View Full Version : Receipt storage

I keep my receipts for purchased items if they have a warranty or if it's an important purchase... I put those receipts in a file and just store it in a box.
But I find that sometimes ink on the receipt fades significantly. So if a receipt for a mattress with a 20-year warranty is already fading after a year or two, how bad will it end up being 10 years down the road when it might be needed?! :?
Is there a better way to keep receipts so they'll survive for a longer period of time??

I Photocopy all my important receipts. They are pretty much just like fax's, they'll fad completely after a certain amount of time.

Hmmm... I guess I should put my scanner into action. No fading with that option. :)

Laminate them.
Make sure they aren't thermally printed receipts.

And keep them in a cool, dry, dark place, with as little air exposure as possible.

i keep my receipts in an accordian file/briefcase. it sort of works but you have to remember where you purchased your item from when it comes time to dig them out. my dad puts his receipts in the credit card statement envelope and writes on the outside if its a major item (ie dvd player). either way its just too much paper :(

receipts on thermal paper don't have much of a shelf life. the company that I work at requires that all receipts submitted for expense reimbursement must be photocopied and stapled along with the "thermal paper" original.

Scanning is the way to go, for example my safeway receipts from 2-3 years ago are nearly illegible (thermal receipts blah)

BTW there's no reason you can't scan the receipt AND save it.
If they "require" your faded out original, so what? You can still include a printout of the original scan.

Personally I like to frame them, you know show them off a little.

Scansoft's PaperPort is a good application for managing scanned documents like receipts.

Here's a new way to handle receipts. Neat Receipts (http://www.neatreceipts.com/home_main.htm) The software helps organize them into categories you set up.

im thinking about taking hirez pics with the digicam and keeping the files sorted on my computer for backup and sending them to gmail with all useful info in the contents of the message (for easy searching)
thats what i do with all the mail in rebate documents b4 sending them..much more easier to deal with then photocopies..one one ocassion i was able to email the images to the rebate ppl when i had issues with delays.
also thinking of doing this with the cards and contents of my wallet, so if they ever get lost i can easily have a copy made with all the info handy...
might consider RARing the files with a password and then sending them to GMAIL thou (u never know who's reading ur mail!)

Anything that has to last longer than the current tax year gets scanned. Everything else just gets dumped in a file folder.

All you really need to do is just photocopy the receipts (NOT grocery store receipts).
Plus, you can just use a normal scanner.

It's the software and the portablility that can make this worthwhile for some. I suspect that the CCRA will follow suit with the IRS and allow submitting electronic receipts. So for anyone that needs to track receipts for deductions on taxes or expense accounts this may very well be the easiest way to go...

man, SOME PEOPLE. People get shitted on for starting duplicate threads., then people get shitted on for bumping OLD threads...it's a loose loose situation.
I'm glad this guy bumped a 3 yr old thread...I think I bumped a 1 or 2 yr old one about the stale chips lol.
---END RANT.
So yeah., my FutureSlop receipts have faded...I'm gonna do some serious scanning.
Wouldn't it be awesome to take in a completely faded receipt and use it for proof of purchase. You have your copy but you don't show it. Then they say they can't read anything on it...so you say..that's not my problem...deal with it. LOL...okay that wasn't so exciting... :(
