2 Japanese favorites of this forum, Mazda and Subaru, did very poorly on JD's test. Any ideas why?

And to think, Hyundai used to produce nothing but complete garbage!
Now their cars are considered to be just as reliable as Toyota and have been for years now.

Lexus and Toyota models continue to dominate initial quality rankings, capturing 11 out of 19 segment awards in 2006. Lexus models rank highest in every segment in which they compete. In addition, the LS 430 ties the Porsche Cayman for having the fewest quality problems in the industry. Other top-ranking Lexus models include: IS 250/IS 350, ES 330, SC 430, GX 470 and LX 470.
Toyota remains a quality benchmark, capturing five model-level awards—for the Corolla, Solara, Camry, Highlander and Sequoia—more than any other non-luxury brand.

um..not really. IQS is not reliability. e.g. jaguar makes decent IQS number but freefalls in actual reliability (aka dependability)

Regardless, Hyundai have made HUGE strides in improving their cars. It's pretty amazing how far they've come in only 10 years or so (if that) while GM and Ford can't seem to figure out what the hell they are doing.

GM had been on the way up in JD Power initial quality, though they seem to have fallen quite a bit this year. Must be the new Buick models driving them back down...

The problem is, when GM sells average priced quality cars, nobody buys them because they think of GM = low quality.
So when GM lowers the prices, they run into one of two problems, the cars are low quality, or they don't make any profit.
They have really fallen hard over the last decade or so.

They've been falling hard for 25 years :) It just happens that for most of the 90s, the SUV boom covered it up... (at $12K USD profit per truck-based SUV, you can cover up a lot of problems in a business...)
Ironically, it's unarguable that they've major quality improvements over the past decade or so... and yet sales just keep tanking. Reputations are hard to overcome in this business. It doesn't help that most people simply assume Japanese = high quality, GM = low quality, which is a tad too simplified... (or Japanese = fuel efficient, GM = guzzler, which in segments other than econoboxes often isn't true at all)

You did read the article (or the bottom of the chart)?
You cannot compare any previous years to this one, their methodology has changed.
You can basically gleam that like usual GM is average (with Cadillac being the exception).

Okay, so I'm busted :P I mostly just looked at the charts...
Under the old methodology, Cadillac and Buick had been in the top-10, if not higher than that... what's odd is that now Chevy is ahead of Buick.

I'm looking at getting an '04 car soon.. been out of the "car loop" for a while now, and I'm FLOORED that Hyndai is considered to have a good reputation now.
