Irrigation contractor here.

Interesting business... lots of guys are better at putting stuff in the ground than I am, but they all end up out of business.... first rule of business is that you are a businessman first! Understand your financial situation at all times. If you let stuff slide because you are too busy, you WILL be out of business real fast.

Second rule: Most businesses fail because they are undercapitalized. Keep a reserve fund to keep you going.

For me, I am openning a exotic fruit-juice/smoothie/power drink/bubble tea store in downtown Toronto. If you're in the business district, you might see a new store being erected. That's me! :) (Don't come asking for freebies.. :P )
I will hopefully be opening up in the next couple of days, and I hope it goes well.

Congrats Blunt !!!..

I will certainly drop by and give you my business. Nothing better than to support fellow RFD'ers.. :D

Now.. if you see an exotic red head.. don't go asking if is Cyber6 .. ;)

I am a writer and freelance for a couple different online publishers. LOL if anyone is really interested I'll post the URLs. I also do design work (cards, menus and such but haven't been actively pursuing this lately -- I've been really focused on the writing).

My husband owns his own business as well. He owns a pawnshop but over the past couple years has gone back a bit more into a previous business of custom gold jewelry design. He designs some pretty nice gold rings, chains, etc. and makes them all starting with creating the mold and melting the gold. It is certainly not a business I'd ever be able to do, but I do like the benefits of having a goldsmith in the family :)

Take care all - would love to hear more about the businesses / self-employment of others on here.

I do IT Consulting. I opened my business about a year ago and it's been going pretty good. Right now looking into expanding a list of clients, considered advertising but I don't know too much about that. Having own business is great, I can't even think of having to work regular 9-5 jobs now.

I've started up a Software and Web Development shop. We mainly target smaller businesses that are looking to develop an online presence or require custom software developed to either automate workflows or assist in data management.

Currently business is pretty slow as it's difficult attracting clients since we have a very small portfolio. But we've started offering to develop sites and systems for free for some businesses to hopefully get the ball rolling via word of mouth.

I, too, am an IT Consultant. I've been doing this for 6 months, and have been taking it slow and steady -- learining the ropes of being a sole proprietor without sticking my neck out too much. This is my second business, as I spent the last 5 years playing in a rock band, and have a little knowledge of how it all works (and the knowledge that I don't enjoy having partners). I'm looking forward to lots of studying and taking certification tests over the summer, and may take on 1 or 2 more clients if all is going well in the fall.

I'm in the process of developing a new website, hopefully it's as successful.

Do you have an accounting designation such as CGA/CMA/CA? Is it necessary to have one? I was considering doing this on the side as well, but figured I couldn't since all I have is a BComm.

I've completed about half of the CGA program, but decided it wasn't worth the cost or time required to finish it, for what I want to do. I am a Certified Bookkeeper, though, and have worked as a full-cycle staff accountant in various capacities for about 8 years. For small businesses, I'm a good fit, as I am not as expensive as a full accoutant would be for them, yet I can do much of what they would do. With some clients, I do the books to a certain point, then hand it off to a designated accountant to finish year end, with others, I do it all for them from start to finish.

If you're looking to get into this, you may want to consider the Certified Bookkeeper program with the Canadian Institute of Bookkeeping, with a BComm, you will likely already have some of the required courses completed. I wouldn't recommend going out on your own yet, though, unless you have a fair bit of experience with a wide variety of businesses in term of accounting. Get exposed to lots of different things first, you'll need that knowledge if you are going to be the one responsible for a companies books.

I am almost done development on my electronics design bussiness. I am hoping to sell a few of my electronic designs on the internet. Hopefully in the next month once my prototyping is all done and tested I can begin to sell them. I am concentrating my development on aftermarket automotive electronics, stuff that controls fueling and ignition for force inducted cars, but I also have some work on encryption that I want to sell.
The website is www.14point7.com, the site is down now as I am looking for a new host, but it will be up shortly. Most of my work is centered around C development for the AVR microcontrollers, with some analog circuitry and PC C# development thrown in.

Also hopefully in the not so distant future once I get my electronics stuff off the ground I am hoping to get back into the power industry, and offer consulting services for forecasting electricity prices.

It is tough getting your own stuff off the ground, you gotta do it all by yourself and pat yourself on the back all day long, I find that I do work in spurts, somedays I will just chill until 5 pm and then work until 11-12.
right now I have to wait till next week for my prototypes to get shipped back to me, so i am just playing computer games all day. I need to finish up some work on C#, but I hate object oriented programming with such a passion.

I honestly wish I could do the 9-5, unfortunately i have some medical stuff that does not allow me to do the 9-5.

Throughout this process of trying to start my own business I realized that the lowest common denomintor to a successful business it to make all parties involved in a transaction happy. If I can sell my product for a reasonable profit then I am happy, if the buyer gets good value for the money then he is happy and both of you can continue on your merry way.

communications... including PR, advertising (purchasing and creating) Public Speaking training & sales training. I've also consulted for a few radio stations. I've been in the broadcast business for SEVERAL years now and have been on my own for about 8 years. It has its ups and downs however I'm able to charge top dollar when business comes my way. When it comes to creating audio/video ads its amazing what you can do with the right pc, software, mic and mixer. When I first started, in the business, I could only dream of producing broadcast quality messages from home. Now I'm doing just that with items airing throughout North America (tv, radio and theatres).
Like most small business owners, tax time can be a bit of a drag unless you're in the habit of putting money aside on a regular basis.

Never heard of you guys but a fantastic website! Well done.

Thanks. The online dating market is quite competitive. Especially with more and more people being comfortable about meeting people on the internet which is leading to a proliferation of dating sites and social networking sites.

Take a look at the popularity of those social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook. These websites are also used for dating as well but they offer the user a "community" to discuss whatever they want. From a strategic and financial point of view, there are advantages and disadvantages of building a "community" which I don't want to get into because it is too long. But in the end, it comes down to cost versus profit. Building a community costs more money than focusing solely on dating.

itTakes2.com is solely focused on dating and we compete head to head with the market leaders such as Match.com and Lavalife.com. We try to offer value added services to our users such as psychic readings which is popular with women, online poker with chat for male users, etc.

If anyone here on RFD has used other online dating services, which ones did you use? Were you successful in getting in touch with women either by email, phone, in person, etc.?

Dave

The sites have a striking resemblence. Agree?

Now, original poster stated that they used the same template. Ok, so I asked for the template. If he can come up with it, then I guess I was wrong.

If not (which I suspect), do you think that a multi million dollar corporation with its own dedicated team of artists would just happen to come across 1234pens.com and just happen to decide.. oh, let's rip this site off design as the new look for one of the biggest sites in Canada.

Edit: Let me predict the responses
- 1234pens.com is a small company - just let him be! Who cares if he's ripping off futureshop
- You're wrong! Futureshop ripped him off!
- Get a life n00b
- It's just a design, it's not a big deal

DaFonz,

My point is, everyone here can be a judge for themselves. Sure, it looks like he ripped FS off. But who cares? Point is, you dont know for a fact, so you dont have the right to point a finger.

Let FS discover and deal with it, I am sure they have lawyers and will make a issue if necessary. The purpose of this thread was to share business ventures.. not pick on one guy who is trying to make a buck.

So, lets add a 4th option to your list: Who cares, lets drop the topic. :)

Wedding / Event / Portrait photography. Was a hobby and thought why not start up a side business with it. Been shooting for 15 years, but only in business for two. However, everyone's got a digital camera now and the wedding photography business is very competitive. Might diversify and try more commercial shoots or get hooked up with the board of education for some contract work.

Everyone thinks they're a wedding photographer until you compare the photos from a guy with a digital camera and a professional. Not saying I'm up there with the guys that have been in the business for 15-20 years, but I give my clients quality that can't be achieved with an entry level SLR and a flash on top. I've talked to a lot of people in the business for years before the digital camera came out and business is rough for them.

I havent personally, but I have quite a few friends who have.

My best friend used Lavalife for a few months, went on 3 dates with 3 women and found his current (1yr+) girlfriend, soon to be fiance.

My girlfriend used Lavalife for a while before she met me. Went on over 15 dates with guys she met, and every single one of them lied. About age/weight/employment/relationship status etc......

That is an experience I have heard from a lot of girls. Guys lie on Lavalife.

Too bad there isnt someway of verifying people so they cant lie on the site. Send someone out to take an actual picture, see their birth certificate and their house (to make sure they are not married) and see a paycheck :)

Very cool! I signed with my dd and it was great. At 8 - 9 months she was signing for milk, could tell us when she was 'done' shopping with us at stores, and even for diaper changes. This really cut back on crying and decreased frustration for her. I LOVED it!!! The only thing was she ended up being an early talker so we cut back on teaching her new signs. I can't wait to try signing again with our next baby. (baby on the way) :)

Did you meet your g/f on Lavalife too ? Most of my friends went on Lavalife to look for one night stands, no strings attached kinda thing

As I said at the beginning of the post (which you quoted)
I haven't personally. Never needed to.

But I know lots of people who dont have time, or the social network to find someone. That being said, I only know guys who have found someone meaningful on Lavalife. All the women I know, have only found liars.

Thanks for sharing - research shows that babies who sign speak sooner and have larger vocab & higher IQ's. So far so good I guess! And at least if you want to keep up ASL she has a real second language already. Since you are also in the baby biz, if you want to send me brochures, I can pass them on to clients. (Info is on my site www.tinytalkers.ca) Also felt guilty entire time for using disposable diapers so may even check you out myself for our next one!

I am a partner in a Fine Art printing business called Crescent Hill Editions. We are a part of the Art Gallery (http://www.crescenthill.com/) Crescent Hill located in Mississauga. We print Giclee's (http://www.novaspace.com/AUTO/Giclee.html) on canvas from original art work provided by our Canadian artists. We also are starting to sell a line that will allow customers to give us their own pictures and we can print them in large format on canvas and have them stretched.

I have seen your site before, but that might be because I’m in a related industry.

What industry are you in?

I just wanted to make a quick comment about your website. You should use the title tags to place a description of your business in there. If you notice when you surf to the site it comes up as "Untitled Document" if you change this Untitled Document it will display the name of the company or whatever you place in there. This will give your site a more finished look.

I do have the title tag used on all the pages, but I just figured out last night the reason it's not showing up is because I'm using that title on the "in-frames" pages and I guess it's pulling the title from one of the static pages.

I'll fix that later today, but thanks for the input!
