Dell plans to triple the number of employees at its recently-opened Kanata call centre, eventually employing as many as 1,500 people at its Solandt Road location.

Dell executives disclosed the expansion plans during official ceremonies to open the call centre, which has been operational since late February. With 1,500 employees on staff, Dell would become one of the region's largest high tech employers, on a level with firms such as Cognos.

The company also plans to add a 150-member sales team to its local operation, as well as services tailored to government and French-language customers.

Local dignitaries and economic development officials who aggressively courted Dell were on hand to tour the new facility and celebrate the expansion.

Company officials were quick to praise the employees who've been on the job now for less than three months.

"Our expansion in Ottawa is a result of their hard work and the direct way we do business, and it's an important investment that demonstrates our commitment to providing customers with the best possible experience whenever they contact Dell," said Joe Marengi, senior vice president of Dell's Americas business unit.

Premier Dalton McGuinty pointed to the agreement between Dell and the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities to train new employees.

"We're proud to partner with global leaders like Dell to deliver leading-edge technology to people here and around the world," said Premier McGuinty. "High-value jobs like the ones announced today will help us continue to build more opportunity for Ontario families and strengthen our future prosperity."

As part of the ceremony, Dell donated ten notebook computers to Severn Avenue Public School. Dell employees will work with teachers and students to maximize their use and understanding of computers.
