With Asus, I have always found out that pictures never give them complete justice. The built quality is top notch, and you can only determine that by having one in your hands.
In the looks department they are usually quite sexy.. but go and touch one.. and then you'll know what sexy really is.. ;)
C., getting a smooth ride on a Asus M6BNe/15.4" WXGA WideScreen ~~ Intel Pentium M 1.8ghz Dothan 2mb L2 Cache ~~ 2x512mb Kingston DDR PC2700/333mhz ~~ ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 64mb ~~ Toshiba 60gb 5400rpm 16mb Buffer HD ~~ Li-Ion 8cell + 2nd spare battery !!! :D

Gf has the M6BNe, hinges are starting to get abit loose. I'm gonna try to tighten them soon. Is there any service manuals that show this (there's ones that show removal of CPU, mini-PCI and ram)?
I think I'm going to upgrade her HDD soon, it's a 5400, prolly get a 7200rpm. Her CPU's the 1.7/400 and w/ 1GB DDR, so that stuff's fine already. Wow, this is wierd, I checked her mobile 9700 specs, and apparently they're better than the mobile X600!

The Mobility Radeon 9700 is just a clocked-up Mobility Radeon 9600. The X600 is about the equivalent of the 9600M.

But I would only assume the X600 being next gen, supporting more features...
Then again she doesn't do any gaming, but then again Vista is coming out :D

I only game on my desktop now so getting a notebook with really good graphics wasn't a priority for me. It was all about portability, all round performance and of course the killer looks. I don't think changing your GF's HD to 7200rpm is really that necessary.

Took the words out of my mouth...
Remember that a faster HDD will mean a hotter HDD, you really don't need that on a laptop.

Yes, the temps do seem a tad high. I'm getting anywhere from the 50's- to low 60's range. Surprisingly though the white seems to really work with the silver. I certainly love the whole look of the notebook but a nice metallic finish would have been sweet. They also threw in a very nice messenger bag and the wireless siver mouse made by Logitech

I thought the extras were included, at least that's what ASUS' site is showing.
Overheating? I've seen a Z33A before and no problem at all. Runs high as 50 at full load. Oh, it's a P-M 740.

The overheating seems to be the real issue with the z63a from everything i've read but i'm not that concerned about it. Yes, the bag and mouse are included. The mouse has an on-off switch on the bottom so you don't waste the battery.

X600 is previous gen, X1400(x600 replacement I believe), x1600 (x700 replacement) are next gen. Don't touch anything less than an X1400 if you want to play any game made in the last 2 years though.

Still waiting for a decent laptop of any make to fill the medium size 15" widescreen gaming/mobile gap. Nothing out there.
15" widescreen
Duo Core/or the new AMD X2 mobile
Decent graphics
I believe the Asus W3V or was it W3J (not out yet) may come close.
Basically if you want a proper desktop replacement (with gaming involved) you have to go big 17" with Dell XPS/9300/9400 or one of Acer Ferrari models (which are now getting long in the tooth)...

X1400 is about on par or slower than the thing it's replacing (X600).

Oh for sure :)
Has some neat hardware decoding (not really a terrible enhancement as the CPU can easily take the load of H.264 decoding).... I'm sure there are others.. The X1600 looks promising though as the X700 is no slouch...

Do ASUS (or anyone for that matter) offer a higher resolution than 1280x768 in the 14" form factor? I've seen a 15.4" compared to a 14" and the difference is quite noticable.

Ok, i'm really loving this notebook but i have one complaint and that's the washed out looking screen. Sure it's very bright and the screen is glossy but i'm having a tough time correcting the colours using the intel 915 colour correction. I'm wondering if anyone uses Rivatuner to set colour? If so, what are your settings for red, blue green?

Hey Gang,
What are the must have utililites for Asus notebooks? What are you using to read temps for example ? I'm currently using mobile meter. Maybe there's something better? LMK
Well Notebook Hardware Control seems to be a must have utility for controlling temps. If you don't have it you can download it HERE (http://www.pbus-167.com/chc.htm#anchor_download)
Did you just answer to yourself???

I've got an Asus M6BNe, with a 1.7 Pentium-M Dothan, 1GB DDR333, ATI Mobility Radeon 9700, and a Toshiba 80GB HDD and 15.4" Widescreen (1280x800)
Got it last March, still working great, my only complaint is because of the "finish" on the laptop, I've noticed that it's beginning to dull under where my wrist sits (specifically under my WSAD keys :D)
Anyone have any suggestions on what I could do, it's fairly noticible, are there any wrist guard stickers or the like that would look good on the black case?
Thanks!

Yes, my old love the M6BNe it was tough letting her go but she went to a good home. Actually it was the member above you Tharyn. Cyber6 is giving her lot's of TLC now. There must be places that sell palm rests. I'll look into it.

I have the 1.8 Ghz version.. :D :D .. and I do looove my baby.
Mine is still looking like new. I am the second owner (Serge being the first). I really have no complaints about this baby. When bought I had some heat issues, that were resolved with a Bios update. Since then I get mid 40's temp consistently.. and mid 50's under heavy load. Don't know what to say about the "dulling" of the wrist panel. I'll do some research and post back.

Yeah, only my space as far as keys go.
I think my wrist areas rubbing off faster because I'm running a 7200 rpm HDD, so it gets warmer, heh, ah well, it's not TOO bad.. but those wrist rugs are pretty cool..

My keyboard is slowly fading, though as of now, just the matte and textured keys are getting shiny and dull. But it works fine, one of the best keyboards I've ever used, second to my poor T21.
Good thing for brushed aluminum wristrests on the V6 ;)

Hey coriolis, thanks for the great faq section on NBR you created. Lot's of useful info on there. Asus owners check it out if you haven't already http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=25849 I'm getting some very good temp readings right now :)

You should try to keep ur laptop as cool as possible. I believe heat killed the harddrive on my last asus notebook (diff model than yours) [ran it under the sun, 55C+, ran it over night using BT]. now i use my desktop for BT and got a different laptop (12" ibook) it's a beaty! :D
Other laptops I'd LOVE to own are:
10" fujitsu P7000 series (sexy little beast) ~$2300?
12" IBM x40 (small, tight, excellent build package!) heavy price tho ~$2300
12" Asus Z33A $1300
[yes i'm a ultra protable mobile freak. i think anything over 12" is not a laptop]

Why I love my ibook:
Small. full size Keyboard. Mac OSX. the mic. polished pearl white. style. minimalistic. cute. girls love it.
why I would never sell my ibook!
the mic! I record lectures and they are very good quality - comparable to actual professional voice recording devices.
Also becuase it doesn't play many of the latest and most addictive games, i can't get into them while i study XD.
build quality is excellent but they left handrest area seems to squeak when i put my wrist there.
and it's built by asus manufacturers!

Actually my temps are running much better now cpu 40's -low 50's thanks to coriolis and some of the little utilities he advises on using. The HD is still a little hotter than i'd like 50-55c sometimes but overall it has improved. Those 12'' notebooks are very nice indeed but their just too small for me but yea very ultra portable for sure

I sit at the front rows if the prof doesn't use a mic. if the lecture hall has good loud speakers and the prof uses a mic then u can sit anywhere (just not near students who talk)
The only thing bad about it is that if you sit near students who talk a lot then u're going to pick them up as well.
But most of the time i sit in the front row cuz i concentrate better, record better and take better notes :d
the mic on the ibook is one of the best! I know people with asus or fujitsu laptops that cannot record as great quality as my ibook can. it's like a 5 vs 1 ratio in quality.
if you're in uni or college, this is the best laptop for education!
6 hour battery life (lowest brightness level, no wifi, no Bluetooth) = good for 6 classes in a row without outlet. with wifi, maybe 5:40-45 hours. I love it!
G4 Powerbook is going down. only thing is has is slightly higher specs, a great keyboard and quality build. :cheesygri also has really low battery life 3:30-4? hours

I also built a Z62F for my Dad based on the Core duo cpu which is very nice, although the screen on the Z62F isn't quite as bright as the screen on my notebook.

I have set my z70va screen saver to blank ... I have notice that when my screen saver kicks in ... I see some backlight problem with my screen. I see white light around the right edge of the screen, from top to bottom ...
Is this normal because I have seen the dell threads where a lot of people are concern with backlight issues with their LCD monitors? Is this something I should be worried about with my Asus ...
can i return it or exchange perhaps if it is an issue ??

Right on the nose. The W3 logo is reserved to only the white box systems. The Built on Asus will not have any reference to the original chassis.
Since the Z63 is a built on Asus, then.. Serge is right.. he must be very special to get a Z63a with a W3 logo on it. :D :D
