Esprit Holdings Limited SEHK: 330 LSE: EPT is a publicly owned manufacturer of apparel, footwear, accessories, jewellery, and housewares, under the ESPRIT label. The company is headquartered in Kowloon, Hong Kong. The company has stores in more than forty countries. The ESPRIT brand name is also licensed to other manufacturers. In addition, the Group owns the Red Earth cosmetics brand. The brand was particularly popular in the 1980s (Especially with suburban teenagers)
The company was started in San Francisco in the 1960s by Susie Russell (now Susie Tompkins Buell) and her then-husband, Douglas Tompkins, the founder of The North Face. They were joined in 1971 by Michael Ying. The couple divorced in 1989, and Mr. Tompkins sold his shares in 1990. Later, the Esprit Far East Group bought the other divisions and formed Esprit Holdings Limited in Hong Kong. The company acquired Red Earth in 2001.
The company is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and is a component of the Hang Seng Index. It has been a listed company in Hong Kong since 1993 and has a secondary listing on the London Stock Exchange since December 1998.

VTech (ˆÌˆÕ’B) is the common name of Video Technology Ltd. (SEHK: 0303 , LSE: VTH ), a Hong Kong-based manufacturer of consumer electronics. VTech products include cordless telephones and accessories, single-function computers such as email appliances, and simple computerized educational toys for children. The company was founded in 1976 and as of 2004, had approximately 20,000 employees worldwide. VTech Innovation, which does business as Advanced American Telephones, manufactures consumer telephones under the AT&T name, and was formerly a unit of Lucent, and prior to that AT&T.
In the 1980s and early 1990s, VTech also produced personal computers, including a series of IBM compatible PCs and the Laser 128, which was the only 100% legal clone of the popular Apple IIc computer. Apple Computer challenged VTech in court, as it had with Franklin Computer Corporation, but the Laser 128 had been produced by reverse engineering without violating any of Apple's copyrights or patents and stood up to Apple's legal challenges.
VTech stayed in the personal computer market until the days of the Intel 80486, mostly selling its computers at retail mass market stores under the VTech, Laser, and Leading Technology brand names.

I was a HUGE ESPRIT fan like 15 years ago. But their quality really sucks. Their products never last long enough (by design?) vs. e.g. Calvin Klein. Now I don't even walk into their stores here in Toronto.

Well, if you exclude Taiwan (not a part of China, per se) and Hong Kong (most of the well known companies in HK were there before the Communists took over from the British..).. the only one I can think of is Leveno.
And it's not really their brand that's famous, it's the Thinkpad brand they bought from IBM..

May 9th, 2006, 03:02 PM
Kikkoman
made in Japan
Kikkoman's history dates back to the 17th century in the Japanese city of Noda. The city's ideal location on the banks of the River Edo enabled convenient access to raw materials and prompt deliveries to the expanding city of Edo, which is today called Tokyo. Kikkoman soon became famous for its naturally brewed soy sauce. Before long, the Dutch traders discovered this “black gold” and took it back to Europe. Kikkoman soon became firmly established in the European market, where it received significant awards in 1873 at Expo in Vienna and in 1881 at Expo in Amsterdam.

it's quite sad to know that China doesnt have that many international products. With 20% of the world's population...i guess they rather market their products domestically.
I wonder what famous indian brand products there are.

HSBC is a British firm.
It's a subsidiary that has had its headquarters moved to London in the 1990's
from the HSBC website http://www.hsbc.com/hsbc/about_hsbc/group-history?cp=/public/groupsite/about_hsbc/en/group_history_1865_1899.html
The inspiration behind the founding of the bank was Thomas Sutherland, a Scot who was then working for the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company. He realised that there was considerable demand for local banking facilities in Hong Kong and on the China coast and he helped to establish the bank which opened in Hong Kong in March 1865 and in Shanghai a month later.
It is Chinese, however they don't produce consumer products...
