I personally use Zoom Player Standard (http://www.inmatrix.com). It supports divx, xvid, ogm, ogg, mp3, mp4, mpeg, wmv, wma, and pretty much every other media type you can think of.

I've also had experience using Windows Media Player (classic versions aswell as the newest version, 10 I believe). I don't like it as much as Zoom Player since WMP seems so cluttered with useless stuff that Microsoft packed in there.

Other media players I've tried are BS Player and VLC Player.

Let me know what you guys use for your movies/tv shows/anime/pr0n, whatever!

I'm on a quest to find the best media player out there! :)

MPC for single audio files and videos..... WMP10 for my entire collection of mp3/video/MCE05 TV recordings, and for syncing them to my PMP.

Used to use ZoomPlayer/VLC/BSPlayer/Winamp for various stuff, but not anymore. I still use winamp (classic), but only as the embedded player that runs beneath the RoadRunner frontend of my car's PC.

Agreed. Especially good for .iso and .img files as VLC can play them without mounting them. If you add "real alternative" codecs to the mix, then WMC will play everything that VLC can't and vice-versa.

Zoom Player. It can actually use the back/forward buttons on my mouse to skip forward/back 5 seconds. It didn't seem to work with other players the last time I tried them.

Up to now, I have used Winamp and VLC. There were some features Winamp had that VLC didn't, and vice versa.

I just tried GOM Player and it is really special. It is my new favourite because it combines the playability of files from VLC with the unique features of Winamp (even DFX).

GOM is definitely worth a try. There's a reason the program is so mysterious and the webpage doesn't say much about the program: the founders want it to spread solely through word-of-mouth. Make sure you take a few minutes to tinker with all the settings before using it. I had to set the priority level for it to high in order to use it well. Once again, the program is well worth it.

I look if it can play 95% of the files I use first then how it play them. If it's not functional to my taste it does not matter if it can play non standard files.

That's why I use MIV, it may not play all of them but it work for with my big 5: AVI, MPG, DVD,MP3 and WMV. Plus, it can start another player that I configure into it.

If I have a .MOV, it will launch Quicktime Player or if it's a .Divx, it will start Divx Player because they are the default applications on my system for those extension.

It's work in hybrid mode. Front end/ media player.

What I like is that I can resume playing a media file(video or podcast) from any computer in the house. That's rare.

Zoom Player. It can actually use the back/forward buttons on my mouse to skip forward/back 5 seconds. It didn't seem to work with other players the last time I tried them.
The other thing, is I can use the wheelmouse to advance/rewind 5 sec or click on the 30 sec skip for commercial/show intro. ;)

And when playing in fullscreen, then the look is much less important to me.

I still keep VLC in the rare occasion that the file is corrupted.

But most players don't work well if your seating far from the computer. The control are often too small. MIV has big controls.

Check is out, they have a free(no nag) and registered version(30 day trial). After the trial, it keep's playing with a few less features like resume or parental control. It's very affordable and you got free upgrades. I even got version 2 at no cost. It's also canadian company :D

I heard good think of Theatetek also. They are canadian based also.

If you prefer your player(free or not), you can configure it so that MIV will launch it for you. Useful if just bougth a media/DVD player software. Use the free version has a frontend for to launch the files.

BS Player is my player of choice on my HTPC but never leave home without VLC. It'll play damn near everything. Now if they could only get reall fullscreen controls working on it... (that have the gui pop-up when you move the mouse of the side of the screen doesn't count)

Sigh.

Try GOM Player. It has the playability of VLC with assets like on-screen controls, volume scrolling and preset fast-forwarding and rewinding.
