is there any good ways to get a replacement for a 40gb 4th generation hard drive?

i've looked on ebay and a few other sites and the best i could find is for about $150US, plus $20US shipping.

also, i've been looking at ipods with cracked screens. are those hard drives usually still pretty good?

Let me put it this way:

"Why is the screen cracked?"

I've dropped my fourth gen iPod several times onto relatively hard linoleum and both the hard drive and screen still work perfectly.

Therefore I can conclude it will take a lot to break the screen and when that happens chances are the hard drive is crap as well.
You just can't see the error message on the screen.

Browsing the apple website, they offer a flat fee repair of your iPod for around $250 CDN. I realize it's not much of a deal, but you will get a completely refurbished and tested ipod with a fresh battery.

You could try going to your local apple store and get them to quote you an updated/lower price, since the $250CDN price was on a webpage that hasn't been updated since about 2004.

Ofcourse you can just buy a refurbished ipod from their website for the same price and keep your old one for parts/experimentation. ;-)

P.S.

Please let me know how it works out for you since I'm in almost the same boat. My second iPod is third generation with a noisy hard drive, missing line on LCD and a weak battery. I'm still trying to decide what to do with it.
