Making an external USB DVD Burner?

Is it possible to get a usb2 enclosure with power supply, then a IDE dvd burner and easly make an external burner?

Is this avail? or are they only for harddrives?

I dont want to spend 150 + on a lame external dvd burner.

i think will get this, It has a metal case which is nice.
Unless there is something cheaper out there that is the same, ( metal case, usb2, ide, external power )

yep they exist, just get a 5.25" enclosure, it can fit a dvd burner or a hard drive! yea make sure the one you get has a fan. i got the nspire one from cty.ca for $29 USB2 version. it has blue lights on the side and flash when data is being read.

You can do that no problem, you just have to make sure that the chipset of the enclosure you're buying isn't an outdated one like the ADS external enclosure which has a compatibility problems with quite a lot of dvd roms and burners. Can't find the thread for that enclosure though to give you an idea which chipset to avoid.

Just keep in mind that most external enclosures massively cheap out on their chipsets, so that full speed recording is impossible. 8x would likely be your top speed unless you happen to get really lucky.

That's why I always recommend "wasting" ~$150 and getting a drive that does the job right.

Thanks DD. Greatly appreciated. I want to make sure that I get the best bang for the buck. ( and i do currently burn TY's over 8x from blankmedia)


Has anyone out there gotten more than 8x on the external chipsets? If so which brand and model?
