A buddy of mine is looking to purchase a warranty plan for his 99 VW Golf. He sent me this website and asked me for my opinion... has anyone ever dealt with these people (company)? Or does everyone just go to the dealer and buy the "factory" extended warranty?
Any useful comments/opinions are appriciated. :cheesygri

If you end up looking at other warranty plans, avoid FADA-Guard aka Ryan Waranty Service like the plague.
They attempt to find any excuse and loophole to avoid playing claims. There is an exclusion clause in their contracts that allows them to refuse a claim for parts that fail due to "environmental damage" (parts that corrode, are water or road salt damaged). They attempt to use this to even weasel out of such common failures as serpentine belt tensioners.
Also, they are slooooow to pay the claims they do honour. My local Ford dealer is getting pissed off to the point that soon they are going to refuse to accept service work without pre-payment.
Fortunately for me, the warranty ended last week. (We sold the vehicle shortly afterwards).

I cannot imagine what kind of warrantee your friend could get on a 7 year old car that would not cost a tremendous amount of money. If he/she just recently bought the car from a car lot or dealership, that is who they should be talking to.
My experience with the aftermarket (non OEM) has not been good because it is up to the dealer or mechanic or shop to argue the points with the warrantee company. More often than not we lose.

www.carbuyingtips.com says there aren't any online Canadian extended warranties worth bothering with. There are several in the USA, but nothing cheap and good in Canada yet. you're probably best off getting one from your dealer. it'll cost a bunch, but they likely won't give you any BS.

The one I had, and can't remember the name of, took 3 months to replace the engine in my Firebird. They're out of business now, can't possibly imagine why ;)

It's basically a question of the better of two evils. Personally I've found dealer/manufacturer extended warranties the best. For example, I bought a Chevy Venture minivan from a Honda dealership, they threw in a warranty ($500 I believe for an extra year). Warranty was covered by Honda Canada. Thankfully a major coolant and manifold leak occured roughly at the same time leading to a costly (in the region of 2k repair).
Naturally they were difficult, asking me to pay for it then claim, but I managed to get the dealership to do the work and take care of the claims.
