Good day to you all little earthlings,

I have been reading information on demagnetizing CRT TVs (I read http://straylight.cso.niu.edu/repairfaq/sam/crtfaq.htm#crtmdg0).

I would like to ask for your expertise or suggestions on degausing a SONY KV-40XBR700 TV. It is a 40" CRT and it has a variation of colors - green, red and blue at the bottom and top of the screen, and it is NOT in warranty anymore. The middle of the screen looks pretty normal. The TV has not been dropped, as far as I am aware. It is the degauss that seems permanent. I have tried leaving the TV connected and running for 1 minute, then unpluged it for more than 20 minutes to coold down, but this does not help.

I would like to degauss this CRT TV using a small or medium degauss coil (instead of a large one), but I am not sure what degaussing coil would be considered a small one (vs. a large one). I have read that it may aslo be the yokes - I am not sure what are those, and whether I could safely check to make sure the yokes the yoke magnets not fallen off? What about the degauss thermister, are those safe to work with and if they are moving and not connected, can one safely solder them back? I am a little weary of opening the back of the TV and fiddling with electric stuff.

I was thinking of perhaps also calling a few technicians and wonder how much the repair (or the adjustment of this TV) may be. I have having a technicial in and then finding out that it cannot be demagnetized (degaussed) and that it still costs me $$$ just for him looking at it. It may be a temporary issue, or it may actually be a permanent one.

I would appreciate any input or suggestions you may have to get this running again.

Turn the TV on for a minute then turn off for one or two - repeat many times. Every time you turn the tv on it should have a deguass circuit in it that degausses the screen. It is not super powerful - thus the many cycle times. Maybe do it a couple of times and then give it a rest for a while to let the degauss cct cool. What is causing this anyways - is it near a microwave or some other heavy magnetic field? Or has someone been at it with a permanent magnet??

As far as I am aware, no one with a permanent magnet has been near it. It was visible after transportation. It is possible the yokes in the back might have been moved from their original position. Who knows. I may open the back I guess if it is not a big deal in placing the yokes in their original position - if that is safe and anyone can do it.

The item has not been dropped. There is not other magnetic, etc interference in the zone.

I may try doing as what you have suggested - turn it for one minute, turn it then off for a minute, and turn it on for one minute again, etc, etc. When I turn the TV on, I do not hear a loud and strong demagnetization (as you hear in say 19" CRT monitors). I hear two clicks or so, and do believe that the degauss may be taking place, but I wonder whether that is true at all.

Long time ago, my younger brother did this to my parents TV.

the only way I was able to fix it was to take another strong magnet and use a sweeping motion to take the discoloration out of the TV.
