View Full Version : Obeying The Stop Sign

So when you come to a stop sign, do you come to a complete stop (like you're supposed to :cheesygri ) or do you do a "rolling stop"?
The reason I ask this is because, when I was driving the other day, I was doing rolling stops since there were no cars anywhere near the intersections, and there were a lot of stop signs in the area. Anyway, my passenger told me that I shouldn't do that, and so I started coming to a complete stop every time. The guy behind me began honking his horn at every stop, even when I didn't come to a complete stop. (And when I had to wait for another car to go through, he went around me and through the intersection). So basically, my question is: At a stop sign (when you're the only car at the intersection), do you
A) Come to a complete stop?
B) Do a rolling stop and continue on your way?
By the way, if the guy who was behind me (in a black Civic) is reading this:

I too often do rolling stops.. but complete stops are the law.
People behind you honking will not pay for your traffic violation.

yeah that's true. the honking doesn't even bother me that much. at one point i went 20 km/h between stops just to show him that it could be worse :cheesygri

or grab the bat from behind your seat and see how pissed off he really is  I was riding shot gun when a guy honked at my brother for doing 30 in a playground zone, so he slowed down to 15. The guy held his horn, floored it around us, flipped us the bird. It was ok though as there was a cop about a ahlf block down who saw the whole thing  needless to say we waved and yelled "have a nice day" as we went past at 30. Guy probably got a good 30 over speeding ticket plus the illegal passing ticket.
I stop, on the motorcycle I make the point of putting my foot down on the ground although I can stop and go with out it you need to be in a complete and controled stop.
I an guilty of not comign to a complete stop when turning right at a stop sign or red light.

always come to fall stop. i hear too many stories about a cop being around the corner and getting in trouble. i figure that the 4 seconds i save from doing a rolling compared to a complete stop will even out when iam caught one of those days.

Guy probably got a good 30 over speeding ticket plus the illegal passing ticket. And later that night made a rant thread on RFD about it.. and claimed it's all the cops fault.

Hey! I was in the black civic!! Just joking! I always come to a full stop. The guy who was honking you is an idiot...it's not your problem if he is in a hurry. Don't they give demerit points for failing to stop at a Stop sign?

My window points to a four way stop (1 side being an exit from a school). Often the cops show up around 8-9pm (just when the sun set) to hide and give out tickets. I hear back to back "wOOt wOOt(s)" and you know what that means :) Quite distracting when I'm trying to study.

Always do rolling stops, never been stopped for it in over 13 years of driving. I know it's technically illegal, but I am an otherwise law-abiding driver, with a perfect record to prove it.
Just lucky so far, I guess. I do make sure that intersection is clear before proceeding, I even slow down approaching green lights to make sure someone isn't going to run the red facing them.

only stop if:
A - to give right of way (to car which stopped first, if going straight in parallel direction then no need)
B - cop

my record is clean for a reason *knock on wood*... even though i've been in accidents that are never my fault.. i've always stopped completely when possible... a fine and 3 point hit are too much...

i usually do a half-ass rolling stop, but if I ever get caught, I would learn my lesson and do a full stop. I also do full stops in school zones,

Technically, you are supposed to come to a full stop (it will be a bit like a slight whiplash effect to your body), but in real life most people don't do this.

Most of the time, it's rolling. But there's a couple of them around the neighbourhood that I ALWAYS do a complete stop as I know a couple of hot spots where the cops love to camp out, and well hidden. But most of the time, it's really really slow but not a dead stop :o

I believe it's 3 demerit points in Ontario (http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/driver/demerit.htm) - I don't know if there is a monetary fine. I have a few friends who have been caught as well.
Too bad cops don't give out AirMiles or have sales when they hand out tickets. "Metro Toronto Police - 7 Days of Deals!"

i noticed many many ppl these days don't do complete stop at stop signs now. Even I reach to a 4 way stop first and do a compete stop, the other guy will just do a rolling stop and make a turn before I start move. And I thought stop signs would make a road safe. Always wish there would be a cop there to see it.

i always come very close to a stop or full stop at stop signs.... ever since i got busted for "failure to stop at a stop sign" years ago, i've learned my lesson.

If I come to a 4-way with other cars, I'll do a complete stop (let the people who are in a "rush" roll ahead of me).
If I come to a stop sign where I know cops tend to be around the corner, I'll do a full stop.
If it's a stop sign with no one else else around, I roll.

If I'm driving manual, then I'll tend to roll through. Of course there are the exception, 4 way intersection, turning on a street with traffic, school zone.
However if I'm driving automatic I always make a full stop. I don't understand the need to roll through if all you've got to do is put your foot down on a pedal for a sec, and then step on the other one :)
and I can't even count how many times I've seen cops roll through stop signs, talk about setting an example...

I've also heard that you have to stop for 3-seconds before proceeding, but I found nothing stating that in the MTO hand-book or highway traffic act.
If that were the case, we'd all have our licenses suspended!

yeah I believe that's just what the driver instructors teach, just take a look around and proceed if it's safe

In my neighbourhood there is actually a cop that i see everyday in his "invisible" cop car hiding behind a wall at the entrance of some townhouse to catch people doing rolling stop. I see him everyday at lunch time when I head out. There are always other cops around my area catching people doing rolling stops because there are SOOO many stop signs.

I always do full stops at Stop Signs and Red Lights when turning right at the intersection. What annoys me is the people in our neighbourhood. Almost everyone never stops at the stop signs at all. Not even rolling stops. I would hate to see a kid get run over one day by these jerks.
