So this dude dedicated almost a year of his life making this pic... coulda just used a camera ;)
Regardless, it's pretty awesome

Damen
This is my latest and most ambitious digital painting of a Chicago scene unveiled at Photoshop World in Miami on March 22, 2006.
It is a panorama of the Damen Station on the Blue Line of the Chicago Transit Authority.
Adobe Illustrator was used for generating the majority of the basic shapes as well as all the buildings in the Chicago skyline.
The rest was created in Photoshop.
" The image size is 40 inches by 120 inches.
" The flattened file weighs in at 1.7 Gigabytes.
" It took eleven months (close to 2,000 hours) to create.
" The painting is comprised of close to fifty individual Photoshop files.
" Taking a cumulative total of all the files, the overall image contains over 15,000 layers.
" Over 500 alpha channels were used for various effects.
" Over 250,000 paths make up the multitude of shapes throughout the scene.

Close-up 1:
The front face of the train was created in its own file. The reflections in the windows were added once the train was placed in position within the overall image.
The side of the train car was created in a separate file. Duplicating that file made it easy to add additional cars.
The duplicates required changing the reflections in the windows, the accumulated grime and the car numbers to make each car appear different.

Close-up 2:
Symbols, text and logos were created in Adobe Illustrator.

http://www.bertmonroy.com/fineart/images/Damen3.jpg
Close-up 3:
The grime was created with Spatter brushes, available within the Photoshop brushes palette, which were modified to randomize the effect.
The rust was created with the same Spatter brushes but with Color Dynamics applied. The rust was in a separate layer that was also given a layer style of Inner Shadow to add the dimensional effect of the rust appearing under peeled paint.

A camera would never get you that much detail on a part of the scene so far back. I bet even the buildings in the very back still have quite a bit of detail.

It took eleven months (close to 2,000 hours) to create. He may be good with Photoshop, but he's not very good with math. 2,000 hrs is way less than 11 months! :|
;)

That pic's probably going to end up in a computer museum somewhere. Amazing detail.

It is very impressive, but I'm not sure it's worth 2000 hours of someone's life. That said, if this is his "life's work" or the "masterpiece of his life", at least it is good. He even got to add his own name :)

you're right, but:

The painting is comprised of close to fifty individual Photoshop files.

so if you combine a truck load of pics from a digi camera, you'd get a lot of details too

Is it supposed to be realistic? Because I could tell the picture was artificial immediately. The ugly colour on the orange bricks tipped me off.

2,000 hours/365 equals about 5 1/2 hours/day.
Obviously, a lot of painstaking work was put into this creation. Well done.

WOW, you're really smart man!!! I wish I could be like you!!! so smart!!!

seriously, why do people always pop into convo(or threads) these days and put in a comment that puts down someone's work/hobby/likes, does it really make you feel all that smart?

no one said it looks realistic, i'm sure half the people that visited this thread knew it wasn't real at first sight of the pic, but it's the amount of details that the photoshop-er has put in that makes it impressive

keep these comments to yourself man, it doesn't make you look any smarter

there's always someone that's better than someone, unless they are truely the best in the world...so basically for anyone to be complimented, that person would have to be the best in the world then? well someone must have had a pretty crappy childhood

People trashing it are just ignorant, jealous or have no comprehension of art.

Yes a photo would do it, but why do paintings have such an appreciation and value? Ponder that, and relate your conclusion to this art as well.

It's amazing.

i was kidding about using the camera part ;)
but yeah, it's very impressive. look at the amount of detail spent on one little section (face of the train, for example) of the overall picture.
i wonder how he keeps himself motivated for 11 months working on one picture...

Kind of makes you wondered why there isn’t a higher resolution pic. There is.. it's 1.7Gigabytes...

But why would he want to give the high resolution image out for free? I believe he earns his living by SELLING the artwork, not giving it to you and me at no charge.

Don't take it personally.

There are a lot of losers IRL who have never accomplished anything. Any artist will feel a sick joy hearing them nitpick.

I love this art, but I enjoyed the pixel art posted after even more. I guess I am from that video game generation after all

Hey! I just saw that at the National Art Gallery in Ottawa last week!!!

Art is so vulcan to me...it's just layers upon layers of abstract....

I'm not an artist, but IMO contemporary art is such Bull...when I was at the national art gallery, they had a video of a guy blowing up bottles of water in the air....They consider that art!!!???

I also remember reading an article about some guy who put up a urinal on display....is it me or are artist running out of creative ways to stun the public...

Man!! Thanks for posting, OP! I seriously had no clue that such things can be done, and that photoshopping was such an art; I've been using it solely for touching up prints such as red eye, blemishes, removing backgrounds for a portrait effect, etc., but had no clue one can learn to do all of this art from the ground up using the photoshop program. Amazing! My husband is an artist, and I think he will be very interested to see what can be done with photoshop. He's only done sketches and colored sketches, but if he could learn to do all of this, he sure would have an eye for it. Any good photoshop tutorials out there? Thanks!

The Urinal you speak of is most likely Marcel Duchamp's piece titled 'Fountain.' It is considered the most influential 'artwork' of the 20th century because it laid the groundwork for preceding art movements. Not that I like the piece or anything, just merely stating facts.

I agree with you that contemporary art is BS because ANYTHING can become art these days. The importance lies in the idea behind the art work rather than the work itself.
