I had all sorts of problems with these..

My V2310CA laptop burned it incredibly slowly.
2 of 3 BenQ DW1620 drives would burn, the other would not recognize the disc.

Problem is at that price usually end up giving them away cause friend/relative wants like 20. Can't ask them for 4 bucks!

dash R is the older standard, plus R is newer. Supposely shouldn't make a difference in new player but I have an older vintage player ($700 DVD karaoke machine). Some MFR are better at -R, some at +R. Way to complicated, much easier in BETA vs. VHS days

setting the booktype for DVD5 media isnt very important anymore IMO. both + and - should be compatible with any DVD player these days. setting it for DVD9 media might be a good idea, though.

um... i'm sure BB would have another sale on these soon for $10 (or the equivalent for larger pks)

$10 is good deal, but so-so for $13 IMO.

They changed it sometime between 14:00 to 17:00 yesterday. Talk about a short sale. Technically they didn't "jack up the price", they reduce the sales amount.

OT: Gonna get rid of the PEPSI IPOD WINNER thing in your sig, yes it was sweet like the XMas hats but is now lingering like a stale bread/thread.

Keep in mind it's "online only" so if store pickup is not available you won't get it till next week with free shipping.

yup, both are made by CMC Magnetics, but HP seems to get pretty high grade CMC magnetics with their branded media. if i needed some DVDR's for stuff of less importance, i would definitely pick these up.

i haven't bought any HP DVDR's in a while, but buck said that the +R might be slightly better, but both should be ok.

If you only have important files to backup, I don't think you should even start reading this thread in the first place ;) Like quite a few peeps here, I/we like to keep a few 'tiers' or classes of discs on hand - 'very good' class (for important files) and 'cheap' class (everything else) ... These HP at this price fit the latter perfectly.

Good to reflect and learn from the past, more important though is are there any current or upcoming better deals.

Those PM deals are great (150% is dead) but way too time consuming. This one ia a couple of clicks for merchandise to arrive at your home. TIME is MONEY.

BTW: I didn't even bother trying to buy instore to use GCs. Couple bucks saving is just not worth the time.

But yeah, good result, but don't think solidburn is magically going to make burn quality 10x better on a well supported MID.

Ahhh ok - so solidburn is to increase burn quality for under supported/new MID's then that's not in the 1650's firmware?

I am confused tho - There's a new version of CD Speed? I think it was part of my Nero install bundle. How is the new one better?

Solidburn is for unsupported/poorly supported media types, media of variable quality or from multiple manufacturers, etc. CMCMAGE01 is a very well supported mid (in this drive), and your particular batch is quite good so gains will be negligible.

Having said that, solidburn usually doesn't hurt to leave on. It really depends disc-to-disc.

theres 2 settings for solidburn - one for supported media, and one for unsupported media. by default, supported media is disabled, and unsupported media is enabled.

by setting the booktype to DVD-Video, do you mean to DVD-ROM? BenQ drives automatically set all + media to -ROM.

Please tell me that they don't drop the box and run.

I had problems with them doing that even when it was signed delivery - or them just not bothering to buzz even tho I was home and taking it to the post office so I complained to Can Post HQ about a year ago and they stopped doing both of those.

My delivery was weird. Guy buzzed, I went out, got handed the package, started to walk back in side, then he said "oh does that need to be signed for", I showed him the front then he said "oh no never mind"; the box by "signature required do not safe drop" was not checked so it could be possible that's what happened with yours.

You're in the same city as the warehouse and I'm in a neighbouring city so by all right you should have got yours either when I got mine or before so I'm wondering if something is up with your delivery.

Yeah :( One time I was home, it said do not safe drop, and they left it infront of my apt door with 10 other apts on the same floor - the same floor as the laundry room so anybody could have walked by. That's what prompted me to call and complain. It's been fine since then tho.

I ordered two packs of DVD-R on Saturday April 29th, each was $9.97. It was sold out online but if you choose to have it delivered to your local store, for mines, I chose Downsview, it was available. The order went through and received notification email to pick up at Downsview.

Went to Downsview today and they dont have any available. Showed them my email and Manager decided to give me the Maxell 50-Pack 8X 4.7GB DVD-R as substitute, $9.97 each. I paid and gave me a receipt, showing paid for 2 packs of Maxell. Went home and noticed there is a $8 mail in rebate for each pack. I am going to mail it in and see, hopefully it will go through. Then I would be only paying $9.97 + tax = $11.47 minus $8 mail in rebate = $3.47 for 50 disc = $0.07 per disc. SUPER HOT DEAL.

I just checked the bestbuy site, showing $12.97 and 50 available. For the people living close to Downsview Best Buy, order it and instead of shipping, pick up at Downsview. If they give u the Maxell as subsitute, $12.97 + tax = $14.92 minus $8 mail in rebate = $6.92 for 50 disc = $0.14 per disc. Still a great deal, I think.

Hey [buck] can you comment (or point to link) on what good numbers are for these tests.

My LG can't do disc test so I'm not familiar with what's a good result.

Did you get and -R?

I will start by repeating what the DVD standard states:

-PI Errors must not exceed 280 at any time
-PI Failures must not exceed 4 at any time (unfortuantely, BenQ drives scan at "8ECC", which means they add up 8 consecutive ECC blocks and display it as a single block. This makes it nearly impossible to be 100% certain of the actual max value, but 16 is a nice number for 8ECC drives)
-Jitter must not exceed 8 or 9% (not 100% sure on this) It's not a big deal if jitter goes higher than this, but higher than 12% is undesirable. I personally prefer jitter max to be under 11% and average under 9%.
-NO PO Failures (see bottom right hand corner of CD Speed)

My preferences (Dolph thinks I'm super picky):

-PIE max under 30, average under 10
-PIF max under 10, total under 1000-1500, depending how tightly packed they are
-see above for jitter

By my standards, the scan I posted is a "very good" result. Be advised though, you're not guaranteed scans like me, and this media can be quite variable. It's still probably pretty good media.

it also depends on what drive you're scanning with. some drives (NEC and Pioneer in particular) are very inaccurate scanners. some drives also report errors differently. BenQ drives use an 8ECC, while Lite-On and Plextor drives use 1ECC, so Lite-On/Plextor drives will report lower errors than BenQ drives would so they should also have lower standards.

my standards are pretty close to bucks (maybe not QUITE as picky =P). I prefer my PIE's under 50max, PIF's under 10max and right around 0.10 average, and my jitter under 11%. jitter should be ok under 12% max, and even if its a little higher, it might be ok too.

EDIT: omg i just checked and i can't believe the hurricanes won 4 straight in a row, after Canadians were initially leading the series 2-0
that's quite a shocker...

Question - I bought the +R, the discs play fine and the nero quality score is 97% but if I examine the bottom after a burn I can see faint patchy black spots ? This occurs on both of my Benq 1620.
Has anyone else noticed this and is this even a problem ?

Thanks

Price has yoyo to sale $13, reg $15. That +R orange is so pretty. FUGLY on that -R red.

OT question: Burned a +R on LG4163. Six year old DVD player played it OK but 2 year old APEX wouldn't recognize, says "no disc". Works fine on PC. First time to burn +R. Do I have to bitset or something like that to get it to work.

Burned same movie on -R, worked fine. Both +R and -R took about 8 minutes to burn full disc.

Bitsetting for +R makes them more compatable for standalone players.

Didn't notice any patchy black spots. Were they all over or near the center or edge? How big were the patch? Was it obvious or do you have to look closely?

You have to look close under a light or something. It doesn't seem to affect playback, I just thought it was odd.
