they say h.264 is better, but it's nowhere as popular as divx and xvid

i feel the best would have to be rmvb's the quality is just as good as divx and it's half the size! not a problem if you don't plan on playing movies ona standalone player, b/c i'm not sure if there's one yet. i saw an rmvb version of Fearless (jet li) and it was beautiful, has eng subs too. i also have south park 1-8 in rmvb format and that should fit on 1 dvd. each ep is about 37 mg's. the quality iss 8/10. but still great considering their sizes. Everyone should encode with rmvb. it's the only way to go.

My vote is for Xvid also. Xvid = free/open source > Divx = $$$.
Sure, DivX/Xvid isn't the best, but it being almost universal makes up for that. Same with MP3 over AAC.

Keeping it in the original format would give you the best quality.

h.264 currently has best quality when comparing similar sized files
