I just noticed that the Linksys WRT54G is on sale at FutureShop for $45 after rebate. Best price I've seen on this router since the last dell deal. Even hotter if you can get a version 4 or less.

Very nice deal. However, if anyone wants this router, DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE GETTING IT. A lot of people have had various issues with it, so you'd be best to know what you're getting yourself into. It's a good router if you take the time to read about it.

If you get V5, the newest firmware solves most of the problems you likely heard of. It solves all the BT issues.
It's a great router, I have zero complaints.

I've upgrade to the new firmware with my v5, and it works better and I haven't had the amount of issues I've had initially with the 1.06 firmware the 1.09 works charms... but indeed its a very good router for previous versions but the v5 still needs better firmware updates hopefully logitech will bring it out... good deal for this router.

logitech ????

anyways, this isn't a great deal at all. NCIX (http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=17408&vpn=WRT54GL&manufacture=Linksys&promoid=1015) has had the Linux version of this router on sale many times recently and most would consider it a better router.

However, should we even be discussing 802.11g now or looking at faster specs (if if they are currently proprietary)

I can vouch for that. I was having issues with the v5 until I just recently flashed with the latest version of the firmware. All seems to be well now. No more router disconnects or crashes.

True, the GL is better if you want to run DD-WRT on it, but otherwise it doesn't really matter. I bought the GL version myself.

Hmm I just bought this router. How and the world am I suppose to tell what version firmware it has and how do I upgrade?
I find routers a bit confusing, hard to tell whether its really doing anything. Granted I am only using this as part firewall with one computer and also using it with my PSP as an access point.

How do I tell what version?

Oops after all that I have version 5.2 :)

What kind of firmware you guys use with v5? Third party or official firmware?

I bought a v5 from FS, it disconnets quite often, so annoying....

Read with upgraded sw V3 and V4 can run QoS to give top priority to VOIP phone (I have Vonage).

Seems this is V5 so is QoS available?
If not what the best router for QoS (wire or wireless)?

Third party firmwares for the GL offer options only found on expensive routers.
Like "advanced" QoS for sharing internet on multiple computers.

The stock linksys firmware has QoS but third party firmware such as DD-WRT gives you more QoS slots and better QoS.

Using the latest HyperWRT+Thibor firmware. Tried DD-WRT but had some issues with it.

You don't have a version 5 because Thibor won't work on it.

WRT54G v5-v7 ...not compatible

Didn't say I was using v5. But thanks for clarifying as I should have mentioned that I was using V3 in my original post...my bad.

Anyone here found a V.4 or lower in any of the GVRD Futureshops? I only see V.5's.

If you want a v4 (or one that works with the 3rd party firmware) you should check out the WRT54GL at NCIX for only $5 more

Does any of FS, BB or Staples carry the v4?

I've tried to find on here in Hamilton for the past month or so but haven't been able to find any. Although, I have seen a few WRT54GS v4s around but I'm not willing to pay the premium for that. I think it would be pretty hard to find a v4 or earlier now since I believe the v5s have been out since October of last year. GL with your search though.

I've an old SMG 7004 router (great 5yr+ workhorse, never had a problem, worth the $150). Anyone know if getting this router and using QoS will improve my Vonage service. At times there's some feedback and noise. Annoying but tolerable. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I see this as 89.99 - 20 = 69.99

Was the sale only 1 day long?

Looks like they changed the price back. I'll change the deal to dead.

Anybody wants to buy it?
Real cost is $74 - $20 Rebate = $54 (not just $45, ha ha)

I will probably return it this weekend as it doesn't solve my weird Sympatico problem (no more than NetGear or other routers I have)

At Wal-Mart, all LinkSys Wireless-G products have fallen to ~$50 (or $47.something).

Not as nice as the Linksys, but Staples has a D-Link for $39.95 (http://www.staples.ca/ENG/Catalog/cat_sku.asp?CatIds=&webid=576117&affixedcode=WW). Saw the same deal in store.
