View Full Version : Not hot: Original Xbox Discontinued - TRU has a few

I was waiting for a price drop, but noooooo, I had to pass up the BB Xbox + Black deal. Doh.

Major retailers no longer sell the original Xbox.

http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/sep/EEuyppuykVxgQAnFHN.php

I know this isn't a "deal" per se, but if you're looking for an xbox--you might want to grab one now. TRU Edmonton West had about 6 left. They were the original S units with no pack in game. Manufactured from april to june 2005.

YMMV, but buying one now might be "hotter" than having to ebay it for a new unit...

Please move this thread if it belongs elsewhere...

if it was discontinued/cleared at a ridiculously low price, then there might be a hot deal to be had... but if it's the same reg. price ($230?) then there's no hot deal at all...

u could prbly go to EBgames/BBV and still find some new being sold for the reg. price...

how am i being uptight? i said i understand what he was trying to say but its not a hot deal in any way and i also question why the OP would put a "NOT HOT" deal in the "HOT DEALS" section.

Yeah, that's true, people don't usually post deals that they already know are not hot in the hot deals section, it just doesn't make sense,
And even stating that it's "not hot" in the subject, it's kinda like... huh? why are you posting this here then?

I guess I thank the OP for the heads up but then this should be more of a discussion than a deal thread. Maybe it should go into entertainment or off topic? Until the prices dropped this thread does not warrant being in the hot deals section. It just makes it all messy and would piss off people doing a search for XBox deals.

Its just like Sony disontinuing the v1.5 PSP or the XBox 360 is in stock threads. Its informative, but not a hot deal. If you want to tell others where to get em while they still can (and if they want one), maybe you could go to the Request a Deal section?

And also, the OP did state...

Please move this thread if it belongs elsewhere...
So I guess if you don't know where to post something, hot deals seems to be the place where everyone else posts whatever since it's probably the most viewed

It just makes it all messy and would piss off people doing a search for XBox deals.
But yeah, if everyone were to do this, then it would get cluttered and messy, isolated incidents are ok though... everyone was new here at one time or another :)

The XBox isn't going anywhere. You don't stop manufacturing a system that still produces new software, and the 360's XBox emulation isn't perfect. If anything, there will probably be a new version of the original XBox coming out, and THAT is why they're not restocking the hardware at some retailers.

But I have to admit, it IS odd that neither FS or BB's websites have an active SKU for the console itself. Amazon.ca does, though.

Is there a consensus as to where this thread should have been posted? Request a deal? Computers and Electronics? Entertainment? Off-topic?

I wasn't trying to clutter up the forum, it was late (for me) and I didn't know where to post this...

Sorry!

Entertainment would be nice. If posted in Request a deal, it should be a reply to anyone who asks for an Xbox.

I Noticed earlier this week that even in the US the original Xbox is not in stock at Bestbuy.com, Walmart.com, and Target.com. Also shopping last night Future Shop and Walmart had non in stock Best Buy had one, and Toys R US still had 4. The prices at ToysRus were $199.

The rumor I read was Microsoft stopped production of the original Xbox last summer when Nividia made it's last shipment of video cards. After that the factories switched to making 360's.

The Xbox is most definitely not in production and will probably not ever be again. Microsoft took a different tact then that of Sony and Nintendo have in the past and decided to switch all their support to Xbox360 instead of continuing to support the previous generation. They also will not be offering incentives to buy the original Xbox as time goes on, as they would rather you buy a 360. This is mainly because the Xbox still costs a crapload to put manufacture because Microsoft didn't make very good choices with their parts when originally creating the Xbox. They haven't been able to drop the cost on the unit like experienced console makers Nintendo and Sony have been able to. They've remedied this with the 360, so their interest lies in selling as many 360s as possible to make up for the money lost on the Xbox.

There are still games being released for Xbox, but that will dry up soon. Microsoft wants developers to make games for the 360, so by cutting ongoing support it gives the developers a clear sign that they should move on as the market for Xbox games will only get smaller with no new console sales forthcoming.

The only part that sucks about the price not dropping and Xboxes getting scarce is that they are so awesome to mod. I have Xbox Media Center on mine and it's the best console I've ever owned.

I saw a few bundle packs in RCSS this week, and they were in the $180-$190 range.

Personally speaking if you want value, nab a PS2 (then buy 99-cent games on EBay  ), otherwise go 360 or wait for PS3. Now that MS has formally dropped support for the X-BOX, developer support will die off very soon too.

glad i got my 3, even though i got them at a premium cuz they're the three limited editions released in canada. made good use of them as media centers, after being modded and slapped XBMC as the dash. i'm sure i'll get quite a few more years of use out of them, even gaming since i have a decent collection and i haven't finished all of them, and several have good replay value.

i agree though that this post doesn't belong in the "Hot Deals" section.

This makes a lot of sense.

BTW I think the console will be easy to acquire used or refurbished for at least a year to come.

As for 360 emulation of XBox1 games, over 70% of original Xbox games are unsupported on the 360, including many major titles. I don't see much more emulation support being added as it's costly and time consuming, and there's no financial incentive to work on it (no money to be earned.) I don't think many potential 360 buyers think Xbox1 support is a maker or breaker for their purchase decision.

RIP for a great console. Cheap games will be available for years to come though, even if new ones are no longer made.

What would be funny is if suddenly xbox like was said went out of production and they had people tenting outside of futureshop again aka the 360 situation before christmas,,,limited quantities on hand,,,then we could start up the threads of spotted 3 forza bundles at the costco on queensway etc,,oh the irony :cheesygri

Probably the resale value of used ones will rise slightly, and modders will scoop up the remaining new ones. I don't think many people expected it to be out of production and off store shelves so quickly, I know I didn't.

I knew MS had stopped production but I thought there was a supply glut that would fill stores until Xmas 2006. Guess I was wrong.

That's why I thought I'd draw attention to it. Buying an xbox from TRU for $180.00 might not be hot, but if there aren't any left, well, it's hotter than not getting it at all. (new that is)

I thought they'd have warehouses full of them and have to slash prices to match Sony. Ooops!

I don't know about this - it has the potential to go either way, but I really don't see the X-BOX resale prices spiking that much, especially with the 360 out and the PS3 / Revolution on the way. Not to mention the price drops to the PS2 and Gamecube.

Short-term, prices could increase just because of the news, but I can't see people screaming for X-BOX systems at $300 with three next-gen systems and games on the market. Just doesn't make sense, especially if past history is any indication.

Don't really care where this thread belongs but if someone wanted to pick up a used/refurbed Xbox is there anything that should be looked for that indicates that it can be easily/best modded?

or - better yet - any signs a used unit may have already been modded?
