I'm new to cell phones, when people say they need to unlock their cell phones, does this mean the simply need to punch in some code for the phone to be unlocked?

How easy/hard is it to get accesss to these codes?

for nokia phones Series 40 and 60 i believe that only code is needed to unlock your phone but if its a BB5 there's no way to unlocked the phone yet...

sony ericson - from my experience from my past T610 you need to have a cable dongle to unlock it and use aan unlocking software

The unlocking procedure is different for every phone, and often for each new version of the phone firmware. The cellular carriers who subsidize the locked phones don't want you to unlock them easily, so they work with the manufacturers to constantly change the unlocking procedure. If you enter an outdated code the phone may lock up permanently, a deliberate tactic they employ to discourage unauthorized unlocking attempts.

Sometimes the unlocking procedure is as simple as entering a code, but more usually these days it requires a special data cable which triggers some pins on those complicated multi-pin ports on the phones.

Caveat emptor: People who promise to unlock your phone usually want the money up front and give no guarantees that they won't trash the phone accidentally. Make sure they know what they're doing with your specific model and version number.

Why do you need your phone unlocked? Do you plan on travelling or switching providers?

Unlocking can be a HUGE pain in the butt.
I'm still trying to track down a proper cable to unlock my own Sony Ericcson 608i. I bought the unlock software but no cable :(.
