View Full Version : Is It Worth Investing in a Satelite System?

Venom

Hey,

I was interested in purchasing a satelite system, although I am new to the market. I heard this is acutally a bad time to purchase into these systems, but I also heard the new Nagra2's are out.

I am so confused.

Can anyone clarify, and suggest some systems to look into.
Thanks

Check out Starchoice: www.starchoice.ca/ or Bell Expressvu: www.bell.ca compare what they offer with what you like in terms of programming and cost. Some channels are available exclusively to each provider.

Receivers have gotten really great especially Dual tuner PVR's. Record 2 shows at the same time, record a show by actor, Picture in picture, ect...

I've got Bell and the menu interface on the newer receivers is georgious: Here's the 5200: http://img67.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=aquiresignal6xh.jpg&cols=4

I assume satellite quality is the close to / same as digital cable - differences ?

Also, wondering about High Definition ...I'm told the upcoming World Cup Telecasts will be in HD...so if someone wanted to upgrade prior to the World Cup from basic cable to one or the other, I assume both would be HD, and both would have the same number of WC games available to view on
satellite or digital cable.

TSN and Sportsnet will show all games in HD.

As long as your provider carries TSN HD & Sportsnet HD then your good to go :cheesygri .

no, television is not worth spending your time and money on, unless you care very little for your mind and body.

and no, you won't be selectively watching smart shows either, degenerate shows will win you over and erradicate your prescious neurons.

ph and venom, if you were wondering if it was economically worth getting a pirated dish or bell system, no. You'll end up paying about the same over a 4-year term. You might run smooth for a few months, a few years, but then you'll be forkign otu money for fixes quite often.

just get the stuff by legal subscription, it's quite cheap if you only get what you want. you'll never have to worry about the system shuting down, no worries about the rcmp breaking your door down either ;)

I love satellite TV. My house has Bell Xpress Vu, which I think is quite nice. The nice thing about satellite TV is the time zoned channels, so if you miss your show, it's usually on the other channel 3 or 4 hours later.

Or even watch them 1-2 hours earlier ;) (usually watch Simpsons at 6pm eastern Sundays on NTV)

Yeah that's really awesome too, b/c, say, if you have to go to bed early, you can still watch your favorite show before catching a few z's.

Bell would be our choice too. The best deals are in Nov/Dec for Bell. We have the HDTV/PVR unit and LOVE IT!

I prefer digital cable, from Rogers. When it rains, it doesn't blackout like satellite, and you can also watch shows in different timezones in case you miss them. Plus, digital cable has a pretty good channel lineup.

Hmmm, i had Bell Express in Vancouver during the winter where it rained every other day. It never blacked out once.

Agreed. We get a lot of snow storms and such, and since we've had it, it only balcked out once or twice b/c of 24+ hours of heavy, wet snow that eventually filled up the dish and covered it completely.

yes, it's great having FTA satellites. I have 119, 110, 91, & 61.5.

They go down once in a while, but it's easy to get them back up again ;)

It's awesome watching the Superbowl with the American $$$$$ ads, instead of the lameass Cdn ones. :D

neither of my expressvu receivers have never blacked out...and i get 'time-shifting' too, just like Rogers

only difference is that I don't get movies on demand...that's the only difference I notice (i've had both)

btw, OP it's satellite...

I'm really thinking about making the move to Bell. I've crunched all the #'s and for TV and Internet it would be a much better value to go with Bell Sympatico and Expressvu. I'm currently renting a HD PVR from Rogers for their cheap rental promo and it is so inferior to the Bell HD PVR i was using in the winter.

As long as the installer did a decent job pointing the dish, there should rarely be any blackouts with satellite. Then again it's always good to adjust it every few years.

Bell XpressVu is really nice. They're having a great deal going on right now out west here, don't know for sure about the eastern provinces. They're currently updating all of their programming, so we get even more channels! :cheesygri

Hahahah. My parents are too technology stupid to do the lockout on my little bro, so I had to. Plus, the channel list is on the back of the clicker.

Our satellite has the whole 700 section as the VNS channels.

FYI

I install for Bell and I did a dish relocate and repoint south of Vancouver today. It was overcast and raining.

I was getting 92% signal on a 4100 receiver. As long as the tech does his job correctly, it pretty much takes a deluge of rain, a violent lightning storm (memories of my time in Thunder Bay) or snow buildup on the dish to knock out the signal.

I've had Bell ExpressVu on and off for 6 years in Thunder Bay and Sudbury, ON and South Surrey, BC. In all that time I maybe lost signal 4 times, never longer than 20 mins and every time was because of strong thunderstorms (memories of Thunder Bay). I've had more outtages with the local cable companies than I ever have had with ExpressVu.

Ya... I get blackouts on b3v 82 everytime it's cloudy outside... kinda pisses me off. My signal strength for 82 and 91 is only at 75%, and the quality tends to take a dip when it's cloudy outside. I wish I could boost the signal strength somewhere above 85%.

I think my installer kinda of screwd me on the setup, but I've also heard that since Edmonton is so far north problems with signal strength might occur.

fudge,

What are the signal strengths on transponders 1 and 32 for both Nimiq 91 and 82? Also, I assume you have a 20 inch dish with the dual lnbs at the end... does the arm of the dish seem to point just to the right of some trees?

Nimiq 1
- 12224 = 77%
- 12676 = 74%

Nimiq 2
- 12224 = 75%
- 12676 = 74%

Seems a bit low to me.

12224 is the first transponder for nimiq 1 and nimiq 2.

Umm... there's are a few trees behind the house across the street from mine, and they're pretty tall too. The dish is prolly a few hundred feet away from the trees. When I eyeball it, it doesn't seem like the trees are getting in the way. The dish is positioned on the left side of our roof, and not directly in the front of our house either. It's on the left middle of the house.

Hope that makes some sense.
