my less than one month old seagate 300gb sata2 ncq drive has just started beeping today :\ and now it wont show when it boots up :\ how does an RMA work? do i pay for shipping both ways?
actually i have no idea wats wrong.i've read that it could be mobo issues or power supply issues? any help would be appreciated....the other hd (same kind of drive) works exactly the same i;ve tried switching the cables etc and nothing works

Err, Hard Drives don't beep (or at least none that I'm aware of) Don't jumpt the gun on this one.
Pull out the motherboard manual and find the section on beep codes, then match that up with what you're hearing. Have you moved/bumped your case at all between when there was no beeping and when the beeping started?

I don't mean to question you, but if you pull the power off the drive and fire up the computer I assume there is no beeping?

It still maybe faster to send it to seagate than to do an RMA from your local store.
Have you tried the seagate diagnostic tools? This may shed some lights as to what is wrong with it.

seagate tool is a selfbooting dos based tool for you to do various hard disk tests.
Give it a go and see what happens, I am not sure, but some manufacturer requires you to run this before they will issue and RMA #.

There might be a problem with the harddrive but it definitely is not the one beeping. There is no physical ( mini ) speaker on the drive like those from the motherboard for the sound to be produced. Disconneting the power on the drive only proves there is problem with the drive rather than the drive stopped beeping. May I suggest updating the mobo's bios before proceeding with the RMA?
Anyway, I'm not familiar with seagate's method concerning rma but if they have the same policy as maxtor, you could request the replacement drive in advance then you could just use the packaging to send your drive in. If my memory serves me correctly, maxtor even paid for the s/h for the return of the drive.

sounds really strange, post your system specs, including the Power Supply and the case.
Maybe it's inteferring with the speaker from your case and hence causing the problems.
Also, in bios, some of them require you to turn the SATA device on manually. Check it to see if that is the case. (It won't detect the HD if you don't have it turned on)

Hard drives don't beep, but they can make a mechanical noise which sounds exactly like a beep.
Other people have reported dead Seagates doing this. I recall many years ago with the first generation of Quantum Bigfoot drives... you know... the 5¼" drives that had over a 50% failure rate within the first year. These drives were notorious for failure and would make a very distinct beeping sound when they were dead.
