I thought I would pass this along to new or existing Rogers customers.
Last month I talked to customer relations at Rogers and told them that Bell offered me a HD PVR for 2 years at no charge, they put me on hold and when they came back they said they would match it. I had the new box installed the next morning. The next day I told my brother about it, who is an existing Rogers customer, and he asked me if i could do it for him as well. Picked up the phone and in under a minute, he got the HD PVR as well.
Cheers

Do you need to change or upgrade your current cable package to get a HD PVR for 2 years? We currently have Basic cable.
Did you have to have schedule an appointment for a Rogers Cable technician to come over and actually do some wiring/installation work or anything or did you just get the box delivered and hooked it up yourself? What if you have more than one tv?

My brother ho was an existing customer didn't have to change anything. His cable quality improved quite a bit since his old Rogers box was really old.
As far as scheduling anything, they come over and take the pvr out of the box and show you how to hook it up. If you want they will do it for you, however, it takes about 2 minutes to do. If you have more than 1 TV like I do, i just use the basic cable out of the wall for our bedroom and the HD PVR in our family room.
Hope this helps.

You need Digital Cable package minimum. Some HD channels are included, but for others there's an additional $5/month charge.
New installations always require a tech to come out.

You have to speak to customer relations. I find the 1st person you get on the phone at rogers can't offer anything, so I always ask for relations.
I am not aware of any Bell deal, but they obviously don't know what Bell is offering to customers, so i tried it. The thing is, they gave it to me so easily. I found it hard to believe they would give away a $600 box for free over a quick conersation, but thats what they did, twice.

Well, I have an ongoing "dispute" with them over the 10 Speciality Channel administration error fiasco. I threatened to call Bell so this is a good follow up. I know Bell is offering 1 year but maybe they would offer 2 year if you are an existing Rogers HD customer. I am sick of getting shafted by being loyal to one company, so this is my chance to finally get something.

I read on their website, they have something called VIP digital cable. I was curious what you have to do to get it since it said something about no digital rental fees, added benefits and discounts. Can someone please let me know what this is all about and what kind of discounts is included? Thanx, been wanting to switch to digital for a while.......cable fees are sure getting high and there seems to be less quality shows on tv.

keep in mind that rogers wont match deals from competitors for everyone. it depends on ur history with rogers, if you are a good customer and they think ur worth keeping then they will match it.
if you have been calling in, asking for continuous discounts, have late payments, etc, retentions might rather let u go elsewhere

FYI to all;
1) Bell is not offering this as a promotion currently as stated by nepean19. There was an old promotion for 1 year HD PVR rental but the current offering is as follows: http://www.bell.ca/shopping/61065.details?tab=OVERVIEW
2) I call Rogers customer relations and they won't bite on the 2 year HD PVR as they did with nepean19. I am shocked they gave it to him (good job nepean19 I would call you very lucky!). For your info, I have been with Rogers for over 6 years and have HD/Highspeed/2 cell phones with them so I am a customer they would be interested in keeping.

Yes, this must be some kind of delicate art form. :-) I have played angry, reasonable, somewhat reasonable, less reasonable, etc and its only worked once with Rogers and that was for cell phone retention plans.

I spoke with someone in the sales department for cable services today. I told the rep about Bell Canada offering me a 2yr no contract HD PVR. The rep said he could not match it. He also informed me that I am on a 'better choice' bundle contract until next May'07 and if i wanted to break this contact it is $100 per service for the first year and $50 per service for a second year.
Im guessing because I am contracted, he did not care to offer me anything except to tell me it is an extra $25/month from a regualr digital cable service to an HD PVR rental service...
I guess OP got lucky.

I just go off the phone with Rogers Customer Rel'ns dept. I also told them about Bell having a 2yr HD PVR free rental promotion and that I wanted to cancel my cable. The rep immediately said "we have the same promotion here too". I told her I wanted to talk to my husband first, and call her back.
She said I could talk to any customer relations rep and can get the same offer.
The second customer relations rep didn't know about the offer, but luckily the first rep had written a note in my file...
So I got 2yr HD PVR free rental (will pick up at local store and hook up myself)
1 free pay per view movie (need to use within 2 months)
1 month free specialty channel package (got the sports package)
I've been with Rogers for almost 20 years.
Currently have Cable/internet/wireless.

Oh, just to add to my last post...
I currently have basic cable+ultimate tv pak.
I did not have to upgrade or pay any additional fees.
The rep said that the 2yr promotion is also good for the regular PVR.
Thanks nepean 19 !!

I have Rogers VIP Digital Bundle (with 4 extra outlets)
I have Rogers Extreme Service (and I regulary do 300+ GB per month)
I own 2 Digital Cable boxes and a Cable Modem
I "rent" 1 Digital box which is free (for now, I think for a year)
I had previously (around Jan I think) negotiated a whole bunch of discounts 15% off bundle... well let me just show you folks what my bill looks like:
Rogers Yahoo! Hi-Speed Extreme 46.95
Less: Internet: 12 month $10 rebate -10.00

You saved 37.31 on your rogers services
I spoke with a Customer Relations rep today and he looked at my account and said that to get approx the same services with Bell that I have with Rogers would be over $100. Unfortunately I think he is right. He called my bluff.... and well... not HD PVR for me >:(

Guys... this deal has been around in one form or another since 2004. The original "Real Choice" deal was for a free rental of a PVR or HDPVR for as long as you remain a Rogers customer. Then it turned into the current "Ditch the Dish" deal for a 2 year free rental. For both deals you had to trade in a satellite receiver, but the tech who comes to do the install rarely remembers to pick it up.
Now it sounds like now Rogers is waiving the requirement of having the satellite receiver altogether.
Here's an old thread about the deal:
http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=107123
And the current "Ditch the Dish" deal:
http://www.shoprogers.com/store/cable/ptv/satellite_offer_main.asp
It's definitely a good deal to get a HDPVR... I've had it for almost 2 years now and I can't live without it!

I sort of got the deal but only for 1 year. Which is better than nothing I guess. I had to speak to 2 people. First guy didn't budge, second guy offered me 1 year.
The first guy I spoke to wouldn't give me the offer. While talking we were both on computers and he showed me that Bell is offering a credit but requires $68 of programming for only 1 year. He explained that since my account has extra savings from VIP and bundles it would still be cheaper to stay with rogers and therefore he offered no deal.
Second guy I called told me that he had 2 other callers today ask him about the same deal. (RFD effect I assume). He said that he couldn't make the offer to those other people because he was concerned that bell had some restrictions sich as a required minimum programming for a high amount or binding contracts, etc. But I replied by telling him that even if I stayed with rogers and paid for high amount of rogers programming I would still be $25 disadvantage because I would have to pay the rogers fee. We sort of went back and forth saying the same thing over and over. But eventually he just said "what can I do to keep you as a rogers customer?" I said just give me free HDPVR for 2 years and I would be an extrememly happy customer. He came back and said that he would give me the deal for only 1 year because the bell website deals are only for 1 year. I decided to agree with it.

I called again, they offered me 1 month free rental credit of $25 because I said that I just wanted to try it out and see if I liked it or not without wasting any of my money. I turned it down saying I will call bell and then decide.
I called back and said I wanted to cancel, they offered my the 2 yrs free rental, no contract requirement of HD PVR, I believe the idea is that you have to actually get to the cancellation department and say you want to cancel with an attitude of "Ive made up my mind and switching to Bell, but in a nice manner" and dependant on the retention rep as well.
Good luck to everyone else.

Before I got this deal I had Analog VIP and Extreme Internet.
I had recieved a letter in October indicating something to the effect that if I upgraded to Digital I would get a 15% bundle discount (and maybe some other discount, can't remember now, but it was not all the discounts I have now).
I was on vacation and did not get back in time to take advantage of the offer (which I think expired at the end of october). Anyway, I called them up in Nov or Dec to negotiate a few things.
1. PM the 3Web High speed internet
2. get the 15% bundle discount
3. upgrade to Digital
When I spoke to them to try and get the 15% discount they said the offer had expired. I said giving customers only 2 weeks from the time they recived the offer was not reasonable and if this is how they were going to treat a long term customer.... yada yada yada. I also added a sob story about losing my job and that I could not really afford cable and internet any more (and might just switch to 3 web for internet only!!!) After a fair bit of "crying", being "pissed" that they were not going to give me the 15% bundle and talking about leaving they put together the package I have now. A number of the discounts are only in place for one year like that -6.99 and the -10.00 for internet. EDIT:No fee to take part in VIP (it's a package)
I think the more services you have with them the more they will discount to keep you as a customer. I am thinking I should get a cell phone with them... so when I call to cancel, they will see a potential loss of 3 servics!!! I think the problem is now, they look at the discounts I am getting and think I allready have a very good deal (which is what the last rep I talked to said).
After reading some of the sucesses I think I need call and cancel. If they call my bluff can I call back a day later to say I changed my mind ;)
EDIT: If someone has some Express VU pricing (fictisous or real offers) please post it, I need to have a good fake offer if I call back :D

Well you are both kind of right and wrong I believe.
If you are allready on "Digital Cable" (for example have a SD or HD Digital box) then YES there are a number of HD chanels you get Free.
If you currently don't have Digital cable then I belive you "may" have to pay some BS digital access fees or what have you (see my previous post for a breakdown of Invoice) unless you "negotiate" to get upgraded to digital for no or little cost. If you do this (get upgraded for free) and allready have at least Basic Cable + Combo (or Basic cable + some higer package like ultimate etc) then you get the HD Channels for FREE.
If you only have Basic Cable (regardless of if you have Digital Service) the HD Channels will cost you extra.
There are about 10-16 "Free" HD Channels (I think it depends on your area)
From Rogers site "or an additional $5.95/month, and you'll receive HD TSN, HD Discovery, HD ABC Seattle, HD CBS Seattle, HD NBC Seattle, HD Fox Seattle, and HD PBS Seattle "

I am scheduled to switch to Rogers in the second week of May. I got a call from the Bell retensions department the day after I cancelled and she said that because I had been with Expressvu for 11 years (had a BUD before that) that she could offer me a one time $60 discount to stick around. Needless to say, I told her where to stick her offer.....
When I cancelled Expressvu about a year ago (was a customer for 4 years) for Rogers, Expressvu customer retentions department offered me a free PVR (can't remember if it was an HD or not, about $600 retail value) - it wasn't free for 2 year rental, it was free - no strings attached. I had the free for life rental program from Rogers, so I declined. FYI.

Got the PVR! Thanks OP! However, I did get a call from Bell the other night. They wanted me to switch from Rogers but were not offering much.
I do not think this is unethical. What is unethical is Rogers saying "You can only use equipment we brand (put a sticker on) with huge mark-ups". The equipment is the same for all cable companies and they just send the equipment script files (example: Scientific-Atlanta Recievers and Cable Modems) to handle their service and/or at what rate. But thats just what I think.

I spoke to customer relations on Sunday. She had to talked to her boss, but I finally got it.
The thing is that I have already had the HD box, so they asked me to bring it back to Roger's store and get a new PVR for free (2 years).
It was quite easy to get it, as I am a VIP client so I guess they didn't want to let me go to Bell.
It is Ok to bargin with Rogers, don't feel that I was doing anything wrong (except telling them that my friend got the HD PVR for free from them while I was talking actully about RFD's members, but I consider you as my friends, eh?!) :cheesygri

Patience is a good thing and its paid off for me.
I got my HD-PVR today via customer relations. The customer relations rep was excellent (much better than any I dealt with in the past). He reviewed my file and not only gave me the HD PVR for 24 months as I requested, but $10 off my high speed for 12 months! Mind you my high speed was never discounted before so perhaps it was a little high as is. I had not priced matched with 3Web or anything of the sort.. I have been paying $43.43 before, now it will be $33.43 for 12 months. Very satisified customer.

rvs007
May 1st, 2006, 01:02 PM
A HDPVR is required to view the HD channels, but still can be used with SD televisions. Advantages of getting the HDPVR off the bat is that you don't need to worry about upgrading if you get a HDTV in the future, and the HDPVR comes with a 160GB hard drive as oppose to the 80GB in the SD version. This will give you roughly double the recording time for SD programming.
Also, you don't need a separate digital terminal... the PVR is a digital terminal (actually, it has 2 tuners to allow you to record two programs at the same time).

I feel for you as I was quite frustrated on Saturday when I didn't get any action. I believe it is entirely dependant on the CSR you get. FYI - this deal has been around for at least a year. RFD has had threads about Rogers and PVRs before, but not the deal.
*Everyone* I know who has wanted one prior to this thread has got one, even if they were currently on Rogers. The only thing I can think of is that Rogers just got nailed with the RFD effect. It's one of the reasons that I didn't make a thread about this topic, and suggest this offer as an alternative to individuals who were interested in buying a Rogers PVR outright.
It wouldn't shock me to see Rogers pull the "free" PVR deal off the table, or at least tighten up the rules.
Good luck everybody.

Customer Service lady was very nice but said that the Bell promo was based on a 2 year rental agreement and if you drop the service, you get dinged. I tried to suggest that if I had a free PVR it wasn't very likely that I'd cancel the service!

Sal Cangeloso took a small form-factor Mini-ITX case and even though it had just a one-gigahertz processor with 512MB of RAM on its motherboard, was able to turn in into a PVR by upgrading it with a 250GB hard drive, beefing up the power supply to 120 Watts and installing the Ubuntu 5.10 distribution of Linux. The key to the system is the Hauppauge WinTV-PVR 350 using MythTV PVR software. Cangeloso was able to plug his digital cable right into it, and it even has a remote.
He set it up with super quiet fans and says the thing runs very well. Downloading scheduling information from the Web, he ends up with a tiny, quiet, cheap PVR that he built himself. Neat."

The best she could do is about $17/month for it, I believe, she said there was no way she could do 2 yrs. free. I said that wasn't of use to me and I'd call back to cancel my service after signing up with Bell (last-ditch effort on my part)... didn't work, though. :(

I decided to try again for the deal, with the mindset that even if I did not get *this* deal I'd at least try and get any offer out of Rogers. My first attempt yesterday was stonewalled (but politely :>). Today I spent about 40 mins. talking to Retension again and they wouldn't do the deal. The best they offered is a discounted bill overall and a 1 yr. term on a HD PVR for half price per month (approx. $12). The CSR I spoke with was very, very polite and not at all unreasonable. However, she said the only 2 yr. deal they could make involved returning a satellite dish/box, which I don't have or want to look into. To be honest, I'd probably move to the HD PVR eventually anyway, so I just took the 1 yr. deal plus the overall bill discount. I think it increases my overall cable bill by about $9, no big whoop. Of course I wish I'd gotten the HD PVR for 2 yrs. for free, but I just couldn't imagine calling again (and losing valuable time for a deal I may never get). I'm satisfied, who knows, maybe I can improve upon this deal sometime down the line, you never know. :)
Thanks to the O.P. and everyone keeping this thread going, it's very good.

imo, chance of getting a pvr:
100% - current satellite, non-rogers customer
99.9%- non-current satellite, non-rogers customer
90% - rogers customer for more than 10 years
50% - rogers customer for more than 5 years
20% - rogers customer for more than 2 years, depnding on your negotiating skills and the operator you get

"Say you, say me"(?) is on the muzak...
... isn't that Lionel Ritchie? I'm only guessing cuz this is an instrumental version....
... so he's Nicole Ritchie's father eh?
hmmm... interesting.
Just spoke to the manager and now she's off to verify something or speak with someone. No muzak this time... I think they're starting to sweat!
Wuh? She just came back and offered me just a straight $150 credit since she says she doesn't have the capability to do the PVR deal! That's definitely not the same as 2 years PVR rental, and it wrecks the poll if they're willing to just start coming up with random sums of cash.
It does seem to indicate that these guys are desperate if you sound serious enough about leaving.
I really am contemplating the switch the more I think about it. I think I'll give Bell a call.

at least if you can't do us all.. can you change my note on my account to read 2 years hd pvr instead of the discounted 1 year std pvr... LOL.... I wish!
It's a campaign code, not a note. And no!

Samson45,
How did your dispute about the 10 channel admin error turn out? I got
a call from them yesterday. They offered me a couple more months of grace
and will tag on the $14.95 in July. They also offered me a regular cable box
which I think I should have gotten anyway since last August.
I have Cable/Internet and have been a customer >20 years.
I will go over to a Bell center to check them out.
Thanks

I got into a fight with them about the same channel lineup they offered me $10 off for a year on my Internet Whick i took!
I got the same thing, plus a discount on something else too to make it $14.95. Then I upgraded to all channels instead of just $10 channels and then my bill was only $3 more. Basically it cost me $3 to upgrade from 10 channels to like 70 channels for digital.
I got the Digital VIP plus movies pack now, which has all digital channels except for things like playboy, foriegn channels, etc.
I also called them about the bell deal (before I even read this post) becuase I got a flyer in my mailbox about $20 credit for 12-months when signing up to $68 worth of bell services. The lady at Rogers told me she could credit my account $20 for 8 months, then when she confirmed I wanted it she said "so you'll get $20 credit for 12 months, is that okay?"
So really I don't know if I'll get 8 or 12 months but either way I'm okay with it since my Rogers bill is $150 per month anyway for the last 5 years, I'll be happy with $20 less for 8-12 months.

I switched to VIP Ultimate or something like that, so I pay $10 more but I get all of the speciality channels. I decided to try that out for a bit and see if I like it. If not, I'll drop it entirely later. Since I have no Bundle/package I am "protecting" (no more grandfather status) I don't have any issue with dropping or adding pieces of my channel offering.
PM me for further details if you want to know how I got the HD PVR (it was probably 50% the agent I got and 50% the story I had to tell).

no luck for me. I'm a Rogers customer for over 15 years, have 4 cell phones, internet and cable with them. The best she offered was $20.96/month for the PVR or $8.96 for a regular HD terminal (thats including my VIP discounts). All she would say is if you want to cancel it I respect your decision. :(

I was quoted $19/mo for HD PVR and $9.98 for the HD box

:) One of my buddies called yesterday after I told him about the deal. He called and went through the routine. Retention dept. told him they valued his business however, there was no such offer and they could do NOTHING for him and that if he wished to leave & go to Expressvue that it was his perogative.
So I guess the deal is officially DEAD!
Thanks OP.
The PVR works great. Took me a few minutes to figure out that the reason it was not working (when I first connected it) was caused by the fact that the Radio Shack amplified splitter feeding it would not pass the digital signal. Once I bypassed the amp for the line feeding the PVR, it started to work. :)

No luck here either..... I think it also has something to do with your location..... I'm in Mississauga, have been with Rogers for 8 years now, yet she would not budge..... From reading this thread, most of the people that got it seem to be outside GTA.... I even said cancel the service, and she was about to put my cancellation through, but then I caved :( Damnit!

It doesn't matter where you live because there are multiple call centers around Canada that take calls from all serviceable regions. Most likely the customer relations department caught on and an e-memo was distributed. The only "free PVR" offer I've heard about is part of the Winback campaign that's been mentioned in this thread.

My cousin tried just to get a free HD box (3250HD) and he has everything but the foreign channels and also has internet and cell phone. He has been with them since each one started and spends like $500+ a month with Rogers because of his business, and he couldn't even get a 3250HD rental for free.

Okay just finished my deal with Rogers Consolidated Customer Relations....told them that I saw an ad in my condo building for $20 Bell Express VU and the condo is on bulk order. Really nice rogers guy explained that I get a lot of channels.
I currently have The Ultimate TV Pak plus Basic Digital Cable combines all the specialty channels included in the Classic Combo and MeTV packages. Get the most popular specialty channels such as CNN, TBS, A&E, TSN, Family Channel, Life Network, Discovery Channel, Showcase, Comedy Network and many more. and TMN.
I also have a PVR (not HD), that I pay $19.99 a month for. So I told them well Bell is offering free PVR for 2 years, I have been a Rogers Wireless and Cable customer for 10 years what can you do for me?
Without a blink he said I can match that for you and give your your PVR for free for 2 years. So I said okay.
I don't have a HDTV so I didn't want to ask to trade in my current PVR for HD PVR but now relazing the hard drive is double, I may do it.
Thanks to the OP for the informaton, very happy now...

I just called on Friday and got them to give me the HDPVR rental plus the $5.99 specialty HD package for 1 year. I have home phone/internet/wireless/cable with Rogers and just said Bell was offering a free year if I moved my cable to satellite.
They did not hesitate one bit which makes me think I should have asked for the 2 years! :-0
A friend of mine called right after and the rep only offered to pay for half the rental for the year...

Thanks to OP., it got me thinking about doing the same but for my Expressvu:
...Called into Expressvu to hint at my disatisfaction with some prices, and current competitor promos going on., as soon as I finished that sentence., the rep put me on hold., and offered me ($5/month for my Sympatico for the duration of my contract) & $255 in discounts (towards Expressvu free monthly bills) over the next 6 months. Needless to say, that alone bought my loyalty to Bell Sympatico & Expressvu.........
(Okay actually what happened was I called 310-bell., THE FIRST rep did the Sympatico credits., then transfered me to Expressvu who did the $255 credits)...Just in case someone got confused and thought that only one rep can handle ALL accounts....in fact truth be told., I'm pretty sure I didn't even make it to the cancellation department (I asked out right "which department did I reach" for each guy)...so more than likely had I pushed for Cancellations., I would've receive a MUCH MORE OUTRAGEOUS discount. Needless to say., I'm ecstatic. Don't use HD., have the level I PVR., so I REALLY didn't want to waste time with another PVR.
.........well until the 6 months are up anyway .

for those who were asking if Shaw would do the same, i can tell you guys not to bother. Shaw doesnt rent any HD terminal (which is a shame because i have an HDTV but can't justify the price for an HD terminal). Also i've found that Shaw has a "go ahead cancel, you'll come crawling back to us anyway" attitude towards cancelations. I work for Shaw and i've spoken with our "save" dept and they only remind the customer of all the great Shaw services they're getting (local channel, Shaw tv (ugh this channel sucks so bad), Shaw Messenger (who uses that anyway?), Shaw picture share, Shaw Secure (aka almost as bad as Norton), etc etc etc) and that's pretty much it. i've seen maybe one or two account that managed to get 29.99 for SHSI but they were mostly account with already over $120+ of cable services (and they didnt get any discount for their cable...)
My mom was thinking of switching to Bell (which i encouraged) but she wont be able to because she needs 7 outlets.....

Just called Rogers and got the HDPVR for 2 years.
Was transfered to customer service and asked for the deal. The CSR would not budge and could only offer me an additional 5% of my total bill. I asked for customer retention where I spoke to a very friendly CSR. She told me the offer was normally reserved for those who were already with Bell and wanted to switch but she would be willing to make an exception.
Total time spent was 15min.

is there a difference b/w HDPVR and just a normal PVR? I have a regular TV with a digital box, will the HDPVR be OK?
It's for those with HD you can record HD shows.
I'm currently on Rogers High speed, Digital Cable (With hd cable/sports pack) and two cell phones I'm going to give em a call and see if I can score a free DVR. I keep trying to convince my dad to pay the extra 5$ because he goes and records all his shows on VHS and after seeing these HD shows I can't stand watching them in crappy vhs quality. Wish me luck

Also keep in mind that the HDPVR has double the disk space capacity as the SD version (160GB vs. 80GB), so even if you only have a regular TV, you can record twice the amount of shows with the HDPVR. And yes, you can hook up a HDPVR to a regular TV.

Arghh - very pleasant well-trained CSR but claimed that they were not aware of any promo, could not match and did not seem too concerned that I would leave Rogers.
Guess I will check out Bell and migrate the internet, satellite and wireless over!
For those that actually got the deal, can you please outline the approach? Who did you ask for? What did you say? What was offered? Did you already have HD?
TIA
Yea As well, I called 1-888-rogers1 and then I said "Cable TV"
then He asked for
Billing
Account changes
Sales
Tech support
Which one of these did you guys ask for?
EDIT:
I just got it - took about 5 minutes on the phone. Regular CSR said he couldn't do anything - so I asked to be transferred to the "Retention Dept".
I spoke with a very pleasant lady - I told her I had a pair of cable cutters sitting on the table on top of a Bell Expressvue ad. :D
She put me on hold for 5 minutes and came back to the phone and said "no problem I can match that".
Thanks OP et. al.
HAHAHA I called and immidiately asked for retention the lady is like , "Oh, can I ask why? I'm like "...uhh no real reason" and she transfers me.
With retention I say I'm on HD cable, HS internet and 2 cell phones and if it's possible to get the free 2 year deal, that Bell seems to be offering.
She gave me 8% off cable, 10% of internet for 12 months :| Bill goes from 127 -> 109$ for the 3 month periods. Going to try again and say 1 year.
I told her about the deal and shes says "is it a one year promotion?". I'm like "uggghhh two years..." and shes like "ohhh, let me check" and came back with those discounts. sorta caught me off guard I'm going to try again later if not my dad will be happy that I saved him some cash as opposed to switching his internet.
(I tried to bluff with Bell internet a while back and ended up actually cancelling, they didn't give a $hi* and were ripping me off overcharging the Highspeed and only delivering HS lite, claiming it was a bad area problem.)

I have a Rogers bundle and it took some talking but I was able to manage a $12 discount on my HDPVR rental for 1 year.
I already called a few weeks ago and got them to match the 3Web internet deal. They didn't match that either but gave me a $10 discount.
They used the 15% bundle discount as a major reason not to match the Bell PVR deal.
I spend about $160 per month with them on my Internet/Cable/LD services.
Every little bit helps i guess.

Just got off the phone with the customer retention rep, and I told him about the 3web internet deal, the Bell 2-yr free HDTV cable box rental, as well as asked him if there are any good cell phone packages.
He offered me a $10 discount on my internet bill for 12 months, as well as 12 months free regular cable box rental (for HDTV cable box, he was only able to offer 4 month free which would not make sense for me becoz I don't have a HDTV yet).
As for cell phone plans, he was able to offer 250 minutes, free call display and unltd evening/wkends (starting from 8pm) on 3-yr contract for $20. He also offered Nokia 6103 or Moto V551 for free, or Moto ROKR for $19 (I didn't ask about RAZR becoz I haven't heard good things about it besides looking pretty). He also waived the $35 admin charge.
I pretty much took the discounts and stayed with Rogers since I didn't really wanted the hassle of switching in the first place :)

I think it helped that I was not screaming my head off at why Rogers is charging an arm and a leg for everything. I made it more into a conversation and reminded myself to be polite at all times. I guess it also helped that this is the first time I have spoken to a retention rep, and that they make quite a lot of $ from me on a monthly basis (about $180).

Ok guys here's my situation.
1) I have HiSpeed Extreme Rogers
2) I have been getting free full cable for 2 years now. They never came back to take it off!
I have a tv in the basement with full cable. If I try this deal for a HD PVR, what will that mean, I want it for my HD TV upstairs, at the same time I still want the free cable downstairs ? How does it work - do they run a seperate line for HD TV ?? Unfortunately, I need to get them to put in a cable outlet upstairs.

3web's internet cable price is almost twice as inexpensive as Roger's Extreme internet. Threaten to leave Rogers. They will lower their price in order to keep you and if they don't, you'd save even more with 3web anyways.
Also, if you have a digital cable box, you can still watch regular basic cable anywhere else in the house. It's not free as in you're still technically paying for it. That's another reason to keep Rogers over Bell.

i called in and told the CSR that Bell called me and offered me free HDPVR for 2 years.
he tried his best to talk me out of it..giving me all the reasons bell sucks and rogers rules! "you have to sign a 2 year contract with bell...their service is inferior to ours...PVR prices will come down in the next few months" yada yada yada
he was very nice, though...and, i didn't get upset or loud or anything.
then he transfered me to the other dept - and, i gave her the same schpeal (sic?)....
she said there was no way she could match free HDPVR for 2 years..and, asked me if there were any conditions and where i heard about the offer.
i said (lied) : they called and gave me the offer and that the only condition was i also buy at least $47 worth of programming.
she repeated that she couldn't match that because it was HD. i told her that i wasn't really interested in HD (because i don't have a HD TV)..it was really the PVR i wanted.
she put me on hold for about a minute then came back and gave me free PVR for 2 years...and, the best part is that SOMEHOW (not sure what kind of voodoo she worked here) but, my monthly bill went from $56/month to $47/month!
i'm going to pick up my console today.

Full cable costs what, $40-50/month? Is it really worth risking to lose that to gain a free HD PVR for two years?

It just means when you get the HD PVR installed, you'll start paying for the full cable you've been getting all along (the technician comes to your house to drop off the PVR, and most likely he will check the box and remove the filters that are not there anyway).
What you might want to try to do is get the deal but ask them if you can pick the PVR up at a local Rogers store. Then there might be a slim chance they will not change anything in your account other than add the PVR and a credit for 2 years.

After trying once and failing to get the 2yr free PVR, (though getting ~10% off monthly cable bill - a distant second best), I tried again with the opener, ' I've been thinking about getting a PVR'... they immediately gave me 4 months free (non-HD) PVR rental, no contract, as their 'new promotion'.
I took it, since it was easy, and they were giving me guff when I pressed again for 2 years about running out of promo codes to add to my account (!)... from rogers I only get TV, paying ~$50/mo.
Still, their websites show that Bell's offer is much better than Rogers IF you're ok with a 2yr contract for PVR rental: Bell (promo prices) is basically $0-$5/mo (depending on the price of your channel package) while Rogers (regular price) is $20/mo ($25 for HD) - a huge difference:

I think it should be noted to any potential takers on this offer that Rogers HD picture quality does not compare with Bells. I have watched both on ISF Calibrated 57" Toshiba HDTVs and the difference is huge. Rogers is not nearly as clear and has alot of noise in the picture. Rogers also pixilates more during fast moving scenes. If you want HD, you should not even consider going with Rogers. Same goes for Shaw, it is just as bad.

The computer system only allows for 1 promo code at a time per account. If they add a new promotion code, the old one will get deleted.
You have to speak to the right person (promotions dept and then it's luck of the draw who you get) who is willing to give automatic monthly credits for any other promotion.

Isn't BEV max resolution 720p (which is better at fast moving scenes) though?

Meaning what? 720p or 1080i is the best that cable/satellite can currently output. 720p is what most HDTV's native resolutions are and is better for sports/fast moving images.

I called and got:
- 5 free movies
- 2 months free HD PVR
- 50% off the HD PVR after 2 months
According to the rep, my bill will go from $66 to $61 after the 2 months based on the discounts she applied :) :) :)
During the 2 months, it will be even less (~$50 I think).
Thanks to whoever started this thread!!!!!! :)))))))

Incorrect. You can apply a campaign to each service on an account depending on the campaign stipulations. For example, you can have a campaign for VIP + a discount on theme packs + a discount on Internet/RHP and so on.

uhh what's an hd pvr? ^_^; Is it that box that lets you get ppv (pay-per-view) w/ the remote?
Is it possible to keep the original box and get the hd pvr? We have the box in the family room but I wouldn't mind using it for my room. I'm just using a cable to hook it up and gosh I can really see the pixelly quality... *v*

Maybe where you live. You must have RG59 in your house, or the cable in your neighbourhood is old.
It is a known fact that Bell compresses the crap out of all of their feeds. HD on Bell pixellates constantly.
Rogers HD is uncompressed and crystal clear.
I have had both at the same time on my ISF calibrated LG and Panasonic HDTVs and Bell was noticeably inferior.

I am on shaw basic digital entertainment package and pay about 86 dollars a month (high speed internet included). I have been using their services for over ten years. Does anyone know if this is competitive with the other providers? I live in BC so I cannot get rogers. I called and mentioned the Bell deal to them but they gave me several excuses about how their customer service is better. If I switch to Bell for cable and Telus for internet, is this a better deal?
