Just picked up a couple of these...since I write at weird angles and my pen always dies...you can supposedly write upside down with these, as well as on wet surfaces and cold weather...

only thing is walmart does not sell refills for them...
they were on clearance here at walmart for $2 (stoney creek)

same one as these

Just tested them out and they work quite well...happy with the purchase

Not too shabby.

Reminds me of the Seinfeld episode, The Pen.

HELEN: You shouldn't have said anything. What did you expect him to do? (the camera shows Elaine shaking her head at their dispute)

JERRY: He could have said: "Thank you, I like it too" and put it back in his pocket.

HELEN: He loves that pen.

MORTY: Oh come on!

HELEN: He talks about it all the time. Every time he takes it out he goes on and on about how it writes upside down, how the astronauts use it.

JERRY: If he likes it so much, he never should have offered it.

HELEN: He didn't think you'd accpet.

JERRY: Well, he was wrong.

HELEN: I know his wife. She has some mouth on her. She'll tell everyone in the condo now that you made him give you the pen. They're talking about it right now. (againe we see Elaine smiling at their argument)

JERRY: So you want me to return it?

HELEN: Yes.

MORTY: He's not gonna return the pen. That's ridiculous.

JERRY: Hey I don't even want the pen now!

MORTY: Jack can afford to give away a pen with all his money. Believe me. He gives me a check for 19.45. He didn't have a Coke. Ho, ho, ho!

This design (pressurized ink cartridge) is same concept used by astronauts.

I can't remember the movie but the quote is "It cost NASA 2 million dollars and 1 year to develop a pen that could write in space. The Russians used a pencil."

Ether way, can't really beat the price!

I can't remember the movie but the quote is "It cost NASA 2 million dollars and 1 year to develop a pen that could write in space. The Russians used a pencil." [.........]

It wasnt because they were so smart....they didnt have any money left after all the money spent with the cold war......UNREAL.

The Americans might have spent a lot of money....thats what they do...but the technology is prob used elsewhere....or in some other application.
Some country in the Far East ( no country mentioned) has prob stolen it by now.

by the way, that quote is false:

they both used pencils, but it was unsafe so they developed the pen.

But of course. George wouldn't carry a pencil because he was afraid it would puncture his scrotum. The pen meant a retractable writing utensil that, when extended, could double as a scrotum-puncturing weapon against hostile alien lifeforms.

writing upside down is a + for me....

most pens that i use when i write on a piece of paper backed to a wall or window, it starts to "fade" after a min. or so...

not that i write upside down often, but it might be useful once in a while....

myself as well...I do most of my design (programming) laying down in bed..so sometimes my pen is upside down or horizontal....and sometimes i'll sit up and write at weird angles....rarely do I ever sit at a desk and write...so it's quite handy for me

hi,
Went to Walmart in east end of Montreal to check for the pens. The only one found was made by Uniball and it scanned at the sticker price of $3.26. Might be $2 store-specific rather than chain-wide.

I bought one of the official space pen from MEC many years ago for 10 bucks. MEC might even have refills. Have yet to use it writting upside down as I suspects it'll give me a headache. Space is kind of hard to get to and finding an underwater writting pad is not easy. Neat toy but no more useful than my BIC.

Ironically despite your contempt for George you give him way too much credit as this pen was develop way before his time.

Bics often leak.....I would assume this pen would not?....a plus in itself.
How does it write.?.....what about ergos?....handling?

Just to clarify...You don't have to be hanging upside down to get its benefits....not sure why people are thinking that..

try imagining laying on your back and writing...the pen is upside down..and you're just laying horizontal...oh try that with a BIC too and see how far you get....

also try sitting up and writing against your thigh with the pen writing horizontally...try that with a BIC as well...

as for the poster who said they got the one for $3.xx...Yeah I know what pen you are referring too...they had that at my local walmart too...I was about to purchase that one..but my wife spotted the one on clearance in the hilighter section (not in the pen section..although same aisle)...went back today to pick up the last 2 they had since I see myself getting much use out of it...

They do....but in the end, you end up buying the refill. Why? Uniball does not fill the originals fully.

I too though of all the ways to use it before purchasing to realize in reality sitting at a desk with proper posture is the only way to write.

I can certainly imagine laying on my back and before arms are sore from holding the notepad be fast asleep (Sleep is underrated).

Glad you actually use this pen creatively. No doubt for 2 bucks it's a hot deal.

Ummm...what?

Firstly, it was a joke. Secondly, if I had contempt for George I wouldn't be giving him credit for anything. Your remark is a contradiction in terms.

Thirdly, I love George.

Fourthly, George fortuitously stumbled upon Nasa's secret use for the retractable pen in space.

Fifthly, sixthly, seventhly and eighthly: it was a joke.

these pens are great. i work in a restaurant and normal pens don't work everywhere i need, these do. examples:

- on oily/wet paper (its a kitchen ..)
- in the fridge or freezer (when i'm doing inventory)
- at all angles, on walls, on sides of boxes on higher shelves etc...
- on all the different materials i need to write on (plastic, cardboard, cloth bags, wood etc... just think of all the materials that food might come in)
- also it stays in my back pocket where it is constantly in a heated environment and has never leaked.

i've been using two interchangeably for the last year and i just went and bought two more cuz mine are just starting to get low.
highly recommend. might not be necessary in everyday desk-type use, but in different situations much better than what i've used before.

about what i was gonna say... even if ur writing horizontally (e.g. on a wall/window surface), most reg. pens will still start to "fade" real quickly... i hate that sometimes as u'd have to point down and wait for the gravity to "pull" the ink down so it starts writing again... kind of annoying esp. if u have to do that for an extended period of time.
