them don't worry too much about the environment.

Well it's not the "Mexicans" that don't care but the big oil companies. Due to the sulfur level in Diesel in Canada in the LSD (Low Sulfur Diesel) is 500ppm the CDI engines are unable to run on this dirty stuff (or wouldn't be able to run for very long time on it). Now that the ULSD (Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel) 15ppm is available in Canada (June 1) they can introduce the CDI engines.

The new emissions regulations are being adopted by Canada as well, so VW won't be selling them here, either.

No worries, though, they are overstocking 2006 models, and the diesels will be back in 2008 when they redesign the common rail systems to conform to the new regulations.

VW dealership told me the diesel engine will come back in 2009.
