Here's the thing ...

Shoppers Drug Mart is selling an Upper Deck entire pack/case of cards. The regular "20 Packages with 5 cards each" or what not is included ... for the 2005-2006 Season, guranteed one collectible card (some "special" card, I don't know :p) ...

My question is, especially for me sine I work at one and get a discount, is it worth it to buy a pack and save the cards? I'm just thinking, I'll get some rookie cards, maybe some vets in the game out of all the packs ...
For $20 something, its an interesting proposition.

What do you guys think?

(To note, about half of the packs are now sold)

meh I would do it more so as a collector, value wise, you will probabley never get close to beckett value.

I have a tonne of rookie cards from the 70's, 80's and 90's

I will probabley have to wait until I am 60 to get a very good return on them and who knows how the business will be like then.

maybe by then... there would be a huge war and destruction everywhere and no1 will care about cards anymore... just food and supplies.

It's very tempting, I'll tell you that much. Open up a new box, open up each pack seperately looking for Jerome or Sydney ... exciting :cheesygri

I have no idea why we're actually carrying them to be honest ...

Hrmmm Crosby and Ovechkin Rookies? Could be a good deal.

Possibly, but for about 10 years now since the card craze took off, the card manufacturers have been putting out millions of cards. Cards for Crosby may be good, but with everyone and their dog owning one it's not so much the investment that buying cards once was.

Are you talking about the 'Blaster Boxes'? They sell for $24.99 and have 9 packs of Upprer Deck Series 2?

If so, yeah, those are good. If you're looking for an Ovechkin RC, which sells for about $125 on Ebay.

The Series 1 blaster boxes which are no longer sold were better though, because they had way more rookie possibilities...Crosby, Lundqvist, Richards, Carter, Steen, Phaneuf, etc...

I got a Crosby RC from the UD blaster box series 1 a while back, though I see it on eBay for $10 haha :o

Guess I'll hang onto it for longer...

I also got a Jagr Jersey Card, I would of thought it would cost a bit more then $3 ;)

yeah, it's series 2... you can find the ovechkin rookie in there... which isn't too bad... but it's not a guarantee that you will find a jersey card... those are 1 in 40 packs...

I got a couple and ended up getting more beckett value that I spent (I'll probably never be able to sell some of those cards though)

To note, we have about 2 packs left in the entire store ... out of the 30 or so we had originally ...

Tempting ...

as a kid I found it was profitable, if you have young friends who are into cards

but, now all the $ is in magic & yugioh & pokemon cards

forget sports. you can make tons off the competitive card games

Check the price on ebay... if it's around the same price as ebay, it's a good deal.

In the Upper Deck series for the 2005-06 cards there are many Sidney Crosby *rookies*. Essentially every card of his is a rookie card in way or another.

However, *THE* Sidney Crosby rookie is #201 from the Series 1 set.... so that's *THE* one you want.

The Upper Deck rookies of his are worth the $10-$40 range... but the #201 rookie has a book value over $200.

Honestly unless you love hockey, dont bother. These crosby/ovechkin rookie cards are so overpriced this year because of the hype. At this rate, they would have to play like 10x better than Gretzky to see a major increase in value.

I think if you collect cards you should do it for the fun of collecting... not to make money.

Let's assume for a second that Crosby is as good or even better than Gretzky and breaks his records. All these Crosby cards would be worth tons of money right? I doubt it. Think about what people used to do with cards years ago. They would put them in their bicycle spokes... toss them around and 'play' with them.... store them in a shoebox for keeping. In current days, the first thing you do when you get a good card is protect it. I bet there are very few Crosby rookies out there that are not in some form of a plastic case. Compare that to a Gretzky rookie... how many of those were protected from day one? Not many... so to find a mint Gretzky is extremely rare. However, to find a mint Crosby card... well they will be everywhere and hence the value will not be as high as one may think right now...

Just my 2 cents...
