This is the grant I'm trying to apply for:
Anne McMaster OSOTF Grant

Awarded to a student in a Major or Specialist program in the Department of Geography, at the discretion of the Chair, for such costs as departmental field trips, field courses, professional experience courses, independent research expenses, etc. Financial need must be considered. Academic merit may also be considered. Awarded three times a year in compliance with OSOTF (Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund) guidelines whereby grant recipients must meet the financial need requirements: students must be deemed eligible to receive OSAP (Ontario Student Assistance Program) during the academic sessions in which the grant is awarded). Apply to the Chair, Department of Geography, by June 1, October 1 or February 1.

Does anyone have any samples of letter that they have written that were successful or know where I can get them? I tried googling but I couldn't find any letters that were of relevance to what I needed. I know that I should include my expenses and income, but I don't know what else to write. I have never written a formal letter before, so any help will be appreciated. (This letter will be sent through email to a prof and I have till Fri to submit it.)

These are very competitive studentships. Even though they suggest that the applicant's GPA may not be taken into consideration, it definitely is.

You should explain clearly that you will be continuing in the program and how you would intend to use the funds and how that would enrich or make your specialist program better (I take it you are at UofT?).

My best advice is to have a grad student in the department or a post-doctoral fellow read it over for you and make suggestions/comments. I do the same for undergrads/grad students in biology specialist programs. It helps if there is a course or symposia that is internationally recognized that you are applying for.

Good luck. If you don't get it don't feel bad. There are only a few spots given out to each department at each school in each province of Canada.
