When you guys get the 1-yr free PVR and 20% off and stuff, do you have to agree to a contract?
Also, has anyone gotten cable deals when they were already with Rogers for Internet/home phone, and were given a good cable deal to sign up for cable as well? Is it better to try to do this over the phone, at Rogers plus stores, or wait for a promotional flyer? I'm wondering if they send offers automatically if you have some but not all services with them.

no, i have never agreed to a contract. if you're talking a to a CSR in the Billing department or anywhere other than 'Retentions', they only have access to certain promotions (which usually require a contract of some sort).
when i got my all my deals from speaking to someone in Retentions, i had only been a customer for a few months - cable, internet, home phone and mobile.

i noticed that as well. i tried calling a few times before i spoke to someone in 'Retentions'. i would call and instantly say, "cancel services".
the automated voice would say, "I'll get someone to help you with that...". i heard a message about the iPhone 3GS being sold out. this could be a sign you're not being transferred to the 'Retentions' department. i was transferred to 'Billing' every time. and these people could most certainly not offer me anything worth taking.
what seems to work now is firstly saying what service you want to talk about. when the automated voice says, "tell me why you're calling", i said, "internet".
she said, "what kind of help do you need with your internet?"
then i said, "CANCEL SERVICES".
i was transferred to the 'Retentions' department right away. i did not hear the iPhone 3GS message, and my wait time was much shorter.
you can usually tell right off the bat if you're talking to someone from 'Retentions'. they are very quick to make offers, they are fast with their computers, and they have access to tweaking all of your services (most CSR's not in retentions will only have access to one or two of your services, they're usually slower, and they will transfer you to someone else to deal with another part of your bill).
another potential tip: i always ask where the call center is located and most 'Retentions' people are in Moncton and the CSR's are in Toronto. but this could just be circumstantial.
all the best!

Grrr... my 20% off credits just expired, and my total bill just jumped from $180 (inclusive of tax) to $235 for Rogers home phone, Express internet, and cable TV (Digital VIP, PVR, TMN and HDTV specialty pack).
I just called, presumably got billing, and was offered a 10% reduction if I signed a 1-year contract. Apparently that was the most they could offer.

I am due for renewal on the free hdpvr and discounts so thinking of calling during the weekday.

When your discount ends (mine states it is over Aug 22/09) should you wait til that time to phone in to cancel or before that month's next billing cycle starts (mine ends July 26th)

Odd. Rogers called yesterday to offer us a year's free PVR. I wasn't on the call, so I don't know if there's any sort of commitment after the first year. Has anyone else gotten this offer? It sort of came out of the blue. We only subscribe to their basic service right now.

Definitely call before the billing cycle starts, or they'll charge you. I was told by a rep that I could call on the last day of my Internet promo to cancel, but when I did, they said I should have called earlier, and ended up charging me a month of Extreme.

I also got a similar call. They offered me three digital terminals - free for three months. They were only SD terminals though (not even PVR) so I wasn't interested. I also only subscribe to their basic service right now.

[QUOTE]{man, rogers retentions is impossible to talk to these days...they seem to really be tightening their belts}
I called 3 times and they wouldn't budge on my contract deals kept telling there was nothing. So I just called bell and told them that my contract was up with rogers and what can they do for me. I am going to bell got a good deal with only 1 yr contract. But still angry about rogers not even try to keep me as a costumer.

When you called 3 times did you actually get forwarded to Retentions or was it the 1st rep you spoke to?

Considering Bell here... this is what they offered me:
Home phone under $20 per month (no services though)
Internet 2GB/month $20 per month - this includes free wireless home networking
Bell TV (includes an HD received for a year) - $25 per month
But i need to sign a two year contract... which sucks...
Thoughts?

I called Rogers last night. We have had all our services with them for 3 years and my wife has used them for cell for 7 years. We have had no discounts other than the bundle discount and our monthly bill is about $250.
We have 2 HDTV's but until now have only had SD cable. It took some time but I eventually got to retentions. I talked to a guy named Will, and he was a bit of a dick and said the best he could offer me was 1 HD PVR for a year, and $5/month off our home phone. I asked if there was anything else he could do and he said he could only do 1 promotion per service. I knew it to be a lie and he had lied about some other things during our conversation so I let him go and decided to try Bell.
I called Bell and talked to a nice guy named Jonathan. He offered me a very similar deal to Rogers, but with more channels. The catch is that the deals only last for 1 year and the contract is for 2 years. He tried to sell me on internet as well but I've been with Bell for internet before and they throttle their traffic way too much. I hung up, talked it over with my wife and we decided to give Rogers one more shot before cancelling our cable.
We called Rogers again and went immediately to retentions. The retentions person asked if she could make us an offer and I told her we wanted to cancel all services and she began to process the order. My wife eventually chimed in and asked exactly what offer she was referring to. This girl bent over backwards to make us happy. This is what we ended up with:
-2 free HD PVR's for a year
-20% bundle discount on all services up from 15%
-VIP cable (which we already had)
-The Movie Network
-HD Specialty Pack
All this for about $64/month. WAY better then what we had. The girl was so nice that we decided to press for more.
She also gave us $10/month off our home phone, and we also changed my wife's cell phone plan to a plan I saw here at RFD, which includes:
-250mins daytime
-Evenings and week-ends from 6p.m.
-Caller ID, voicemail (we got her to throw in call waiting as well)
-100mins Canadian long distance/month
All this for $20 + system access fee + taxes.
Then I told here we wanted an internet jack in our home theatre because my receiver and Blu-Ray player are both network capable, and she scheduled a technician to come this Saturday and install the new jack for free.
Our new monthly total is $192, and we have 2 HD PVR's instead of 1 SD, more channels, a better cell phone plan and we're getting another internet connection installed for free. They also offered my wife a free phone upgrade but she wanted to look at them in person before deciding.
Realistically, I don't think I could be much happier with the increase in services and savings that we got. Thanks RFD!

Hey Guys,
My contract is currently expiring (20% discount, free hd-pvr for a year, specialty channels, etc), and I called rogers twice to renew my discounts to no avail.
Through those phone calls, the reps gave me a lot of BS and I wanted to see if you can help me clear it up:
Question 1: If a discount has been applied to an account can it be reapplied?
excuse from rep: Discount cannot be reapplied because it was already applied to your account.
Question 2: I call in saying "CANCEL CABLE SERVICE", and promptly ask to speak with the retention department. The Rep said I was speaking with relation and she was from that department. Would I be speaking to the right person?
Question 3: For those of you with expiring free HD-PVR boxes, have you called in to renew the discounts?
2 strikes today. I really find it annoying how speaking to certain rogers reps can be like night and day.

Answer 1: Yes. If you search through this thread you'll find that many people have had the HDPVR free for two years and then recently renewed for another two year deal.
Answer 2: Probably not. The regular CSR's like to lead you to believe you're talking to the correct department when you're most likely just talking to the front lines. I've hard a hard time getting through the front line of CSR's lately, but I recently figured out a way that got me to the right people.
When I called, I was asked to say what I was calling about. I said, "Internet". Then the automated voice said, "What kind of help would you like with your internet?" At that point I said, "Cancel services".
I have found that if you say "cancel services" right away, you almost always get sent to the front line CSR's - the people who have very limited access to promotions. Try the above tactic and see if you have better luck. Say what service you're calling about, then say "Cancel services".
Answer 3: I have not reached the end of my discounts (2 Free HDPVR's for two years, etc) but like I wrote earlier, many people have had discounts re-applied.
Does that help? Keep us posted! Good luck!! :)

I need a bit of help and what you guys think. I moved in my new minihome at the end of february and presently I have Cable (HD), internet and home phone all with Rogers. It's a promotion that last 1 year so it's all free. Right now I pay 50% of for the first 6 month for a dual receiver HD-PVR and I pay the 8$ for a HD bundle which include HD TSN and Discovery.
Since all the services are free for 1 year, I don't have any bargaining power right. I couldn't call them and ask them to give me my pvr 50% off again for 6 other months after my first 6 months are done and so on. What do you guys think. I know I'm not paying a lot right now (like 18$ per month) for all the services but still I don't want to pay full price on the HD-PVR if I don't have too. It's just I don't feel I have any bargaining chips with that free promotion.
Let's jump next year when my promotion will end. I'm not good at bargaining and stuff, but if I shop at bell then call them to cancel my stuff and get to talk to rentention, will I still be able to try to get a good deal even if for like my first year, I got it for free?

So here's what happened to me.
My 6 months of VIP @ 42.99 just ended, but I still have a free box for 1 year (6 months into that).
Rogers CALLS ME and asks me if I'm happy with my services. blah blah. I complain about having to order the whole specialty pack just to get HD TSN. The dude says he will give me 20% off my services for 1 year, if I agree to a 1 yr term. I'm okay with that.
Then i'm transferred to a confirmation person, and all of this is confirmed. I made a point of asking if my free hd pvr stays in place, and she says yes.
Also, these changes weren't supposed to happen until my next billing cycle.
The next day I get a Rogers confirmation email. I open it, and it shows an immediate change to my account in regards to the 20%. Then, instead of having my hdpvr free, it's only 20% off. So i'm like WTF! obviously.
I call and supposedly make it to customer relations, where the chick tells me that you can't combine 20% off with a free hd pvr. The system will only allow 1 promotion for VIP and the box is apparently bundled with it. Is she full of it? How are all of you saying you have 20% discount, plus HDPVR for free? If she tells me you can't combine the two in the system, then you'd all be lying. No?
I told her I needed to think about what I want to do and call back a few days later.

I've learned from experience to always ask for a reference number on the call when changing anything in the plan or they confirm something over the phone because they mess up something most of the time specially when you're changing several things in your account.
I think those ones calling you at home and offer something to renew are third party agents, the ones doing the actual confirmation is rogers (i could be mistaken). So next time I suggest you confirm the package with the second agent, and get a reference number for the recorded call. Had the same offer experience with my home phone. They locked me for a year but there was no discount... lol. A quick call with a date and reference number fixed it.

I just called Rogers again (I am a new customer - have existing wireless but nothing else). they are offering me NOTHING for a 'new customer". over $150 per month for basic cable, basic HD channels, basic home phone and basic internet (which is all i need). the guy said there is NO FREE PVR deal whatsoever, that he'd like to 'know who is offereing this at rogers', blah blah blah. then he said that bell must be 'selling the farm' if they are offering me what i claimed.
Bell offered me a WAY BETTER DEAL. i'm gonna call rogers back later to see who else i can speak to, but i can't speak to retentions if i'm not already a tv / internet / phone subscriber, so how do i talk to someone who is gonna want me as a customer? i couldn't believe that no one would offer me any kind of deal to be a new customer...

If you're not an existing customer you won't get the retention deals. If you're looking for new service there is no question that Bell is cheaper.

After reading all the posts here..I called into Rogers wanted a Free HD-PVR Saturday July 4th. I had a Free HD terminal for one year with the purchase of my TV but that expired a month ago and I was now getting charged the regular monthly fee. The first time I called in failed. Not even sure I got to the Customer retention people. Got the usual run aroiund and not the offer I was looking for. Than I tried the 'Internet" and "Cancel Services" method mentioned in an earlier post. I did get to rentention. I used the switching to Bell line, I've seen their ads in the paper offering more HD channels for less. At first I was offered 15% off my services. I told the gal my neighbour was offered a free HD PVR and 20% off for a year. She told me she could do 20% off and a free HD terminal (not PVR) with a one year commitment. I pressed and asked why not HD-PVR. She said since I do not have an HD-PVR currently active on my account she could not give me one for free. So I asked would it be possible for me to add a PVR to my account and call back and get it free for a year. SHE SAID YES! I made sure I got a reference number from her. Went down to my Rogers video...swapped my HD terminal for an HD-PVR, called back in and got the 20% off and the free HD-PVR for a year. My bill with cable and internet went from over $150/month to $101 taxes in. Thanks to everyone for all the advice.

Ok. So if all of you are getting 20% and a free PVR, and on your bills the free PVR isn't erased for the 20% instead, i need to call back and try to get someone that isn't going to BS me and say they can't be combined.

20% off Roger services and 2 free 1yr rental of HD-PVR. This was the best they could do. No more free HD Specialty Pack.

I just called in and got Retentions.
Now that my credits have expired, I am paying a ridiculous amount -
$225 (inclusive of tax) for:
Digital VIP Cable with HD-PVR, TMN, and HDTV Speciality Pack.
Home Phone with 2 Features
High Speed Express
I just called it to have my credits re-instated, and the CSR claimed that they can't re-instate that promotion until at least 3 months have passed. Grr. He offered me a free HD-PVR, and a number of other discounts that would reduce my overall bill to approximately $175 per month, including tax. It still seems rather expensive. Anyone have a comparable package?

Called in the third day and got the free HD PVR for a year.

Do you actually need a contract to get the better choice bundles discount? I currently have a 15% discount because I have all 4 Rogers services. I recently got a letter saying this discount was expiring soon and I would need to agree to a new 2 year term to keep it. I always thought the bundles discount would apply as long as I had all services with Rogers. This is the first I've ever seen anything that mentioned a commitment.

As far as I know, the bundle discount has always required a commitment to keep the services for 2 years yeah. They make you agree to it over the phone. If you cancel before the term is up, you have to repay all the money you saved through the discount.

Technically yes you need to commit for two years. I wasn't comfortable with that and told retentions as much and they instead gave me 20% off my cable and internet (I have other discounts on our wireless portion). I did the math, and it works out to be about the same except no committment required. I have two free HD PVR's that will expire in April, at that time I would be willing to commit if they renew the deal.

Funny, because I was never told about this... I'm surprised they can take back discounts since there's nothing signed in writing about a commitment. Thanks for the info.

Hi guys, I'm currently with Rogers and my bill comes to about $160/month for Internet, TV and home phone. I called them and asked to cancel all services, they checked and they said they can only give me 20%, which after taxes will be $145 for all 3 services.
Bell is offering me this package for $86 + taxes:
1. Home phone with 2 calling features + 1500 minutes long distance within North America.
2. High Speed Internet, upto to 42GB/month.
3. 1 HD receiver and 3 basic receivers for my TV.
This is $87+ taxes, no other fees.
I'm thinking of switching. The only problem is Bell doesn't have the specialty channel that my dad wants (which is SBTN). But if I can save roughly $50/month for 12 months, I don't think he would mind not having that channel!
Do you guys think I should switch? Is there anything about Bell that you guys can forwarn me ?
Thanks in advance.

Robbers and Bell are two of the same. They both hold monopolistic views of competition and will both attempt to screw you whenever possible.

i almost switched to bell. then i realized that everytime i called bell, it (1) had to be within strict business hours (funny how that is NOT enough!), and (2) i was ALWAYS talking to someone in India. and they lie and say that they are in canada. anyway i am going to support Rogers just BECAUSE i want to support canadian workers, because they have great retention programs (just keep checking this thread!), and because they have better hours for help if i need something. even the email that i received from Bell confirming what we had discussed on the phone was FULL of spelling mistakes, and sentences that did NOT make sense (clearly written by someone for whom English was not their first language). i get that they can price things less because they outsource so much of their call centre staff (india), but i'd rather pay MORE and support workers here. i also find that the CSR's i speak to at rogers know what i'm talking about, because they USE the services themselves, whereas when i spoke to the Bell representatives you could tell that they were just using a 'script'.
up to you though!

42GB cap is pretty low. Unless you're doing very minimal web surfing (i.e. no downloading large files) I'd try to get that changed. One thing rogers is really good about is if you go over your cap, not sure about telus.
Anyway, otherwise looks like a decent deal.

I'm going to take a different approach when I call in next time and just ask for 20% from the start plus the free HD-PVR.
Let me know if you make any progress when you call in tonight.
Just got off the phone and at first the lady said she could only give me the same crappy discount that the guy offered me yesterday and I said I know you can do better then that...lol She came back with the 20% off cable and internet, $10 off a month on the phone and the 2 HD PVR's for free for 1 year. Looks like I'll be staying at Rogers for 1 more year

Ahhh!!! I don't know how to do this! We've been with Rogers for 15 years for internet and cable, cell phone for 22 years + my cell phone account and a separate internet account all totalling 300 a month. They won't give me anything and are basically telling me that I already have a really good discount from the 10% (better choice bundles). This is so frustrating.
I didn't threaten to cancel because I feel awkward doing that.
Now she's telling me to downgrade my services to save money.
What is the best way to go around asking for an HDPVR + 20% discount?

Tell them Bell will give you the deal, also you can tell them "co-workers" just got the deal in which they will say we can't match other clients bills but will do it anyways and finally tell them I guess I'm going to have to cancel and only once did I actually have the guy so "okay, let's close the account"....lol

I guess I will have to do the whole 'cancel' thing. I'm going to try again tmr.. I already called 3 times today (including my dad calling to make me an authorized user. I'm scared of getting blacklisted or something.. although I was super polite when I was talking to them. Hopefully they're nicer on Fridays.. being so close to the weekend.
Does anyone find it harder to speak with cable retentions than wireless? They throw credits for my cell phone bill so much easier (I've never had to threaten to cancel), but with cable, I feel like I'm lucky to be even getting the 10%..hahhaha
So should I just flat out ask for the PVR thing or should I ask them what they can do for the account? It's kind of hard to know how to start the conversation..haha.

What I always do is to tell them I'm thinking of canceling and switching to Bell. What this does is to give you an out (if you think that this CSR is not giving you what you want) to say "Ok, I'll think about your offer some more."

Called Rogers retention services (Internet-> Cancel Services) and told them about a Bell offer for Cable+Home Phone+Internet that came upto $90+taxes
Rogers offered the following.
Free HD PVR for one year.
20% off on cable (Basic HD package only)
HD Speciality channel pak free for 1 month
30% off on Express Internet
$10 off on basic home phone + call display
Totals $93 inclusive of taxes. :)
What kind of discounts do you get for the VIP/Movies packages?? (I have only the basic stuff)
Thank you RFD for all the info :)

Make sure you keep an eye on your bill.
I called Rogers on Christmas eve and told them about the Bell promotion (free HD PVR for 12 months) and they offered me 24 months. I was extremely happy and I picked up my new PVR.
However, 6 months later I noticed they have been billing me $24.95 a month for the PVR. I called to speak with an agent and they said "hmm...that's strange? We see the 24 month free rental on your account....let me transfer you to customer service to take care of this."
They transferred me to retentions and the lady said there was no record of it and the best they could do is offer me 12 months free starting today? I tried to cancel but they wouldnt even let me!!!! The account is in my wife's name!!! Ughh!
I'm gonna try calling back tomorrow. I'll escalate and ask them to retrieve my original call from their voice loggers. They should be able to do it.
It was very frustrating and the lady was a real "C U Next Tuesday".

Weird.. got the same letter too. 14 years i've been with them, I never had to renew anything to get a discount. Called rogers directly, they didn't know what it was, didn't see anything expiring on my account and told me to ignore the letter (he actually said it sounds like a scam.... lol). He double checked again just to make sure and I asked for a reference number to the call just in case I get dinged on my next bill.
Called the number on the letter out of curiosity and it said something about a "pager customer cannot be reached" or something. wtf

Total for Internet = $34.57 (Hi-Speed Lite)
Total for Cable TV = $60.30 (Digital VIP Cable + HD PVR)
i called in to renew my services and savings for another year....I think I got
-$10 off and 20% off for home phone
-20% off and upgrade to express internet free for 3 months

(all with the better choice bundle of 15% off)

Its good from a rogers revenue perspective, but don't assume that it will mean jack squat in terms of building credit. When I was younger and in university, I had a Rogers cell phone in my name, a $120/month cable and internet bill from them (split multiple ways with roommates of course) and a Bell landline, but no credit card (I had never wanted to deal with the bill at the end of the month). Later, when I finally applied for a credit card, I was turned down because I had no credit record whatsoever. All those years of paying like clockwork, and it didn't mean squat.

For the free PVR: do you need to already have it, or can you buy it once you convince Rogers to give you the free year or two? I ask because right now I have just basic $30/month cable. I'm buying a new TV next month and I want to upgrade to digital cable/HD. Will I already have to be an HD customer to get the free box rental? I also have Rogers internet but my cell phone service is with Bell (no home phone).

I called Rogers today twice since my HD specialty package and HD terminal free rental was ending and I got nothing. They just wouldn't budge even an inch! :(
I tried calling in and said 'retentions' to the automated voice and got nowhere with the CSR I got. Then I tried again, this time saying 'Internet' then 'cancel services' and still got nowhere with another CSR. All they keep saying is that I've already gotten promotions from them and they can't extend or give new ones to me even though I've been with them for over 20 years! :|
So now all I have is 20% off bill and free HDPVR for two years left. No more free HD specialty pak or 2nd HD terminal. I tried the Bell called me up and offered me a good deal etc too and didn't work either. So anyone got anymore ideas or are they really clamping down these days and won't give out anymore freebies?

Just got a call from a Rogers rep earlier tonight to remind me that my 2 years free rental will expire soon. I asked him if there's any other promotion and he said there's none because they can't do back-to-back.
I didn't use the PVR feature a whole lot but I'd like to keep my HD channels so I will probably downgrade to a HD box.

We call every month, speak to managers that "clear up" the issue and then again the next bill is wrong just the same. Why can't they get it right?
I am so close to just canceling everything and telling them to shove it.

My current service with Rogers are:
Extreme Internet for $49.99 after $10 off.
Digital VIP
1 HD PVR 1 year
1 SD BOX 1 year
HD Specialty pack 1 year
All for $40.
So total to about 96 after VIP discounts etc..
My promo expires on Sept 15.
I tried calling in today and the rep also won't budge on continuing with the promotion. I am happy with $97 a month for all these and just want to continue being a happy rogers customer. They said they could not do anything for me.... :(
I guess I am gonna have to call again tomorrow..

It's best to call AFTER your promo expires. If your promo expires on Sept 15, then call on Sept 16. Then when you call and they pull up your information, it will not show that you had the promo in the past (unless they actually do some digging). My promo expired a couple days ago, I called tonight, and was able to get the promo again as the CSR didn't notice I had the promo before.

thanks for the tip. So it would be better to downgrade first for the month prior to the promo expiration date or else the bill for september would be at full price right?

Well, I decided to call back and I finally got a good retentions rep who was able to offer me the deal again. Here is my new deal:
Free HD-PVR again for one year
20% off cable for one year (Digital VIP /w HD Channels)
30% off internet for one year (Express)
System Access Fee waived for home phone (Classic Value Plan) for one year
Total with tax came to $120.
So I guess it does work back to back. Another year with free HD-PVR. Woo hoo!!!
Does the 20% off cable already include the discount you have for your 3 bundles?

phoned up, talked to a nice enough rep after saying 'cancel my cable'.
was told that i cant get any deals for about 2 months and a week (or 3 weeks after my last deal expired)
It seemed pretty easy that he saw my last deal ended, should i call up another rep now and attempt for a deal or is it true i will have to wait another 2 months because no real deals will work on my account

I was offered two year free PVR like everyone else on Aug 7 last year. Since my TV 1 year promo was up today so I called as I think about switch to satelite TV early or late. My surprise and shock is the lady said "We don't give you free merchandise. If you leave the cable service, we are going to charge you 1 year for $24.95per month as you have two year contract". I told her "No, the person who offered me this promo never mentioned anything for contract, he just offered me for this promo...." she said she is going to document this that I need to be pentalty for the contract of 2 year free pvr.
Very shock of this customer service. They need prove if I agree on any contract right? Just to double check in case I am wrong... I am going to fight for sure. I have all other services with Rogers as well.

....so I have called Rogers and cancelled my TV service entirely since my promo is ending in 3 weeks and they simply don't want to show me that they want to keep me as a customer. So I called Bell try to cancel my home phone to see if I can waive the move fee of $ 50 , they loyality group rep offer me their basic TV with 3 x sd receivers and the Chinese combo pack with home phone all for $ 57.49 for the first 12 mths and $ 72.xx for the 2nd 12 mths, and yes it is 2 yrs contract. It sounds pretty good..what do you think ? maybe it is time to 'really' cancel your service with Rogers and maybe if there are enough cancellations they may wake up and start offering good deals again..

Anyone else in the same boat i.e. your 2 year free rental is about to expire and what do you do?
I decided to call Rogers and tell them I would like to cancel the cable packages because the bill is getting out of hand now that I have to pay for the HD-PVR rental. The first person I got on the phone waived the fee for another 12 months  when I told her I was about to sign with a competing company.
I didn't want to sound like greedy mofo so I didn't negotiate for another 2-year term :D. I will take this for now and I am safe for another year with no rental fee. Bring on the football games in HD!!!
I don't know about you guys but I have always had good experience calling after working hours. Seem like the people are more easy-going and accomodating.
:)
P.S: Waiting to get a $20 grocery gift card from Rogers because they made an outgoing call to me a few days ago to remind me my rental HD-PVR promo is coming to an end. Guess it's a moot point now but the GC is coming nonetheless...

I called 3 days ago and told the lady up front that my 2 years free PVR is about to expire and that I am interested to see what they can do for me.
Without being pushy at all I got 12 months of HDPVR, 12 months of HDbox (not PVR), 30% off internet, 30% off cable.
...so it is totally not true that if they know you had an offer they will not extend it

My attempts only gave me 20% off all my Roger services and two free HDPVR rentals. Not exactly the same as my discounts previously with Rogers VIP discount, HD pack free discount, free box rental and so on.
They are all over the place but once I'm done with my 1 year contract with them I need to find alternatives. I can't stand Bell with their offshore support.

hmmm i have 2 free PVRs and VIP
I also have two outstanding cell/data plans, extreme plus internet and home phone all at good deals. I like rogers and have always got a good deal from them.
For cable
I Pay about $66 taxes in for 2 PVRs and VIP plus HD specialty which I think is decent. It includes about 10% VIP discount and 15% Bundle discount. Comments?
I would buy a PVR from them but I have cooked two in two years so far, sonot really worth $400 to me... that and I think the software is terrible! I have one of the PVRs up soon but I would also like TMN HBO service, has anybody got a good deal including TMN? $17 a month seems a bit steep as I am just paying for a small number of shows I would watch. I will try and call early and see if I can renew, never had a problem with back to back, I like to remind them of my loyalty (7 years) and prompt bill payment (not hard when its preauthorized).

When I ported my cell from Bell, I got setup with a rogers retention cell plan.
I moved in to a new house about 1.5 yrs ago. I got all 3 home services (tv, internet, home phone). I got a decent deal, and when the first year was nearly up, I called back and got a few more discounts, plus free HDPVR along with free HD channels, and a second digital box for free.
Now, with 2 cells (I ported my wifes # over too) and the 3 home services, my bill is on average about $180ish/mo - that's everything included (taxes, SAF's, etc, etc)
Keep in mind that YMMV.
I spent about 25hrs worth of phone calls and waiting on hold to get the deal that I've got.
Sometimes you get a good rep, sometimes you don't.

Called Rogers tonight, was lucky to be transferred to Customer Relations. The lady was nice, I told her that I am going to switch to bell and she offered to try to match what I can get from Bell. Finally I got:
1. 30% off Internet
2. 20% off Digital VIP
3. 20% off HD Speciality pack, first 4 months free
4. Free HD PVR for 1 year
Not that great but I think I can live with it for a year:D

Does anyone have the problem when after getting the new 20% off the Digital VIP cable, your Better Choice Bundles 15% discount gets reduced dramatically?
I called Rogers to ask about that and they said that since I got the new 20% off Digital VIP, my Better Choice Bundles 15% discount does not apply to the whole cable portion anymore, only to the extra outlet included in the VIP package (that I don't need) + any specialty channels.
Ended up I don't get as much savings with the (20% off the Digital VIP cable + Better Choice Bundles 15% discount) vs (Better Choice Bundles 15% discount)...just to let you guys know...

I got lucky that my 20% off wasn't on the VIP thing. They gave me 20% both cable and internet services and then I saved 10% off my cellphone bill with the better choice bundle. Also got one free HDPVR rental for 12 months.
Bill is around 120$ and it says I saved over 90$.

My 1 year promotion was ending next week so I called into Roger's too see what I could get. I was lucky and got a nice rep who looked to see what he could do.
Overall, I was satisfied with what I got so I just accepted the offer, just have to check the bills next month. Everything was for 1 year again.
- 30% off High-Speed Internet
- $10/month credit on home phone (Only have 1 calling feature)
- 20% Digital VIP
- Free HDPVR + Standard Def box
- HD Specialty Pack.
$120/month tax in.

I can't believe I missed this thread all along...
Currently, I have the following services with Rogers:
Basic Extended package for cable;
Extreme for internet;
2 wireless lines (@ $45 each line before all the bogus fees and taxes).
I am also receiving a 10% discount on all services from the better choice bundles package, however, I signed for the 2 years contract just last month.
If I can subscribe to a 20% discount that you guys mentioned, I think it'll bring down my bill by a bit. Any advice on how I can approach them?
Thanks for any help!

I believe you signed a 2 yrs contract for wireless service. You probably can try to negotiate a 20% discount for your cable service. I believe if you cancel your cable now, you just need to pay back the bundle discounted amount for the cable portion.

My promos was expiring on Aug.20th, but I managed to renew them couple days ago.. so if you have 1-2 weeks left, you can give them a call and try. I wouldn't recommend it if you still have 1 month left. Also, the new internet promo is 30% off and the old promo was 20%, so they were able to remove the old promo codes and apply the new one.

I've haggled with Rogers over a dozen times in the last year and each time I use the same opening lines. If you're unsure if it's a good time to negotiate this method always works.
You: "Hi, I'm just calling to see how much notice I need to give Rogers if I wanted to cancel my internet/cable/home phone."
Rogers: "I can certainly help you with that. Usually you need to give 30 days notice. May I ask why you wanted to cancel?"
Hint: this is the magic line I always wait for them to say. From here on in, you need to know what you want out of your contract.
You: "Well, I think my promotions are ending soon and "Bell" was offering me pretty much the same services for less."
Rogers: "Well, it looks like your promotion ends blah, blah, blah."
From here on in it's pretty much smooth sailing. They may tell you to call back in a few weeks. They may ask you what Bell is offering. Make sure it sounds reasonable like the 20% off, 2 PVR's, etc and they will try to come up with a plan. Funny thing is you already know what they'll offer you. If it doesn't work, call back later. Good luck.

You could see if Bell has anything cheaper to offer, call Rogers and ask them if they can match it.
The best deals are when you're already a customer...I got my deals less than a year in. When my promos were almost up I called them and used the method I described above. I wouldn't sign anything more than a year - that goes for cable, internet or cell phone.

So the bill would Total: $69 + tax

Just got off the phone with Rogers...did exactly as described and got the my PVR free for another year plus 20% off my cable and packages. probably should have haggled more to get more discount on my internet and cellphone, but I started the conversation only referring to cable so alas that's my mistake. I got mine about 6 months ago. I lived in a condo and just said that Bell was in our building and offering a PVR deal to new customers. The retentions person gave me 2 years free HDPVR, 1 year free HD specialty channels (which have been a hassle because they only set it up for 3 free months, and I had to fight ever quarter to get someone to renew it) and they gave be 20% off my cable and internet bill.
I have Rogers VIP and the movie network so I am guessing the added 20% was because my bill was pretty high already.

My one year deal with Rogers is up next week. I called Rogers and they were able to offer me the same thing as I currently have for another 12 months on my first attempt.
Of course, I started my call with the usual phrase... "I would like to cancel my service" and was redirected to the retentions department.
Here is what I am getting:
Price: $55.25 (all taxes in) for one year
Digital VIP Cable
Timeshifting Themepack
Customer Choice Package (5 channels - Military/G4/NHL/Food?/some crappy channel my wife wanted)
HD Specialty Channels
HD PVR Rental
Plus I Already own another HD PVR + 2 other SD Boxes
I'm pretty happy with the deal. It would be a major pain in the arse to actually switch to Bell. Also, my older tv's and tuner cards continue to work without having to drop a box in front of it.

Well I didn't get a 20% off - but i did get the free PVR for the year and I'm happy with that. Maybe I should have tried calling back but that was basically what I wanted given I have Digital Cable, HBO, TMN etc.. and with the bundling of cell phone and internet i get 10% off already - so she said she couldn't add on the extra 20%.
However, I did have to ask outright "Can you provide me with a PVR unit for free, at least for one year"
After all the prompting that Bell was going to offer me a better rate when everything was summed up...they would have let me cancel until I said 'can you offer me XYZ"
Good Luck

Either or - if you've got one already, call in and try for the reduction in monthly charge. If you don't have one, call in and try to get them to temporarily give you one (1-yr or 2) and waive the monthly charge (and yes you just tell them which Rogers location you would like to pick it up at and mosey on over when they say it'll be ready for pick-up).

You do not need to already have the HD PVR box. I had the simple digital box and was instructed to go to the store and pick it up. Dont wait too long because I waited a week to pick it up and they said my deal was not visible on the computer. I had to call again and got the same deal.

I know others have done better but with just one call i dropped my bill about $45/month for the exact same services and got a free HD PVR out of it(which I will try to renew in one year)
Tried to get a free year of the HD specialty pack but no luvk there either, maybe I should have told them I would think about it and tried again later or is my deal pretty good ?

My 2 year free HD PVR rental just expired, called them and asked them to extend the free PVR rental (without threatening to cancel, just asked if they could help me given how many years I've had services with them) and they did it for 1 more year with my verbal commitment that I would stay with Rogers for TV service for that year. Also asked for $10 off my home phone for a year and got it, I'm happy. Again.

Offered:
$10 off home phone
20% internet
20% Cable TV
HDPVR extended for 1 yr
Digital Terminal for 1 yr
Not the greatest, but I took it. Just as an FYI, I actually did call Bell to get a comparable package, and in the end, the 1yr cost diff is about $50 more with rogers. Given that I have all my services with them, I chose to stick with them.

Is the with extreme or express high-speed internet?

I got the same deal like some of you folks for my mom, free HD PVR and some discounts knocked off the bills
She used to pay about $130/month for 3 services (home phone, cable and TV) and will be paying $90 moving forward.

You won't believe this, but Rogers screwed up my order! They "missed" the changes to my account and started to charge me the full price. Jerks!
I'm on the phone with them now and they still haven't figured out what I should be paying even though the notes are on my file.
I'm sure that I will have to wait for my next bill to have this sorted out.

This is common with Rogers, I have never made a change with Rogers and got a bill afterwards that was correct, even for the most simpliest service change.

I called in to Rogers this past Friday. I went in with a free HD-PVR and free standard digital box both free till the end of the month and was paying full price for my cable package and high speed extreme internet.
Although I said to cancel my services I wasn't immediately sent to the retentions department and after a brief conversation with the first CSR he forwarded me to 'customer relations'.
I told the person I was speaking with that I had some promotions that were ending and that Bell had offered me 20% off and two free PVRs.
After thinking about it for a while and examining my account the person agreed to what I said I would be happy to take. Both boxes free for another year and 20% off both cable and internet. Bill went from ~$143 to ~$112.

I tried calling today to extend my promotions for another year. My promotions are ending in September and when I called in to tell them that they could only offer me what I was paying plus $6 extra. I told them I would think about it and called them back.
I currently have:
Rogers Home Phone = $33.95 ($10 off for 12 months & SAF Waive) = $24.36
Rogers Hi-Speed Extreme = $59.99 (20% off) = 47.99
Rogers Digital VIP Cable = $40 after discounts
Total is around $125/month
I tried telling them Bell was offering me a package to comeback but it seem they couldn't do anything else for me. I guess I'll try again later on the week.

similiar to what they offered me... said my bill was going up 5 bucks cause thats the max they can give me... what ever, paying 5 bucks more is better than 35 bucks more...
does threatening bell to cancel work? they are charging me 45 bucks just for home phone service... any other good phone line companies?

Anyone know if there is a thread similar to this one to get a good deal on ExpressVu? I did a quick search but didn't find anything specific like this thead.

Called today and tried to get discounts on wireless and cable. For the cable, they said I already get the HD-PVR free and you are only allowed one discount per service.
For wireless, I'm currently on an old EPP plan ($20+SAF - 150 mins, Unlimited evenings/weekends from 8pm) and got offered this: $20 + SAF for 250 mins, unlimited evening/weekends from 8pm and Caller ID.
Isn't this basicallly the new EPP?

One discount per service? With all the different answers you get everytime you talk to a Rogers rep, you wonder whether they just make it up as they go along.
We had a free HD PVR and free HD box that were expiring. It took three or four calls (the reps were nice but kept screwing up the discounts) but I phoned in and got the PVR free for another year. The best they would do on the HD box was a 20% discount. They also offered a 20% discount on the rest of our cable bill (VIP), which we didn't have before, and that more than pays for the rental on the HD box so we came out ahead anyway.
So with HD PVR, HD box, VIP cable and Lite internet (20% off this from earlier this year) we're paying about $95 tax in vs $150 without discounts. That's an extra $660 in my pocket this year. Not too shabby.

Hi,
I've the wireless and Internet services with Rogers for years but have switched to starchoice for TV 2 years ago. Now I'm thinking of going back to Rogers for cable TV if they have good promotions. I called yesterday, the CSR from the Sales Dept did not offer me anything except the bundle discount from current 5% to 10%. He really did not care if I want to switch back!
Does anyone know another number that I can call to negoiate the price for the cable service, since that SCR kept saying that he could not offer me anything.
BTW, I own the Starchoice HD receiver and looking for HD PVR from Rogers and good discount on their VIP program. What kind of deals are you guy getting these days? Thanks in advance!

30% off internet
$10 off home phone
I told them that Futureshop has a great deal on a Bell receiver and I was considering switching. Then told her Bell has more HD sports than Rogers so she gave me 2 months free super sports pack - just in time for football!

Man I GIVE UP!! I've called Rogers several times the past few weeks to try and get a new deal, but every single time they give the same line that I already had previous discounts as well as a current discount (20% of Tv bill, free HDPVR) and can't give me anything more. :(
Now my bill has gone from about $55 up to $85+. Maybe I should have called in before my discounts ended and perhaps it would have been easier to extend my discounts then, I dunno. There's just no more bargaining with the CSRs anymore. Every single one I've called its always 'You already have discounts, sorry but can't give you anymore'. :(

Yes I ask for customer relations or customer retentions and I usually ask the CSR what dept I'm talking to and they tell me I'm in the right one. And if I'm not talking to the right person, they usually transfer me to someone else. So I'm pretty sure I'm getting the right dept. or maybe they're lying to me I dunno. :(
But either way, the result is always the same. They always tell me that I've had previous promotions and that I cannot have additional ones at this time or there's no new ones available.

That's weird.... I have 3 free HD PVRs
I wonder what the criteria is for them handing out multiple free boxes?
For anyone looking for ammunition to negotiate multiple boxes try telling them Bell offered you their new fiber optic Bell Entertainment Service.
http://entertainment.bell.ca/en/package.html
With this service you can hook up multiple TVs to the same PVR so Rogers might cave on offering multiple PVRs if you use this to negotiate.

I just checked out the Bell Entertainment Service. It looks sweet! But I couldn't find any details on internet speed (must be fast if it is fiber to the home) or transfer caps. The single smart PVR looks awesome. I'm running a component video matrix to distribute HD to three sets in the house. It would be nice to get it all done with a single box.
There's only one downside.... select areas of GTA only.

This is Bell we're talking about here. They are mis-leading and close to outright lieing in these adds. ALL Bell internet is Fiber Fed, it then uses copper to the home, so these adds are likely for the same low-grade internet we all know and expect from Bell. So lowered 20GB cap and probably 4MB lines.

for the Bell Entertainment Service the speed depends on how many TVs you have hooked up....
For example if you have 3 tvs like me they put you on a 25 mbps profile. The monthly cap is 60gb though. Also the internet speed varies depending on how many people are watching TV while using the internet.
2 big draw backs of the service is that it's not available everywhere in Toronto and there are less channels than express vu and rogers digital vip.

you need a one year contract in order to get the 20% off cable, 30% off internet.
only reason i didn't switch to bell yet is that their satellite is terrible. the channels are so spread out and most of them are crap, and during a storm, you'll lose signal. I think its easier to negotiate with rogers rep about pricing then bell. the 2 times i threatened to cancel, they gave me the deals right away.

Hi all!
Well, I finally made a call into Rogers today. Prior to this call, I have been paying $120 for both Express internet & Extended basic cable. I called Bell first just to see what they were offering and from there, I called Rogers. The nice lady CSR was kind enough to give me 30% off my internet, 20% off digital VIP with FREE 2 HD PVR, 1 HD box, and 1 month free specialty HD. My total after taxes is appx. $95. Way better then what I paid, plus I'm getting more!! Just too bad I forgot to ask for HD specialty channels :o(

How much are people here paying for just Digital VIP before taxes. I only have Digital VIP and am currently paying 45.20 with taxes in. I have had the free HD PVR for one year. My promotion is about to run out next month and I phoned in today hoping to get it renewed. They told they can offer the 20% discount BUT my bill would be $81! They said they can no longer give me the promo rate or the free HD PVR. I will phone back to speak to a different rep, but I was surprised that the bill would double and they wouldn't budge at all.

I got my new bill this morning and it went from 109 to 139 and I still had more promos that were about to expire next month. I had a hard time getting the call transferred to customer relations. When I finally got transferred the guy told me my next months bill would be more than $200 when all the promos ended. He was very nice and reduced my bill to $124 taxes included for the next year. I have all digital channels, vip ultimate plus movies, all hd channels, high speed express, time shifting. I was happy with it considering I had promos for the past few years now.

Anyone got any good bell promotions that I can use to throw at shaw when I make the call?

I called shaw. Chose Cancel internet option.
I got a really nice guy which I assumed wasn't the retention line and instead of saying I wanted to cancel I tried being straight up like someone else on this forum did.
I told him the deals people were getting but in the end, he offered only:
6 mo. free PVR (purchase for 250 after 6 mo.)
6 mo. free HD plus
Home phone for 14.95 for 1 yr
and nothing changes on the basic cable/fairchild/internet.
I know my mom is happy with it because it's cheaper than what we are paying already but it's no where near what you guys are getting.
Any suggestions? Should I call Bell and see if they can match it?

i feel so ripped off that you can do a 40.13 tax in for digital vip grrr i have to call rogers again and yell at'em, maybe get a 2nd pvr or something :(
LOL! YOU feel ripped off? I am paying 125 ish a month for cable and internet! Rogers just makes me so mad that they charge these ridiculous amounts, yet most people that call in and threaten to cancel get reduced rates. If they would just offer the rates that you get when people threaten to cancel they would have so many more customers they wouldn't need to charge the high rates.
Anyway, sorry bout the mini rant. I tried calling a while ago before I saw this thread on RFD and the lady I spoke too was rather rude and would not budge one iota. She told me we had been given special discounts the two years before (one year was 3 months of all channels - movie channels [big deal!] and the other one was the 10 percent off you get when you sign up for service [what everyone got than!]) and we should be glad we got those deals. I was incredulous as we were offered those deals and did not ask for them.
Than there was what happened last week when we moved. We asked for a specific day for installation as we were only going to be home than, but they sent the tech out a day earlier. So than we had to wait a week before they guy could come out again! I was furious and called in and complained. The lady was all apologetic and said they was nothing they could do. I told them to bump someone else to get us installed as it was the day we were supposed to get installed. She replied that it is not Rogers policy to bump people, so I asked, well how come we did than? If Bell wasn't so bad I would just cancel and go with them.
So my question is has anyone called in to get a deal after moving? Would they be more likely to give you something to stay or would they assume that since you went with them after you moved that you wouldn't need any enticement to stay? I really am considering switching for the above treatment and because we moved into a home and money is tight, but if I could get the deal most people in this thread are getting, it would come out to the reduced levels of service I would be settling for. Should I just be upfront about that and see if they bite?

My digital VIP packaing at 42.99+tax is expiring soon. I called in to retention to cancelled and couldn't extend the promo but offer me 20% of and extended the HD PVR rental to 1 yr. I told them to cancel it and they told me that I was locked in a 2yr contract and said I had to pay $100 early cancellation fee.
Were all you guys locked in 2yr contract for the Digital VIP promo last year?
They also said for my home phone and internet I was locked in a contract too. I think that is bs though because I was never told that when they gave me that promo.

I'm not sure but when I called in for the Promo @ 42.99 they never mentioned a 2 year commitment. What's funny is I got my internet and home phone discount seperately and when I asked when they are expiring they said December, but I'm on contract with them until October of 2010. They just doesn't make sense to me. I think she was just making **** up so I wouldn't cancel.

I am going to make the call today to cancel Rogers, I will give them back their 3 boxes . I am thinking about going Fee over the air, or Star Choice.
Does any one know anything about the star choice packages and services.
We currently are paying 130.00 per month with Rogers and just getting crap. So I thought it might be better to do the Over the air, at least you get a better variety of channels.
If anyone has anything to say about Star Choice, I would love to hear comments.
thank you

When I got my deal last year, I was given a one year "contract", but the CSR told me that it was not binding. If I left early, there would be no cancellation fee. That's crappy that you are locked in for two years. I would ask for a hard copy of this agreement with your signature on it.

Called Rogers yesterday to schedule an installation and figure out all of our services.
I figured this would be the only point of leverage I'd have until a couple years in worth of service. I mentioned to them that I had contacted Bell and that they offered me blah blah blah. Actually I just made it all up but here's what I was able to get from them.
Internet:
High-speed Express at $46.99, with 30% off
I bought one of their modems a month ago for $100, and got a $100 credit as well as 3 free months.
Home Phone:
Value Plan Classic at $24.95 plus system access fee, with 15% off bundling.
This gives us 500 long distance minutes and two calling features
Cable TV:
Digital VIP at $63.47 but with $5.98 discount for 12 months, with 15% off bundling. They also add on a digital service fee of $2.99 a month. What the heck is that about?
I told the CSR that Bell was going to give us a free HDPVR as well as an extra outlet with a SD box free along with it. She matched this and gave it to us free for a year.
I'm happy with all this and glad I asked for the discounts before service started. I figured there'd be no hope at that point b/c I'd already agreed with their first price.
Happy discounting RFD'ers. Thanks to all who posted their experiences.

Thanks for the advice... I was really ticked with Rogers' increases this year, so much so that I already have DSL service to check it out. However I called and managed to get $85 monthly knocked off my account (20% off internet/cable + 2 free HD PVRs). Also got a family member's more basic account moved from basic + extended to digital VIP, and added a HD PVR, for a couple dollars less than it cost before.
I guess Rogers has me for a while longer...

I tried to get this deal for my friend, but they said since he is a new customer they wont do it. Rep said he would do it if he could but that the system would not let him. Found this to be dumb. I might try again with another rep see what happens.

From a bargaining stand-point, I'd think it's pretty difficult to find ways to lower your bill when they've already signed you up and have you on a contract.
Actually, contract or not, you've probably paid an installation fee and the savings of threatening to "switch" would almost be moot.
I think your only way of raising the bar here is offering to bring them more service (e.g. cell phone that's currently w/ another company) on the condition that they give you.....free PVR? Whatever it is you want.
You'll have to be creative.
Good luck,
J

Two months is nothing. You would have better luck getting deals on your cell phone.
Now maybe if you threatened to cancel your cellphone also, then they might budge. But chances are you are on contract for your cell which would mean cancellation fees which puts the ball back in their court. I think you will have to wait a while to get discounts...

Well I had originally ordered rogers through online. Then I changed my mind once I found out you need to be with them for 12 months before they offer you the pvr. So when I called to cancel the work order for installation. They lady on the phone asked me why I would like to cancel told her decided to go to bell they gave me a better offer. Was on the phone for a while. Finally got a HD PVR and 2 hd boxes plus digital vip all for 39.37 before taxes. Probably could of gotten more but I am happy with that. Now lets hope they don't mess up on my bill.

I just signed up for rogers as a new customer. best they'd do is give 25% off the VIP pack for 6 months, and 5 bucks off the monthly PVR cost.
as a new customer, you don't have much leverage. being an existing customer is a different story imo.

If you're on a contract then you won't have much leverage. If you're not on contract, then your threat of moving to bell should work and they should be able to give you somewhat of a discount.

Had been wih Rogers for 4 years (Basic Cable, Extreme Internet and Cell). After reading this thread, gave them a call "to cancel my Cable and Internet" and said Bell was offering great deals.
Was paying $40 for cable + $65 for internet (discounted to $45 for six months)... Got VIP Cable for $40/mo + HD-PVR free for a year and Extreme Internet for $45/mo.
Thanks for the tips..

I was in the same boat where my 42.99 VIP package was up. Now they offer 20% off everything.
VIP: 62.47-12.70 = 49.77
2 HDPVR: 2x 24.95 - 24.95 = 0.00
Movie Network: 16.95-3.39 = 13.56
HDTV Specialty Channel pkg: 8.95 - 1.79 = 7.16
Hi-Speed Express 46.99 - 9.40 = 37.59
Basic Line + 2: 33.95 - 10 and $0 SAF
Not the best discount, but better than the first time I called.
Good luck to everyone else..

-20% express internet
42.99 Digital VIP
free hd pvr (2 years)
(monthly bill was just over $100
the -20% and 42.99 digital vip expired, so i called in and was offered -30% on internet but no change in the price of cable.... Whats available in terms of digital vip discounts? my family is quite satisfied with the lineup and previous pricepoint. Any suggestions?
I was given a reference number, will I have to run with this on future conversations or could i start negotiating on a clean slate?

Just renewed my credits and free HDPVR.
Got the following:
-1 year Free HDPVR
-20% off on all Cable including Digital VIP, TMN, MPIX, HD Specialty Pack
-30% off on Extreme Internet
-Free installation (well, I moved in to new location)
-Free 6 PPV Movies
Total bill is $124 tax in.
The conversation highlights:
-They will not budge on free HDPVR for more than 1 year but they said if I call back before it expires next year, they will "review" and may extend it at that time again.
-The first guy wouldn't give me 30% on Internet, but only 20%. So, the second call took care of that.
-I used the Bell Entertainment Service to negotiate.
-I was polite and in casual manner with the agent which seems to help your case.
-I simply said I am satisfied with Rogers services but I can get the same service from Bell for this much. I let them come with the "maybe, we can do something here" reply. In my experience, do not beg for a discount directly. Show them you really mean business and you would change to Bell if it comes to it.

I called in and successfully negotiated a good package when we moved a couple of months ago.
Then in the past few weeks Rogers has been auto-dialing my number and leaving a message telling me one of my promotions was going to expire and I'd lose one of my discounts if I didn't call in. They were calling me like 3 times a day!
I called and wasted a lot of time getting anyone to figure out why I was getting called, as every discount on my account was good until mid next year. After a lot of head-scratching they decided to give me a choice of either a $20 Esso gas card or $20 grocery voucher for the inconvenience.
Long story short, make sure you WRITE DOWN the deals you get and set reminders for yourself as to when your various deals expire.

I just called retentions and was offered 20% off Digital VIP, 20% off the HD speciality Package, 30% off Internet and upgraded a Standard PVR to a HD PVR. The Rep was very rude to say the least, stating that there's nothing he could do and he is NOT going to offer more.
Had before:
Digital VIP - 42.99
HD Specialty - waived
Digital Services Fee - wavied
2 year HD PVR
1 year Standard PVR
VIP Discount
15% discount for better choice bundle
20% off Internet
$10 off home phone with 6 features
$132 before taxes
now:
Digital VIP - 49.98
HD Specialty - 7.16
HD PVR (2nd year now)
Standard PVR upgraded to HD PVR
30% for internet
$10 off home phone with 6 features
$158
Is it possible for them to waive the System Access fee for home phone or waive the digital services fee or offer any other credit because it seems that they can, but the retentions rep I got was enjoying the fact that I was paying more.
Suggestions are welcome

I recently cancelled 2 cell phones on an emergency plan, and Internet on Rogers.
Anyone have ideas on how to negotiate a lower cable bill?
Right now I have the Digital VIP package and HD specialty, at regular price, which is $70 plus tax. However I own 3 digital boxes, hence I think I might be in a bad bargaining position.
I'm not sure telling them that I'll go to Bell when I have 3 boxes I got recently would be very convincing. I guess maybe I can make them worried that they'll lose all services from me.

Free HD PVR
No Digital Services Fee
Free HDTV Channel pack
they were willing to give me the boxes for free, but they wouldn't waive the digital services fee and the HDTV channel pack. they were only willing to give me 20% off of those.
my other promos are expiring at different dates so i have to make a separate call for those.
based on another user's post above, it seems like they're no longer offering free channels and digital services fee.

there is nothing that can be done. Trust me, I pressed them very hard on the free HD pack and they simply would not do it. They said they have different promotions now and that free hd pack promo is over. You can get 20% off though but that's about it.
Also, do not forget to ask for free PPV movies. I supposedly got 6 free ones but I will believe it when I see them on my bill. So stay tuned for that.

i'm gonna have to go with the 20% off the hdtv channel pack. there's no way i can watch tv without HD national geographic. that alone is worth $5 a month! with the discount it will come up to about $7. i guess that's not bad for the channels we get.
the free PPV movies won't show up on your bill. you have to order them first, and then get charged, and then they discount you for the movies. don't be surprised if the discount isn't applied though. i had to call in to remind them for mine.

Well, my previous 2 years free HDPVR is about to expire, so I called and when I got an agent I asked to speak to 'consolidated services - customer relations' and got put right thru :)
Got the current deal:
-30% off internet for 12 months
-Digital VIP pack (previously had combo pack) 42.99 for 12 months
- Free HDPVR for 12 more months after current free promo expires
- 3 months free of HD Specialty pack (then $8.95 if I keep it)
- free HDTV channel pack (do they even charge for this?)
I couldn't get them to waive the HD spec pack fee, or the digital services fee.
Total savings for more channels: $17 - hey, its better than buying a HDPVR!
THANKS RFDers!

Sigh. I wish I can still get this offer. After 1st 12 months of this pricing Rogers only offers 20% on internet and VIP package.

If you mean your PVR could help RECORD those programs and watch them later, then yes. And this is also why I said it's not worth the money for me.
Does HD Specialty pack also include HD Timeshifting, TSN2HD, HDTSN, Score HD, Raptors TV HD? OR are those already included in the HD Channel Pack?
The HD Specialty Pak includes a few West Coast US network stations (ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox) plus TSN, Showcase, A&E, etc, which the free HD channels do not cover. The Score is included free though.

20% off digital services fee
20% off HD Specialty Channel package (HDDSC, HDNAT, HDFOX, etc.)

Well finally had time to call when they were open and got 20% off cable and internet and free HDPVR for a year. Pretty sure I could have gotten another box if I had another tv, but I don't. He actually seemed to want to give me more, well he did ask if that was ok, I asked if there was an HD pack he could give me, but he said, sorry no.
What should I have asked for? I am just happy to have the reduced rate and free HD, but more free stuff is always great. Just asking so I know what to ask next year.

they have promos that vary throughout the year. once i called technical support and complained that my HDTSN was always interrupted when my blackberry was sending/receiving data. i got a call from a rogers rep a few weeks later asking how my experience went. i said i was dissatisfied, and they gave me even more discounts.

Just called Rogers.
I DID honestly just get a Bell offer as it's now available in my building.
Rogers gave me:
2 HD PVR's 1 year free
Waived install of 49.99
1 month free Specialty HD + nature/adventure channel
Digital VIP channels
6 Free on demand movies (journal entry of .60/month/computer issue).
All in - $60.73 after the 1 month free expires.
I was paying $73 all in with 1 SD box, and digital VIP package.
Thanks all!
Even the rep said after the 12 months expires on the PVR's - to give them another call. He said maybe they'll extend, maybe they'll give pay 1 get 1, or I can always say I'll return both a pick up a SD one again as leverage.
It was my 2nd rep today. First one gave me essentially the same items/same price - but the e-mail quote magically nearly DOUBLED.

I have the VIP Ultimate + Movies Pack
Last year I found this thread and got 20% off plus a free 2 standard boxes and 1 hdpvr for 100 all in (including the HD specialty pack in this price as well as two intl channels)
My promotions were expiring tomorrow so I called in today...long story short retained my 20% discount for another year...still free box rentals except i upgraded a second box from standard to digital at the same price...now paying 101.12 all in about the same as before and an extra HD box so hard to argue with that. I coulda pushed for another HDPVR i think but i dont actually have another HD tv i just wanted something more for what I was currently paying...:o
I said that bell was offering me a good deal and made up a deal (i said it was similar to what i had now except that i was getting the extra intl channel and hd box)...the rep said that Bell is pushing hard to convert Rogers so..

My question is, do you HAVE TO have other Rogers services (like Internet, Wireless, or even their "Home Phone") to get that "free" HD PVR?
Have anyone with ONLY cable been able to score some good discount? Sure cutting down from $150 to $100 is good, but do they (Rogers) actually give a "free" HD PVR for sub-$100 cable account? And does it HAVE TO come with a contract (be it 1 or 2 years)?

Yes, I only have cable with Rogers. I have Bell for internet and phone.
My original bill was $74 with VIP and 1 SD box. Now I'll be at $60 for 12 months with 2 PVR's. I had to talk to SEVERAL people though. They also tried to scam me by doing up a work order for home phone which I don't want. I also managed to get the $50 fee for install waived.

Yes, they also offer discounts on just one service, but their incentive may be less. All depends on how you talk them down though.

Rogers is coming tomorrow to place the 2 HD PVR's.
Everytime I call, I get a different price that I should expect to be billed after a few of the 'one month' free items drop off.
Now, apparently, I will be billed $44 tax in. This is for VIP. 2 HD PVRs (free for a year), rebate on the digital services fee, rebate on the local programming free, 20% cable.
How is this possible when I was paying $73 incl. for VIP with 1 SD box? Very confused. I guess I'll find out when I get my bill.
As it stands, the regular price of my services is $134/month, so I'll be getting $90 a month free for 12 months, plus the $30/month I'm saving over my last contract?
If it seems too good to be true, sometimes it is... I'm worried!!

Rogers Express (44.95)
Digital VIP ($59.95)

All of the above Free for 6 months and the prices in bracket thereafter.
Here's the clincher, only a 12 month VERBAL committment is required, but I can cancel both services without penalty after 6 months.
I'm incredibly skeptical of the offer, but he insists it's valid.

When the girl from Rogers called, she said it was SD receiver only, but then I was able to talk them into HDPVR. The 1st person (from craigslist) insisted it was HDPVR, when the girl from the call centre called to confirm the order, it turned to SD receiver for free. Eventually, after hanging up and them calling back, it's a HDPVR

I have rogers home phone and am wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue. I live in brampton and i'm trying to call Mississauga, but I am receiving a message stating that long distance charges will apply. If you ask me this is BS as brampton and mississauga are apart of the same municipality, AND when I call Toronto there is no long distances charges. Most other home phone plans don't pull this BS but rogers doesn't surprise me with their shady tactics.
I have to get my cable package and internet package renew soon too...is it advisable that i ask for long distance minutes for their home phone OR is it a better idea to get home phone from someone like Primus or someother VOIP company?

Thanks again RFD! I'm so happy with my new promo.
My old promo expired last month, it was just a free HDPVR (When this thread started 2 years ago I had been offered free HDPVR + free HD channel pack for 2 years, but they accidentally had canceled that after 1 year, when I called back to complain that my promo ended earlier than promised they had given me the free HDPVR for another year but not the free HD channel pack. Very typical of Rogers when they f*** up but don't want to make up for it).
Like others, I got offered free HDPVR and 20% off services. We have digital VIP + HD channel pack + Express internet and now it works out to 98.30 including taxes.
This is for one year but NO CONTRACT, I can cancel anytime and won't have to refund the promo.
Alternatively, I got offered the same deal but 30% off internet only instead of 20% (so would have been basically 4$ a month cheaper) but I had to sign on for 1 year contract (would have had to reimburse promo if I canceled my services). I declined as I'm not sure we'll stick around for the full year. I am re-considering though, I may call them back.
Previously I had been paying 127$ (including taxes) when I only had the free PVR. When that ended a month ago, my bill jumped up to 153$ (yikes, what a ripoff! I can't believe I paid 127$ for a year when I'm now paying 30$ less)
I asked that they apply the promo retroactively to 5 weeks ago when my prior promo ended and my bill went up from 127 to 153 and they said no problem, it just means my promo will end a month earlier next year (who cares, I'll just call back for another one!)

I called yesterday.
I was already receiving the full cable package with movies (non-HD), home phone and the second highest internet package, plus two cells through my corporate servers.
I told the CSR I wanted to know what i had to do to cancel my cable as I wanted to get HD and rogers said they didn't have any promos.
They passed me through to retentions and I was offered a free year of HD PVR plus 20% off Cable (or maybe all services, not sure). I said "only one PVR?" she then said, "I can give you two"
So for the cost of the HD specialty package (for TSN and TSN2) less the 20% savings on at least my cable services, I get free HD on two TVs for a year.
The only drawback was that I had to return one of my three "free rental for life" SD boxes as You can only have four boxes without having to add an outlet.
Thanks RFD and all posters!

as a result of this thread i was inspired to call rogers because i was ordering new TV service to compliment my new HD LCD set.
i called and told them i was canceling my internet service so i think i immediately got a retention rep. told them bell offered me a free HD PVR for a year with all programming (equiv to VIP package) if i transferred my internet to them as well. he went on hold for a couple mins and i ended up with the following:
extreme internet, VIP package, HD specialty package and HD PVR for $96/month for one year (taxes in) - normally would've been 155 (all taxes in).

Thanks to this thread, I am able to upgrade my HD box to a PVR, add on the HD Specialty Pak, and actually pay $40+ less a month (at least for the next 12 months).
I called about a week ago to downgrade my cable from Digital VIP to Digital Basic, thinking of saving $30 (because I only watch CNN on that tier, which is not worth it). But they screwed that up, and I am billed the same in the new billing cycle.
So I called, and thanks to one of the posts in this thread, I was able to reach retention directly. The girl I talked to was nice; yes, rapport is critical here. This may not be the best deal, but to me, it's good enough, esp. when I am negotiating on CABLE ALONE:
Free HD PVR for 12 months
Digital VIP (incl. Digital Services Fee) - $39.xx
HD Specialty Pak - $8.95
TMN - 20% off
Fairchild - 20% off
Yes, it's a 12 month contract.
I know it's just a number game. And I have to wait for my next bill to confirm her math (which didn't add up after the decimal point).
She originally offered me the same $39 something VIP w/o the HD Specialty Pak and w/o those 20% off for TMN and Fairchid. I then mentioned the HD timeshift, and she agreed to throw that in for just about $2.50 more (20% off both TMN and Fairchild comes to $6.xx).
Now, instead of downgrading to Digital Basic and saving $30 a month, I retain (hey, that's the point of retention!) my VIP, upgrade to an HD PVR, and get HD timeshift, all for $40 less.
I picked up the PVR right away, and am watching it now.

If you say cancel services, you might get retentions - some do, some don't...if you don't get what you ask for, it's probably not retentions and you just try again.

What more you looking for? I pay the same thing except I have 2 HDPVR's. If there's more I could get, I'd like to know :D

If you say cancel services, you might get retentions - some do, some don't...if you don't get what you ask for, it's probably not retentions and you just try again.
Thanks to the tips of a previous post (forgot which) in this thread, I was able to get to retention directly via 888-ROGERS1\CABLE\CANCEL.

Take a look at my previous post. My subscription to TMN AND Fairchild (Chinese) probably helped though (together they cost $30+).

As a new customer, I called Rogers and pretty much got the message that they have no interest in my business - $67/month + taxes for VIP with an HD-PVR. Nice to hear that their retentions is better, maybe at some point I'll sign up with them for a few months then cancel and see how that goes, since I've gotten nowhere calling as a new customer. There just isn't enough TV watching in my house to justify that cost. I'd like a PVR, but not at that price.

recently just bought a HDTV, my first HDTV. So I call Rogers for Digital VIP Package and this is what I get:
$42.99 + Tax for 1 year;
1 free HDPVR for 1 year;
My multiple outlet charge removed;
and Fairchild is already part of the package.
And a year later, I'll be using OTA instead since the signal quality from Rogers is crappy in comparing with my friends who were using OTA.

So I currently have VIP with 20% off and a free HDPVR and no DSF. PVR ends Oct 23 and 20% VIP ends Nov. I called the 1-888 number and said CABLE TV then CANCEL...went straight to retention.
I asked the girl if I could renew my current deal because I'm thinking of switching to Bell or OTA for free HD. Anyhoo, she tried for 10 mins and all that came up was 6 free movies for me... MEH.
She said since I was a customer since 2002, she'd try to get me something, but no deals came up on the system for me. They are using a new system "SMARTLINK" or something like that. Anyhoo, she said I'm probably no getting any deals because my current deal has not expired yet. She told me to call after my deal expired to see what comes up for when they pull up my account.
I figured since I was already on the phone, I might as well try it for my dad, so I conferenced him in over the phone and he authorized me to speak with her and when she pulled up his account, managed to give him 20% VIP and free HDPVR, but has to be on a 12 months contract. He said OK, he agreed and she processed his account.
By the way, I was chatting with her and she said there's only 2 retention call centres - one in Brampton and one in Moncton. Their lines are open 9-9 weekdays and 9-5 on weekends. She said to call on the weekend instead of Mondays, since you'll wait in the queue for a while. I'm assuming this is for EAST customers, because they have to service the West customers somehow and I do remember calling retention for my wireless needs around 11PM at night and I got CSR from the west.
Oh yeah, she didn't wave his DSF but total tax in was like $54.19, which is not bad.

Yeah, if I got an offer like that I'd sign up. Was this as a new customer? Do you have any other Rogers services?
I've called twice, and been quoted $67 each time as a new customer..... Of course, they keep mentioning there are better deals if I sign up for phone or internet, but I have both with Teksavvy, and there is no way I'm switching either.

HDPVR Free for a year
HD specialty free for a year
Digital VIP - 64.
Ultra Lite 35
Now I have
HDPVR free for a year
20% off - VIP
20% off - HD Specialty
20% off - TMN

Had to agree to a one year contract.
The customer retentions guy was a bit of a dick about offering the HDPVR again for a year. He mentioned this would be the last time I would getting this promotion and that they were discontinuing free HDPVR in like 3 days (so this coming Monday). Who knows though he might be full of crap. But I figured I would let RFD'ers know just in case.

2 weeks ago I got a message from a Rogers rep offering:
Free for 1 year: Cable VIP service with 4 hook-ups, Home Phone with 6 features, Internet Extreme, 1 HD Cable box, 1 SD Cable box, installation, activation, no fees, no contract to sign. If I wasn't happy I could cancel with no penalties.
Didn't pay attention and never returned the call because it sounded very much like a scam. Last week, got another call and this time I asked all the questions and even got the reps name. He emailed me the whole offer and yes it was valid. I called Rogers directly and they told me that this offer is usually for new home buyers, but he hadn't heard they were expanding it to existing homes.
Figured out leaving Bell, who had all my services except wireless, would save me over $2200/yr. Even if I was to pay Rogers, without installation fees and equipment rental, I would still be ahead of the game.
Gave Bell the opportunity to match, because I know they'll be hounding me with phone calls after I cancel. They couldn't even come close. It was a no brainer to change.
Signed up with Rogers and the installation is tomorrow morning. Called Rogers to confirm the appointment and the rep was shocked to see all the services were being offered free for a year. I'm really looking forward not getting a bill for these three services.

I don't think they care if you have to return the PVR as they're still making money off you...the trick is to say you want to or are thinking of cancelling all the cable and not just the PVR. See if that works...I'm sure you'll get more.

Here's what I was quoted:
Keep in mind that I`m a new customer
1-year contract
vip package with HDPVR
HD channels
Time shifting, etc.
$64
Rogers Express
$40 for first 6 months
I asked her about discounts on the boxes, as some people are getting them free for 12 months. She said they don`t have that promotion anymore. No budging on the price... I even told them Bell had a lower price and she didn`t budge "we don't pay attention to our competitors, you will have to make the best decision for you".
Any additional boxes I had to pay for.
Pretty wack.

are your bills suppost to be very weird after this? For some reason after doing retentions on my Home phone + TV, my bill skyrocketed..
on my Cable, it was agreed that i pay 42.99 / month w/ 1yr free HDPVR .. this is what it shows as on my bill.
Digital VIP Cable - $63.47
Savings : 12 Month Discount - -$18.99
VIP Digital Terminal - $24.95
Digital Services Fee - $2.99
Vip Discount - -$5.98
Something seems wrong already.
Before i was on the normal VIP Package, paying 62 a month.
Now on my home phone, it was agreed that SAF is waived and $10 off every month for a year.
i feel robbed...

I called Rogers today and told them that I was considering moving to the Bell Entertainment service as the prices were so good (see other thread re: Bell Entertainment). They put me over to retentions and I received the following deal:
Free HDPVR for 12 months; additional 30% off of my Hi-Speed Express internet; and additional 20% off of my HD VIP package (with HD and specialty channel packs) for 12 months. In addition to the HD PVR I also have a regular VIP digital terminal for another television.
Before calling I was paying $137.51 per month (and I was getting my PVR free until December 2009). After the call I will be paying $105.06 taxes in. I did have to take a one year contract, but that doesn't matter to me.
Overall, I'm happy with the result.

It absolutely baffles our minds that people are willing to pay that much per month to Rogers (or Bell) for a very mediocre/compressed broadcast service. OTA smashes anything they can offer in terms of quality but if the masses are happy with their retention deals then let the sheep follow the blind herd into monetary oblivion.

There is a lot of programming that is ONLY available by having a subscription to a provider.

I had pretty much the same experience last week. I asked for retentions right away and said I'm switching to bell. They offered me 20% off my total bill for cable and internet. I had to ask about waiving the HD pvr fee because bell wasn't going to charge me. They gave me 12 months as well (I was coming the end of my 2 year free hd pvr rental). I think I'm at around the $105 mark as well. They didn't mention any 1 year contract though. The discounts and free pvr would last for 12 months. The rep said call back then and they'll see if they can extend the same offer again.
They mentioned the fact that since we've been with them for 12 years they want to keep us happy.
I'm happy since the bell entertainment package wasn't available in my area yet.

I too had a similar conversation just now with Rogers. I had 2 HD PVR's that had just come up on a 2 year contract. I called a few days ago and the Rogers CSR said there was no way he could give me the PVR's for free any more and all he could do was give me 20% off my whole bill. Even after I explained I was thinking of switching to Bell he wouldn't do anything.
I called back today and spoke with another rep. I didn't even have to mention about switching to Bell but just spoke nicely to her and joked around a bit. I asked what could be done to save me some money and she offered the following:
- 30% off Internet
- 20% off VIP package and keeping my 2 HD PVR's for free
- 20% off Home phone and she threw in 250 LD minutes per month
This is all on a 1 year contract, but she said to call back in a year and there will more than likely be a similar promotion.
Right now I'm one happy camper...I was worried I wouldn't be able to keep my PVR's. Thanks RedFlaggers!!

This absolutely baffles our minds that people who have ota seem to think they get channels people want to watch and seem to think its supreme. Cable has channels that ota does not have... you only get handful of network channels which are below mediocre at best and the few are happy with their OTA then all the sheep follow the blind herd into the OTA fanboyism.
Realistically speaking i rarely watch abc, nbc, fox, cbs, and other crap being telecast ed ota. I am more interested in channels that are not available ota.
For the record ota does have superior picture over cable or satellite, but not enough meat to fulfill my mindless tube watching appetite.

People make the choice for this form of entertainment, and some people don't even have a choice as to what provider they have.
Apartment that faces the wrong way = no satellite. So for us it's "Robber$" or nothing.
In Ottawa I'm sure we could get enough channels OTA (and fill in any missing new shows from "other sources"), and buy more DVDs to fulfill our entertainment needs. It just wouldn't be worth the hassle.

and my total comes to about 125 CND

I called, i was able to get a free HD PVR for 1 year. All i asked was if there is any promotion or free trial for a PVR and he said I'm eligible for 1 year free. I asked if i should cancel my SD terminal and he said to keep it because it'll be free for the year as well.
I guess after a year i'll complain about something and ask to extend it.:cheesygri

I just called, and I got the 20% off my TV and internet, (the funny thing is I already called about the internet and got a discount on that already, so i am wondering if I got the 20% on top of the already discounted price), however I was unable to get the PVR, so I just did an upgrade
and my total comes to about 125 CND
I am happy with it
I guess you guys are lucky. in BC the CSRs are the worst and they never offered anything better. I have regular cable and called and asked if I can get a better deal and they didn't budge. I was paying 100 bucks for TV and internet. I said telus is offering a better deal but they wouldn't match. I cancelled my internet and went with Telus and over weekend I ordered Bell TV so I'm cancelling my TV with them too.
Shaw is a crappy company with horrible customer service. Thumbs up to anyone who can get a better deal outta those cheapstakes.

i just called in a week ago ...... my current promotions were ending in november.. so i had a month to go.. but i think i got an amazing retention deal... atleast thats what i think.. and these promotions r agains gonna be on for another year.... but heres what i did..
i was paying 115$ for my cable and home phone together
which included
- 3 digital terminals
-basic cable
-30$ multicultural pack
-home phone with 1 feature.
now i called in and said i need to cancel and blah blah to get to retentions...
then i said i just bought a couple of hdtvs and plan on buying 1 more.. and bell called me yesterday out of nowhere and offered me an amazing deal which is just hard to resist.. i said bell is offering me some thing close to 100$ for my cable and phone services which includes whatever package that is comparable to vip cable. and 3 hd boxes...
so the rep kept me on hold and came back with another offer..
he said he could offer me
1 hdpvr for 1 year
2 hd terminals for 1 year
vip cable
30$ multicultural pack
for 140$ taxes included
i said its still 40$ off what bell is offering me... but i love rogers and wld like to stay with it... so if he could give me something to work with, that i could fit in to my budget i would really be grateful to him.. i specifically asked for 125$.. for everything taxes included..
after keeping me on hold for another minute he said " I actually have another promo code that can help me make it 126$.. i said thanks n all and he sets up the work order...
after everything is done..i asked him if he cld throw in a standard defination box as i have some extra old tvs sitting in my home.. and wld like to put them in my bedroom. and he made another work order.. and agreed for that..
so now i have
1 hdpvr for 1 year
2 hd boxes for 1 year
1 sd box for 1 year
vip cable
16 regular HD channels that they offer with vip
30$ multicultural pack
1 homephone with 1 calling feature..
and the amount i pay is $126 taxes included
i pay 21$ for my home phone and 34$ for the multicultural pack (including taxes)
so effectivly my cable bill comes up to..
126 - homephone bill-multicultural bill
= 126-21-34
=71$

I just talked with retentions yesterday and this is what they offered me. This is the 3rd time I called in 3 days, as they had jacked up my cable/internet bill up to $150.
Previously they were unable to offer me a free PVR as they had offered me a discount on my HD VIP package (from 64 down to 42.99) and 30% off internet and threw in a free SD receiver for life.
I then called again yesterday and was fed up, and ready to cancel when they offered me the following promotion:
2 free HD PVR Boxes (for 1 year)
Free HD receiver (1 year)
Discount of my cable (20%) - with Essential package
So my bill will now be about $60 before taxes, after taxes close to $70 a month. (JUST cable)
I'm definitely going to cancel my internet package as well, as $39 or even $25 what they were going to offer me for a year for Rogers lite (25gb downloads) is not worth it in my eyes, as I could get 200gb/month for only $29.99/month.
How is this deal?

Your deal sounds very good and one that i don't expect anyone will get especially 2 free HD PVR + 1 HD + 1 SD.
By the way, who is the service provider for the internet that offers 200GB pre month.

The internet provider that I'm switching to is Teksavvy. They use DSL, but its 29.99/month for 200gb/month.
If you want to use MLLLP that's $4 extra, but will increase the dl rate by quite a bit.
They also have unlimited d/ls for $39.99/month.

Ok I just called them (first try) and asked if they had any kind of cable promotions going on. We got Bell internet last year and told them Bell has been calling us many times with different kinds of promotions including a year of free HDTV. We have been using "ultimate cable" which is just 70ish channels coming through the cable (no box) which was paid for by my apt. I dont think it shows up on the account but they still said I've been a customer "forever" so they were happy to offer a free year of HD PVR and I also squeezed a bit more out of them. I had a really nice rep so YMMV. Anyways I ended up with this deal.
HD PVR free 1 yr (includes the basic HD package)
HD Specialty Pack Free 2 mths
2 free on demand movies
All I have to do is pick up the box this weekend :cheesygri

Okay, my 2 year PVR deal was up on the 27th, so I started phoning. First try, nothing. Second try, today, and I got what seems to be the standard deal: Free PVR for a year, free second cable box, 20% off cable. I'm only a cable subscriber.
Rep claimed it was only supposed to be for those who had been subscribers for over 10 years, but gave it to me anyway. I've had Rogers since I move out 3 years ago, is it my fault I'm young? lol
Being polite and mentioning Bell helped. It also seem to help to have a straight number as to what Bell had "offered" me. I told her Bell had quoted me $53.99 for the same channels + PVR, and that's basically what she gave me in return.
I've become very addicted to my PVR, but I could never see paying $25 a month for it. If they actually had a somewhat current piece of technology, maybe.

wow. Some of you are getting shafted lol
I called in for my dad, and they were going to GIVE me a new PVR, free. Simply for resigning onto their brand and for having two services & 3yr. contract.
For one service, the cable only, they were gonna give me the HD box free of charge. Simply for resigning with them, last time my dad was with them was 3+ years ago now.
It is the 'winback' offer.

i recently called in for my dad as well. he already had an HD PVR for free and wanted a second one for a new TV. when i called and explained this, the lady saw my current discounts and said "before i deal with that, i can bump your current monthly bill down even more." she gave me the second HD PVR for one year without any resistance at all. this is on top of the usual 20% off cable, 20% off internet and some other discounts that i can't recall (HD channels, standard box, etc.). my dad's account has been with rogers for over 10 years.

They said I can only have the 20% OR the free HD PVR.
What time to people call in? Maybe I am calling at the wrong time!

I was originally on basic analog cable.
Rogers gave me a free SDPVR for a promotion if I paid the $3 digital fee. I found out after a month that the hard drive on the PVR died. Technical services told me to just take it into a Rogers store to change the box, but the stores didn't carry SDPVR anymore. Then tech support said I could exchange it for an HDPVR, but the store said they need a work order from Rogers Cable to do this.
After speaking to a very nice CSR on the phone at the Rogers Plus store, I got 1 year HDPVR with the digital cable fee waived and 20% off my basic cable bill. :cheesygri
So for the next year, I have HD PVR for ~$24 before tax without any other service with Rogers. Nice for one year, but man what a headache I had to go through for those two days to get the issue cleared up.
Does anybody know if Rogers will notify you when the 1 year is up or does the full cost just show up on your bill one day?
Thanks

You have to be ready to call their bluff and actually cancel the service.
When I did it I said, "that's unfortunate that you can't combine the offers, I really want to stick with Rogers but Bell is offering me such a better deal. Can you hang on a sec? I have another call."
I left her on hold for a few minutes and when I came back I asked her if she was able to work anything out, and she gave me the 20% off and the free 1 year HD PVR.
