Pretty sweet price...

http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0926INGFS10048341&logon=&langid=EN

2x T4905 Radios
2x NiCd Battery Packs
1x Charging Stand
1x Power Adapter
2x Belt Clip

Coolest feature is its scanning mode.

It scans thru all 22 channels and decodes the sub audible tone, so that you can communicate with the person it locks on to.

From my house (Vancouver side of knight street bridge) I can clearly hear lock into the Night Market Staff on Channel 7 sub code 25.

Ended up being < $30 bux after tax.

Add: Oh btw, the sensitivity of this radio is amazing, i was picking up whole conversations when my coworkers uniden was only getting static.

Enjoy!

as a lover of 2 way radios, 4.8km is frustrating..

i have a 19km, the highest available to consumers.. in a city it's only 3-4km.., so unless you intend for close range use or use in "The Wild", it's not suitable..

Philelmo, what model radios do you have? if you dont mind me asking????? and are they worth buying???? I operate amateur and cb radios her in Toronto, but would be using these for snowmobiling up noth were there would be less noise!!!!

Remember this:
The distance shown on the box is the MAX distance that it can operate at, and usually it is a straight line between the radios with no obstructions in the way.

Now if you went snowmobiling and there were trees in the way or if you were on the opposite sides of the mountain,or if it was snowing, then the distance will vary quite a lot. But, I'm sure it beats being in the city (especially downtown) with huge steel skyscrapers everywhere, and thick cement walls!

*Note: I have been monitoring the price of FRS/GMRS 2 way radios for over 2 years now and the price don't change a lot. Unlike computers, these don't really go out of date quickly if at all. The only thing that will change about them is the size and distance. To increase distance, you just increase power output(I think, correct me if I'm wrong), and if you increase it by a lot, then the radio will not be a radio anymore, it will have to be a cancer box!
And for size, I think that this size is good, anything smaller and you will sit down and say "Aww Crap! Now I need to buy another 2-way radio!" (If you know what I mean ;) )

If your on 2 different sides of a mountain you wont hear eachother no matter what.

To increase range you can do a few things, A) As mentioned increase power, but Industry Canada limits power output of FRS to 0.5 watts, and GMRS to 2 watts. Most handhelds wont use more than 1 watt due to the fact it KILLS batteries. B) Increase the selectivity and sensitivy of the radio, as I mentioned before my these motorolas could hear a message my coworkers uniden could not, therefore it more sensitive. This is usually the difference between cheap and expensive radios. This doesnt use as much additional power as increasing the RF power.

Being in a forest does attenuate your signal, but being downtown is a different matter, most buildings these days have coatings to reflect sunlight etc. these coatings also reflect RF signals. Unless your IN the building and thats a whole different story.

BTW Some lady lost her wallet at the night market, there was about $200 bux in it... OUCH...

So are you the one who lost it or found it?

Anyways, you can probably make it more sensitive by including a HUGE attachable antenna. Some people opened up an itrip and attatched more wire to the transmitter so that it was a stronger signal and less interference.

Lets just hope in the future we can just communicate telepathically over long distances. :D

i wish i could get a hold of the government/commercial radios.. which use cellphone waves? not sure.. think they can go extreme distances..

push to talk looks cool too, haven't looked into it

I bought CT 89.99 GMRS Motorola which are 19km (2 watts).. if they come up with more, i'd buy it

like others said, if you're in the outdoors camping, the range they say pretty much applies

in cities, 19 km becomes 4-5km, so 4.8 probably becomes 1.5KM? or less

I bought it to keep my gf on a leash, hehe. Actually for safety and better communication, but i'm thinking PTT on cell phones now. Anyone have experience with this? I believe telus mike is the only one offering in Canada? maybe bell

Hehehe, I wish, I was listening to the Night Market Chatter...

In a regulatory point of view, modifying the antenna would uncertify the use of that particular equipment in canada.

And the Cobra being 3watts wont ever be sold in canada unless they change the rules.

I understand FRS is free, but I am a little confused about GMRS. From what I have heard, it is illegal to use the GMRS service on these radios unless you purchase a license? Is this true?

These sound like a good deal for the price, and Im looking for some for team mountain bike racing. However, I would prefer NiMH over these NiCD.
Anyone seen a good deal on good range NiMH radios?

You only need license if you are in the U.S., they are paranoid so you need a license. In Canada you don't need a license, because its a FREE COUNTRY :cheesygri , just don't go into the US with them. Else they will think you are a terrorist and that you are from Iraq, eventhough you are white or chinese.

If the radios Tx power is less than 2 watts, no licence is needed.

These come with NiCd Battery Packs, but they can use 3 AA. I'm using my costco sanyo 6AA pack.

Thanks, good to know 3AA will fit, but then you need to carry around the battery charger and pull the batteries out every time. I would prefer charging NiMH in the radios using the cradle.

I assume your talking about the Cobra PR4700 radios. I tried to look it up on the Industry Canada Radio Equipment List (REL) and didnt find it. Thats the 1st hint its not certified. Then I tried to find out the wattage of this radio, and its very odd that cobra lists the wattage of all their gmrs except this one. Then I found the product manual for it, and noticed, that this GMRS requires a FCC license to operate. If I'm not mistaken anything over 2 watts requires a license in the US.

From the above I feel those stores are probably not legally selling those radios.

Why not just get a cowbell. With kids., they'll just end up muting the sucker as it is the GAYEST sounding alarm. I know if I was a kid playin' in the playground., I'd be so embarassed to have that thing go off., and my mom say "Come on in honey, wash your hands and do you wee wee quickly-Suppers Ready" lmao

I've a set of the Costco (tiny T4500 unit uses 3AAs, set of 2 with 6AAs for 15 bucks last Xmas) in every car. Great for shopping when you would rather not be in the toys section. Great for camping. The small ones have limited range suitable for managing kids cause you really don't want them to be 19 or worst 25km away. I returned my 19km unit which was twice the size/weight of the T4500.

As to who's the boss NOT answering translates to the child would rather be within eyesight rather than ridding around with friends. Treat the radio conversation same as if you're in person so don't say anything stupid and respect them by first asking if it's OK TO TALK. They'll then love these radios for freedom and security.

I don't seem to be able to include a scanned image from the front of my new cobra pr4700-2 wx vpc radios (Couldn't find the browse button to place image). But it does say "up to 25km", and I was not able to find a wattage rating in any of the literature. These units cost me $99 at Future shop and I bought them today (May 29)

Costco has this Cobra (http://www.costco.ca/en-CA/Browse/Product.aspx?whse=BCCA&topnav=&prodid=10285841) on sale this week for $25 less, 16km, NiMH, looks decent to me, can anyone find me a better deal with comparable features?

"Costco has this Cobra on sale this week "

Picked up a set yesterday at Costco.(the Cobras)

It's 10 bucks less instore. So $54.99

It's a good price for a pair of 2 watt radios.
Includes NIMH batteries, charger etc.
You can also use alkaline AAA's at a pinch. ( Would get expensive though )

Couple of months ago, Costco made an error and had some 3 watt Cobras for sale.
Unfortunately when I went back a couple days later all the stock had been removed.

really? another $10 off? same model? does it require the $25 rebate coupon?

snow
Jun 14th, 2006, 01:39 PM
Yes, it's exactly the same package.

For some reason Costco online prices can be higher than in store for the identical item.

In store the Cobras are $79.99 regular price,
So $79.99- 25 coupon = $54.99

I had a coupon but I saw the cashier had a copy of the coupon book and was scanning that for people who didn't have a coupon. You have to ask though.

I've also noticed the identical computer system being $100 less instore, compared to online.
