I was out doing some yardwork this weekend and noticed my bike was stolen from my shed… so I need another one. I’m not looking for a mountain bike… I’d like a road bike this time (curved handlebars…. For racing…)
It is very rare for places like Zellers..Can tire or even Walmart to have road bikes in stock…I usually only see them at bike stores and they are super expensive.
Walmart has one for 199.99 – 22”, shimano 21 speed drive train, alloy braking system. The name brand on it appears to be “NEXT”
Here is the link: http://walmart.crosscap.ca/wps-portal/storelocator/InlineLargePreview.jsp?imageId=6270&lang=
If anyone has any experience with this name brand or the quality of bikes in general at Walmart I’d appreciate your input.
thanks

Wouldnt expect for it to be too good. There's a reason normal road bikes cost at least 1000, and that's because of the quality of the parts. (Rust, wear, heavy)
If you plan on riding once a month this might do, but if you bike normally I'd spend it on a half decent bike. You should note that racing position can be uncomfortable as-well so go into a bike store ask to take one for a test drive. Just leave your credit card or something like that, and also would allow you to compare other higher end bikes to this wally bike.

I agree. If you plan on using the bike more than once a month, or use it for rides longer than a half hour, then dont get it. The positioning on road bikes is extremely important. You can hurt yourself badly if its not fitted properly, and its not just the height of the seat post. theres a zillion other little things that make the difference. If you dont want to spend a tonne of money, you can get some used bikes and/or clearance bikes at sport swap (GTA). the reason new ones start at 800 + tax is because like adrian said, the quality of the components are much better. you wont have as many problems and theyll last longer. also the service at most bike stores is very very good plus most stores give u free tune ups for 2 yrs, some for life.

Just saw a 21 speed road bike today at SportChek for $50 - on clearance, I had to do a double-take to confirm the price, but $50 she was. The regular price was $400.
I didn't note the brand/model, but it looked pretty sharp and is probvably a little bit of a step up from the walmart variety.
It seemed out-of-place, I don't think there were any other road bikes there.

I got a bike from Sportcheck about 3 yrs ago. it was a 21 speed roadbike, called troiseme etage i think. it lasted me just under 1000 KM/ 1 yr before the wheel got so bent, truing was no longer an option and i would need to buy a new wheel. i decided to just go a get a decent quality bike for 800. mine was on sale for 200 marked down from 400. probably the same bike. like i said b4, depends on the usage of it. i prob used a lot more than it was designed for, so i was happy.
