I used to be able to access folders on my other computer but now the folder doesn't show up on my network places.

New firewall in the other system?

try to ping to the other computer ... perhaps it might be down ... check your firewall and reboot the other pc ... maybe no lan connection ...

I had a similar problem.
I just got my network working.
Give this a try.
Open Explorer.
Click Tools>Folder Options
Under the view tab, make sure 'Use Simple File Sharing' is turned on.
It took me a couple hours to find out it was not checked, and it worked perfectly afterwards.
Hope it helps.

Well, I am not sure if it's the properties, I have noticed my computer loads shared folders depnding on what was used last.
If you have XP, click on the side on "View Workgroup Computers" and acces the computer you need from there. And better yet, if you use a folder a lot, once you get to it, right click and map as a network drive, that way it'll get listed on My Computer along with your hard drive.

For me, the easiest way is just type:
\\theOtherMachine\TheFolder
or even:
\\192.168.0.10\TheFolder
This is faster than waiting for the Network Neighbourhood to kick in especially when the system was just turned on.

I don't have a firewall on my other computer. Also I can only see a certain folder called shared docs but not the folder I had originally setup as shared folder on my other machine.

What OS is the other computer running? XP Home, XP Pro, Win2K?
How did you 'share' the folder you intend to share?

Both computers are using xp pro. I shared the folder by right clicking and going to the sharing and securites. Afterwards under network sharing and securities, I selected share this folder on the network and used the default name and clicked ok.

Both are selected as use simple file sharing. I still can't see it in my network places under local network.

Did you try my suggestion? To see if that works.
