There are websites, but apparently they're not realiable.

You're stuck calling every broker out of the phone book...

Not really. But if you haven't had any recent coverage, be prepared for some quotes whereby the agent sounds like he/she has just seen a ghost.

It's true.. new car + no insurance history = high premiums.

hmm well i think it depends on how they view me. i've had insurance coverage for sometime as a secondary driver on another policy, but i will be buying the new car under my name so i will need a policy under my name as well.

I *THINK* if you are a secondary driver, then it counts in your favour.. but if you were listed as an occasional driver, it won't.

I think you are mixing up terms there. But in any case, whether you were an occasional or secondary driver, it counts towards your insurance history. As long as you were not listed on the policy as an excluded driver.

Yeah, pretty confusing. You will probably have a better experience if you call these companies rather than trying to use their websites. Although it can be time consuming. They ask a lot of questions.

yes i was the secondary driver on the policy. good to know i have insurance history as the rates w/o are pretty high.

also found CAA has a service as does the APA (I *just* signed up and requested an auto quote so we'll see how it goes).

You could try using kanetix.... you put in your information and they'll give you quotes from various car insurance companies for comparison purposes.

There quotes aren't usually 100% accurate - but they are usually very close so it is a great first pass comparison tool.

i jus finished doing a bunch of quotes, some with what you mentioned, and some others

here's my conclusion
kanetix gave me 3 or 4 quotes but all averaged around $7500
Meloche Monnex $7800
RBC $8400
Wawanesa $3655
Belair - site was down
State farm $2400 altho when broker got a hold of me, it was $2000 more than the site quoted
PCF $7400
Company im currently with $3900
cheapest one was one called Economical at $3200

i currently pay $3035 but all these quotes were for a different car

23 male, 7 years insured, squeaky clean record

not the same but gives you an idea, dunno how old you are but on my part, i have the most perfect driving record and cleanest insurance record that a 23 year old can possibly have

I highly suggest getting a quote from Belair Direct.
