#1 question ... Budget ?

And can you list some 'big' programs please ?

Honestly, this is not the best time to spend big bucks on a brand new computers. Quite a few good things are due to come out in a few months time.

My suggestion is wait a couple of months until the Intel Core 2 Duo come out. Preliminary benchmarking is showing a massive performance gain from P4 and AMD64.

AMD is coming out with a new socket in a month or so as well.

Both of which mean new, fancy stuff is on the horizon and today's high-end parts are going to drop rather substantially in price.

But like Willy said, you need to come with a budget, and whether you play games or not.

If the main game you'll play is oblivion, then check out this videocard performance comparison guide for Oblivion:http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2746&p=5 .

For CPU, go for a 4400, or AM2 4400 (if you can wait a month or two)

To go against the grain here a bit, just remember that when new things come out, they will be pricey, but the good thing is other things might drop in price. It is an endless cycle. But I think a good time to aim for is right when school starts. Good luck.

actually based on the pricing of the Core 2 Duo that i've seen on the internet it will not only out perform amd's offerings but i will be CHEAPER TOO!

hopefully the mobo prices come down though.
