I just purchased a NEW 2005 Mazda MPV GS with GFX & Sport packages for $9800 off MSRP at Prima Mazda in Woodbridge On. (paid just under $24K for a vehicle that lists at just over $33K.)
Yes the vehicle is almost 2 model years old - it was actually assembled in July of 2005, but it only had 15 kilometers on it - i.e. it was BRAND NEW.
If anybody is interested - my salesman told me that they are also stuck with three BRAND NEW 2005 Mazda 6's that they are looking to sell at a very large discount to get rid of them.
IMHO since we keep our vehicles for 7 or 8 years, I couldn't give a damn that the van I bought was a year old. BTW it came with full OEM warranty anyway!

that's a great deal. nice job!
but, just wondering, since this vehicle was presumably "on the lot" for almost a year... worried about any effects the environment had on the condition of the body, engine, etc.?
or was it kept in-doors?

It was sitting outdoors when I saw it. Initially we went to purchase a 2006 (I did the APA thing, got the cost price etc and offered $200 above dealer cost in an email to every Mazda dealer within 50 miles of Toronto). The Prima salesperson was the first to reply to my email and I went on the Saturday following to make the deal. While I was waiting for him to finish with another customer, I spotted the 2005 on the lot - it was marked down from $33,385 to $24,595 + freight & pdi. - I offered with freight & pdi included and they accepted. The final invoice came out to the nearest thousand dollars + $465 so I threw my Mastercard on the salesman's desk and said round down the price to the thousand and we have a deal - so I actually bargained them down an additional $1465. :cheesygri
This has to have been the best car deal I have ever made! :D
I then claimed my $1273 in Citibank Driver's Edge Mastercard Dollars making this an even better deal!
When I picked it up - it was washed and waxed and there seems to be no degredation to the finish of the vehicle at all. The only problem - the colour of the vehicle would not have been my 1st choice - but when there's a deal like this available, I can learn to live with the colour!

when a car is just sitting there for a yr, the inside of the engine could easily rust/degrade... u cant see it even if u opened up the engine. the car need at least to run once in a month...
well, i think the MPV is gone after this yr, so it's the final yr for it. the resale values r gonna be very low.
but if u are happy, that's makes it worth while.

Wife wanted an MPV - we didn't care that 2006 is the last year for them. In some ways, buying a vehicle at the end of the life cycle of the model may be a good idea for those of us who hold on to them for a few years - by the end of the life cycle the manufacturer has most of the bugs worked out.
As far as rust in the engine - we took the 7yr 160K km extended warranty - so I'd say we are covered for any contingency.
As far as resale values, 7 years from now - the vehicle will only be worth a couple of thousand anyway regardless of whether it's a current model or not. And IMHO a 7 yr old Mazda is still worth more than a 7 yr old Ford/GM/Chrysler minivan.

Very good deal, make sure oil change is done as the cars been sitting for quite some time, its good idea to take it to mazda and have them put in the break in oil and new filter just to break the engine in and have good oil, not oil thats 1 year old.
Tranny oil also should get changed.
Other then that, congrats, a discontinued car does not always drop in price and sometimes has higher resale value. But this is an mpv, I strongly doubt that ;).

Awesome deal you got there; as much as I love Mazda 6s... I'm just a lowly student.
I would agree with you--resale for a Mazda MPV is probably higher than resale for a Caravan after 7 years.

Only if I had known last Saturday I would have gone to Prima to check out the 3 2005 Mazda 6's they had. For a reduction like 30% I would not care much about it is an older model, even though the 2006 Mazda 6 has been re-touched a bit inclduing the engine and trasmission. I just went to their site and looked for the Mazda 6's and it seems to me that they only have one left--a black V6 GS. Too bad, because I already made my purchase of a 2006 Mazda 6 last Saturday with the help of APA. : (

To those who don't know the Mazda 6 is considered one of the most unsafe vehicles on the road for 2006.

For any prospective van owner the MPV is discontinued model. If you love it great. But it's on the way out there is the Mazda 5 (ballooned Mazda 3 platform mini van/car), there's a reason for the huge discounts the dealership they knows what the car is worth.
Best new family sedan for '06/07 is the Toyota Camry and the upcoming Accord.
Best minivan is the Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey.
This is common knowledge.

Aside from gratuitously promoting Toyota and Honda, two companies which do not need YOUR help destroying their competition, what was the purpose of this part of your post, exactly?
There aren't two automakers out there. There are a whole bunch. People should go check them out, and buy whatever they happen to LIKE, not what some biased import-loving "expert" claims is the "best".

The article just does not tell the whole story. This paragrapph comes out from Edmunds.com:
"Safety:
All models come with four-wheel antilock disc brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and traction control, and whiplash-reducing front seats. Optional on i models and standard on s models are front-seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. In government crash tests, the Mazda 6 received a perfect five stars for frontal-impact protection. In side-impact tests, the 6 earned just three stars for front-occupant protection and four stars for rear passengers, but the vehicle tested did not have side airbags. In IIHS frontal-offset crash testing, the Mazda car earned the top rating of "Good." In IIHS side-impact testing, it rated "Poor," but again the vehicle tested did not have side airbags."

If the Mazda 6 is equipped with side air bags and curtains, then I think the score for side impact will be greatly enhanced.

We know that the van is discontinued. That's why we rushed to buy one. There are only 3 choices for short minivans in the market place right now. Chrysler (no thanks), GM family (plastic intake manifold problems) and the MPV. We considered a Mazda 5 - it was too small for our needs and there was absolutely no space behind the 3rd row seats when the seats were not folded down.
Best minivan is the Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey.
This is common knowledge.
No arguement from me. The MPV is my wife's. I drive a 2004 Sienna.

There's an AD in the paper for a 2006 MPV with touring package for $21,995.

That is the base model. The base model has to have the crappiest upholstery I have ever seen. Slightly better than bedsheet cotton.
The one I purchased was the middle model + the sport pkg + the trim pkg. Dealer cost on the middle model was $27,900 according to the APA before the trim packages are added in.

The Sienna and Odyssey are monster huge. There is nothing "mini" about them anymore. Bigger than most full-size SUVs. Some families just don't need that kind of size. The MPV meets the need for a mid-size minivan.
Take a look at any 2-3 year old Sienna or Odyssey. I'll bet you at least one of the corners are scraped. They are a ***** to park.
