How nice of them. I guess they hope this will discourage new moms from putting much effort into breast feeding, if she has difficulty with it at all, sure would be tempting to have a nice free kit of formula sitting right there in front of you. After all, boobs are the competitors of formula sellers.
Isn't breast milk the ultimate freebie, after all? ;)

I signed up for this a long time ago. I got $20 off in Similac formula, a decent little diaper bag which I use in the car, and a bunch of other stuff. Well worth it. I recently got coupons for the stage 2 formula although I won't use it :P

i agree! the only thing with president's choice is that it is darker than other formula and stains baby's clothes very easily. other than that, it's great stuff.

Only 5% of women can not physically breastfeed. Most others just choose not to, give up without trying to hard, or don't get the necessary support the need.
My point, though, was just that a new mother is more likely to give up trying to breastfeed if having problems if they have a 'welcome kit' from those nice formula companies.

If anyone feeds this crap to their kid they should be put in jail on child abuse charges. Ever heard of using breast milk?
Do not use this genetrically malformed bullcrap! DO NOT BECOME A PARENT IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW TO TAKE CARE OF A CHILD.

Did you ever stop and think that the baby is so hungry that the mother runs out of milk until the next feeding 2 hours later? Now what?
What about mothers who have twins, or triplets and not enough milk to go around, not to mention nursing 24/7.
You don't know what you are talking about, so get off your high horse and shut up!!

No such thing as 'not enough milk' for 95% of new mothers, that's a myth. Just a convienent excuse to stop breastfeeding for those who are not really that into it. Other excuses I've heard are 'it takes too long', and 'I don't want saggy boobs', among others. The 'not enough milk' one is just the easiest.
If you really believe that a woman's body doesn't compensate for multiples with milk production, then you clearly are not very knowledgable about the physiological aspects of breast feeding. The body can not only handle multiples, it can adjust the temperature of the milk for each child. If you have a new baby while still breastfeeding an older one, your breasts will supply the appropriate nutrional needs for each, even of feeding at the same time.
It's really an amazing thing, I suggest you learn some more about it.

Do any of you who talk like this have kids at all? ever hear of lactose intolerance and just fatigue from other factors? Its great to say those things but most people with that type of attitude hurt people who are trying to do their best raising kids. I take full advantage of every sample and coupon received for my kids.

Yes, I am a parent as well. I'm not trying to guilt anyone for their choices, only presenting the facts of why they often do so. I personally don't care what anyone else feeds their children.
How does 'fatigue' play into it, though? You're too tired to hold your child to your breast, but not too fatigued to prepare, warm, and feed your child with a bottle?? I don't get it.

Mother's milk is the best option (it was designed for babies). Mothers can store some in a baby bottle and put it in the fridge also.
But, there may be cases where the mother cannot breastfeed her baby for some reason (injury or if they are on certain medications) and this might be okay.
If I were a mother (I'm a guy), if I needed to use a breast milk replacement, I would do it only when it was totally necessary, not as an overall replacement.

I agree with the breastfeeding is the only option stance.
Hospitals are "pushed" by these baby-food companies to recommend their patients formulas over breastfeeding. These companies have a very bad track record, a lot of pulling products of the shelves.
Try everything, inlcuding paying another women to breastfeed your child than using a formula.
Chances are your child will turn out okay on the formula, but there will be unknown genetic damage for several reasons; formulas don't pack nearly as much stuff as breastmilk, and babies are more susceptible to a bad product than anyone else. The Risk is not worth it. Remember, for some reason, societies that have been reliant on baby forumlas for the last 40 years have a greater infertility problem.

If you read the posts above someone mentions 5% of women CAN'T breastfeed. We tried everything, spent hundreds on the highest end pumps and everything. My wife cried and cried feeling like she was a lousy mother because she couldn't breastfeed. And the reason she felt like that was because of thoughtless pieces of SH*T like you. Not everyone is perfect, but I guess you just illustrated that point beautifully with your thoughless comment.

That may have been the case at one time, but it certainly isn't now(at least in Ontario hospitals). Hospitals now encourage breast feeding quite strongly, even the pre-package they give to expectant mothers has lots of info promoting it.

This is the reason I distance myself from extremist comments like the one made by crazyfound. While I think that science has clearly shown that breast is best, I also don't think that formula will hurt your child in any way, it's just that you will likely miss out on some of the benefits of breast feeding.
I feel for your wife, I can imagine how hard it must have been to want to nurse, but not be able to.

There are 30 reasons to breastfeed and not use formula
http://72.14.203.104/search?q=cache:R9iGUOVgWPUJ:systems.cs.colorado.ed u/kolina/advantages-of-formula.html+BENEFITS+OF+FORMULA&hl=en&gl=ca&ct=clnk&cd=1&client=firefox-a
food scientists would be the first to admit that there are about 100 components of breastmilk missing in even the most complete infant formula. Many of these will never be available except in human milk because they just can't be duplicated, or they can't be processed, packaged and shipped. There's just no improving the real thing, and the manufacturers are the first to admit that. In addition, the amounts of many nutrients vary greatly between batches- another risk you don't need to take

My wife was breast feeding and everything seemed fine, he'd feed on each side for 1/2 hour and be asleep by the end, but, he was getting sick and worse every day ...we went to the breast feeding clinic and they weighed him before, durring and after the feedings and determined that after 1 hour of feeding our baby was only getting about 2ml of milk on one side and none on the other, and they instantly started to suppliment her feedings with formula. ...my wife was 100% pro breast feeding, and planned on doing it without formula for at least 6 months, but, things did not go as we hoped ...and the fact that there was a full room of mothers/parents in the same situation that we were in shows me this 95% can breast feed is utter bull. ...Sure my wife could breast feed, but, our baby would starve. ...I bought the best pump and we rented the hospital grade machine and it didnt do squat for 3 weeks. ...in that time our baby had lost 50% more weight than a baby should lose, and was getting jondas, if it wasnt for the suppilment of formula while she continued to try to breast feed i dont know what type of serious damage our baby could have had.
...for many mothers who are breast feeding and think that thier baby has fallen asleep with a full tummy only to wake hungry less than 2 hours later are shocked to learn that it was exhaustion and starvation that caused thier baby to fall asleep.
My wife still crys when she thinks about it because she did feel like she wasnt a 'good mother' when she found out she COULD NOT breast feed because it's something that she wanted to do, was planning to do, and tried to do, but couldnt.
Now, after 4 weeks on formula only our baby has caught up to 'normal' weight and is awake more than asleep and actually excelling.
I do hold disdain for mothers who never try, but, do not dare ever tell a mother who's tried to breast feed and could not that she's anything but a good mother!!
...and this "Myth" of yours is BS ...there are some lazy women out there, but, I know for a fact that if it was up to men to breastfeed, there would only be bottle fed babies. There is no way that men can do what women do.

I do have a child, he just weaned himself off the breast a week ago, at a year old.
So your wife was maybe one of the few who could not breastfeed, what's your point? The fact still remains that not enough support is given to encourage breastfeeding and solve problems, so women throw in the towel when they get frustrated, even though they might have made it work. With your wife, maybe it was just stress, though, and it could have been resolved with a good nursing coach who didn't just resort to the bottle, who knows?
Are you aware that nearly all newborns lose weight for the first couple weeks? Our boy did as well, quite a bit more than normal, and the doctor had my wife go to hourly feedings around the clock. He quickly started putting weight on after that!
You say that a room full of new parents struggling with breastfeeding is proof to you that 95% can't do it...has it occurred to you that people who don't have problems don't go to the breastfeeding clinics? It would only be women having problems with it there, so your comment is not true.

The hospital in Peterborough pushes breastfeeding really heavily and the health centre here has follow ups to ensure that the breast feeding is going properly. I've had 2 or 3 different doctors now suggest to us to supplement breastfeeding with formula specially during night feedings so that the mother can get a little bit of extra sleep or just to top off the child during those periods where milk production is lower. I've got 3 healthy children and we've breastfed 2 of them and one of them was botle fed so I think that it really depends on the situation. My wife's grandmother had 7 children and by the fifth child she just refused to breastfeed anymore and I don't blame her. I'd rather see parents to who don't breastfeed their children and treat them with love and nurture then than parents who breastfeed their children but neglect every other part of their development.

I guess you didn't read the rest of the thread. Here's the summary...very few women can not physically breastfeed. For those majority who CAN do so, yes, they have a choice, they can give their child what is proven best (breast), or what is second best (bottle). Why would any woman who is able to choose second best over best??

For moms who give bf'ing a serious try, they should feel no guilt if it doesn't work out. I just wish some moms who don't even try, would at least give it a try. Formula is a subsitute for breastmilk, but they just can't replicate all the qualities of human breastmilk unfortunately.
I was a bit uncomfortable about the idea of breastfeeding when I first became pregnant with my now 2 1/2 year old, but after reading that breastfeeding would decrease the risk of SIDS, I never looked back.
Breastfeeding can be very demanding and hard on the mother, but it does get easier. When you are at a point where it seems like all your infant wants to do is breastfeed, it's usually because they are going through a growth spurt and it does pass. And if you are experiencing pain, check your babies latch. Breastfeeding shouldn't hurt.
I usually sign up for any formula freebies even though we never used formula and just donate the formula.
The Similac cheques can also be used for Pediasure or Pedialyte liquid and freezer pops? I just can't remember the exact name of that product. The name is on the Similac cheques.

give me a break people (especially those who are commenting who DON'T have kids and/or will never have to try to breastfeed)!! These posts for formula always invoke comments from the "breastfeed" only camp. If you have a problem, start a thread in off topic instead of making people feel like they're bad parents b/c they can't (no breastmilk, lactose intolerant, preemie too small, etc) or don't want to breastfeed!
I breastfed my daughter for about 4-5 months before my supply totally dropped to almost nothing. You can say whatever you want, but it's a choice for the mom/parents to make NOT outsiders who have nothing to do with your kid! I understand the good intentions?!?!? but some people just don't have the choice and/or have already made a choice so just live with it and find something else to do or advocate!
I'm really tired of having to read through all these posts (not just RFD) from pro-breastfeeders, etc who judge people and i'm sure a lot of the times they'll never be in the position of whatever they're judging! Just wonder what they would do if by some chance they couldn't breastfeed!?!!? hmmmmm???!?!?!? have you ever thought of that........or would this NEVER happen to you!?!?!?
for parents who are looking for other formula and other freebie links, check out this post (http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=86264)
