Can anyone tell me what the error is.
I think this is hillarious.

Japan's National Printing Bureau announced today that 39,500 of the country's newly redesigned 1,000-yen bills, which feature sophisticated security features that prevent counterfeiting, contain ERRORS that prevent vending machines from reading them. Authorities won't specify what the typo is, but say banks will exchange them free of charge despite their obvious collector's value.

Wow, and u can jus check by putting it in the vending machine (unless u have both bills and compare them, granted its not something to small to notice in much detail) That is gonna be worth alot..

darn I had some of the ones pictured. This will be very big problem. Japan is a cash society and all the vending machines there take paper money.

The error is that the vending machines can read them.

Looks like someone forgot to change the ink cartridge. The ink is running and smudging causing a rainbow effect :D
Here's a cool little optical illusion trick. Stare at the guy for a while then look over to the centre of the bill where the white blank space is; you'll see a silhouette.

Read the links. A printing error (that for security they won't go into detail) won't let vending machines read the notes.

If you hold the note up to the light you can see an image of him in the blank space.

Its really not that big of a deal. It is still valid, it is still real and they're almost identical. The only difference is that some (I'm guessing not all lol) vending machine can't read it. Thats it.
I think the error is in the new kind security system they put in.

Find out how vending machines determine what bill is inserted and you will be on your way. Critical thinking :) .

When they introduced the new $5 and $10 dollar bills here it was in the news that some vending machines weren't able to read them, I dont remember them replacing those bills, I heard that they just told vendors to update their machines.

We have maybe a few thousand vending machines in Canada that take $5 and $10 bills.
In Japan there are tens of millions of vending machines that take bills up to 10,000 yen. Totally different situation.

However Typo = printing error.
