thats true... they had horrible sport nutrition back in the daY!
they suggested taht players have a huge steak and Egg breakfast b/c the "meatiness" and protien gave them "muscle"
but the truth is... The body utilizes carbs for most of its energy use.

However... Protien is essential in teh diet for many other reasons.

Wasn't there a second half of that sign? I saw it on Sportsnet last night...it read, "Ruth did it on hot dogs and beer! Aaron did it with Class".

Ruth did it in a different era. Less teams to contend with, lighter schedule probably less travel, no specialty pitchers to face against, no blacks or Latinos to play against. By no means am I saying the Babe's record isn't great it's just he did it in a different era. The hate on Bonds is he's an A-hole to the sports writers, fans, teammates (Jeff Kent fight) and a marketing nightmare for the MLB. Perhaps the public would treat him better if he had shown everyone he has class like the late Kirby Puckett.

And, the performance enhanced thing is not part of the reason he is hated?

The thing is all those changes from back then and to now is the NATURAL evolution of the game of baseball. Performance enchancing drugs are not. So I think if Bonds weren't amidst steroids controversy, he won't be getting as much flack as he is even if he was still a jerk.

The substance abuse policy in the major leaques is a complete JOKE...I don't understand why so called 'fan's rag on players who use the stuff, it wasn't illegal.

I can almost bet that certain countries have used stuff in the Olympics in the past and currently and those that have gotten away with it don't get any publicity. Bonds is just an easy target...what I find amusing is that, I wonder if these people with the signs actually think he cares.

I mean, who are the losers here? Bonds..making millions playing a game and allegedly cheating, or those people in the stands who pay money, spend their time to go ridicule a multi millionaire sports athlete?!?!!?

It could've been all the training, the prayers and the vitamins.

It is not about the drug is legal or illegal. It is about lying about it under oath.

and somethign doesn't need to be illegal to be cheating or unfair. Lying about it jsut makes it worse.

For me theres a grey area between training / cheating but injecting/injesting/appling a drug/hormorne into/onto your body is way over the cheating line. The grey area is things like altitude tents, about 10 fold closer to the fair thing then performacing enhancing drugs.

I don't know if there is a test but if Bonds admitted he used a cream supplied by his trainer and his trainer was sentanced to jail because of that, I guess he probably used it.

BALCO, the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative founded by Victor Conte, kept track of Bonds' alleged drug use in detail, with folders and calendars that chronicled everything from schedules and quantities to his testosterone levels. Much of that information was obtained by federal agents when they raided the lab in September 2003.

According to reports in The Chronicle, Bonds testified to the grand jury in late 2003 that he used a clear substance and a cream given to him by his personal trainer, Greg Anderson, who pleaded guilty in the BALCO case last July to steroid distribution and money laundering. Bonds said he didn't know that what he was using was a steroid, the newspaper reported.

In October, Anderson was sentenced to three months in prison and three months in home confinement. Conte was among three other men who also pleaded guilty to their role in supplying steroids to elite athletes.

'Testified to the grand jury" means under oath.

Of course it is, however I'm willing to bet if he was a nicer guy to begin with then the fans, writers etc.. wouldn't give him that much harrassment. Its too bad that when he's this close to breaking Ruth's record and who knows maybe one more season Aaron's that people will remember his bad attitude and that he did it juiced up.

After bonds retires he will probally have more then 800 more at bats the babe ruth had. 800 more at bats for the great bambino and he would of had more then 800 home runs in total, which bonds would never come close to.

and if he had played against the negro leagues, he would have a hell of a lot less than 800

800 more at bats against crappy pitchers.
800 more at bats against crappy pitchers that were tired in the later innings because they had no relievers.
He also played during a time where there were no Puerto Ricans or black people.

Two totally different eras that cannot be compared.

If Ruth had the advantage of today's athletes like training, diet, and yes, even steroids like Bonds, he'd have a fair more homers.

there's no question that what bonds did was wrong, but it is so hard to condemn bonds for what he did when so many others were guilty of the same thing.

apparently, 'nice' guys like sosa and mcgwire will avoid harsh criticism, while a 'jerk' like bonds will go down in history as the posterboy for steroid abuse. i don't think we can have it both ways. if bonds is villified, then so should sosa and mcgwire--and i mean publicly.
