This past week, my dad brought the van (2003 Chevrolet Venture) in for an oil change to a friend that's a mechanic. When he is working on the van, he notices that the intake manifold gasket is leaking coolant. He then tells us there was a big class action lawsuit in the US becuase it was a huge widespread problem, and that if we didn't get it fixed, the leak would get bigger and eventually lead to engine cooling problems which would cause damage to the engine.

So I research online and find that this is indeed a big problem and that there is a class action lawsuit forming in Canada for the problem. Luckily however our van is still new enough that it's under warranty, but the problem is that if it wasn't, we were originally quoted approximately $1000 to fix it from the dealer as it takes 3-4 hours to do this job. So for those NOT under warranty, it would be very expensive to fix.

The problem affects these cars:

* 1995-1997 Buick Riviera
* 1995-1998/2000-2003 Buick LeSabre
* 1995-1998/2000-2003 Buick Park Avenue
* 1996-1998/2000-2003 Buick Regal
* 2000-2003 Buck Century
* 2002-2003 Buick Rendezvous
* 1996/1998-2001 Chevrolet Lumina
* 1998-2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo
* 1997-2003 Chevrolet Venture
* 1999-2003 Chevrolet Malibu
* 2000-2003 Chevrolet Impala
* 1995-1998 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight
* 1995-1998 Oldsmobile Eighty Eight
* 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue
* 1996-2003 Oldsmobile Silhouette
* 1999 Oldsmobile Cutlass
* 1999-2003 Oldsmobile Alero
* 1995-1998/2000-2003 Pontiac Bonneville
* 1997-1998/2000-2003 Pontiac Grand Prix
* 1996-1999 Pontiac Trans Sport
* 1999-2003 Pontiac Grand Am
* 1999-2003 Pontiac Montana
* 2001-2003 Pontiac Aztec

Has happened to both of my parents cars just recently actually.
My dad drives a 1997 Oldsmobile LSS (pretty sure thats the correct year) and my mom drives a 2002 Grand Prix GT. Expensive fix :(

GM like the other two members of the "Big 3" just don't get it. They cheap out on quality, piss people off who vow never to buy their products again, and then wonder why their market share is slipping.

I have a 16 yr old Toyota Corolla that I use to drive to work every day. I guarantee had it been a "Big 3" product it would have gone off to car heaven a long long time ago.

We had a 99 Pontiac Trans Sport - we ended up having to replace the engine because of this! It's long gone (we traded it in as soon as we could after it was fixed) Back when this was happening to us there were already stories coming out that this was a huge problem - we called GM and they basically told us too bad.

Anyway we will NEVER buy another GM - ever ever ever. Their customer service is disgusting and their vehicles are junk. I really hope they end up having to pay out for this - it's too late for us (vehicle and proof that we paid are long gone) but I really hope they end up having to make it right to the thousands of people that have been screwed over by them.
