Go to www.rondomusic.net . Their "SX" brand of bass guitars is awesome and they start at only $99usd. It'll cost you a little more since we're in Canada but it's great bang for the buck. I started off with their p-bass and still love it.

You can find reviews on www.talkbass.com . Search for "essex". THere's a 300+pg thread on them.
