Mar 30th, 2006, 10:38 PM
starting TOMORROW, FS will be selling McAfee VirusScan 10.0 (2006) for the PC for $40, less a $40 MIR (reg. price $60)
FS ($40): McAfee VirusScan 10.0 (http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10065899&catid=10678)
FS $40 MIR: http://www.futureshop.ca/Rebate/rebateform.asp?RebateID=2295110065899&logon=&langid=EN
$25 MIR from last wk's sale is avail: http://www.futureshop.ca/Rebate/rebateform.asp?RebateID=2234910065899&logon=&langid=EN

so it's like "free" after MIR, but u'll be paying taxes on the $40....
not sure, but i seems like FS has a "free" after MIR promo every yr for McAfee Anti-Spyware and/or VirusScan... well, not too sure if its "every yr" but i did buy the 2004 version (v. 8.0 i think?) McAfee VirusScan for "free" after MIR like 2 yrs ago just to try it out...
i believe it was 2 $30 MIR that i had to deal w/ btw... this 1 only has 1 MIR.

Cool! I may get one.
I had an extremely hard time trying to get a McAfee rebate for an upgrade deal a few years ago. Ended up calling the company that handled the rebates (down in California I think?)... ended up getting nothing back.

So other than paying taxes and stamps/envelope for the rebate, it's $0 is it not?
Sounds like a win-win for a new program.

we, as true RFDers, consider it only as actually FREE if u don't have to pay taxes/stamps/envelopes/etc ;)
if u have to pay taxes on the MIR, we don't really consider it as "free"
Sounds like a win-win for a new program.
yes, *IF* u get the MIR, that is....
i'm like 95%+ for FS/BB's MIRs thus far... so i'm happy :)

What do you mean "If" you get the mail-in rebate. Takes some time, but I've never had that problem.
I'd like to see FutureShop pull that one over me ...
"Sorry we cannot honour your rebate" ... riiiiight ...
This case they'd have no reason to so.

i said "if" b/c there has been some RFDers who have had prblm's w/ FS/BB's MIRs...
for me, not that i recall of (i think i did, but that was a LONG time ago and the rebate amount wasn't that significant... like $10 or $15)
some of FS/BB's rebates might take a while alright, but they have come for me ... :)

well, in case u do have a prblm w/ the MIR, u can always show the proof of the "rejected rebate" to FS, complain to them, and perhaps u can get the rebate refunded "on-the-spot|" (via. cash, CC/DC)... of course, only if the rejection of rebate claim was "invalid" that is....
(this has happened to a few ppl on RFD and that's how it worked out for them)

according to $25 MIR form:

Rebate amount paid to customer for single or combined rebate offers may not exceed the purchase price of the McAfee product. One rebate per product per household. McAfee, Inc. is not responsible for lost or misdirected mail. Tax not refunded. Please allow 8 weeks for delivery. $25 CDN maximum rebate. Rebate status toll free number: (866) 880-9644 or visit www.mcafeerebates.com. Be sure to keep a copy of your rebate submission for your records. Any inquiries regarding this rebate must be made within 6 months of the offer end date. FS22349
i'd suspect the $40 MIR to have same/similar terms/conditions.
but, if u wanna buy 2+, just use diff. MIR addy's.. :)

if ur in the east, it's prbly after midnite now i.e. March 31st already!
rebate form will prbly say the offer date is valid from "Mar 31 - Apr 06", which means if u made the order now, u'd be w/n the offer period... :)

Yup, they offer this every 13 months it seems. But Staples had this for $25 with a $25 rebate about half a year ago.
Hehe, you could ebay it to get the taxes back, and possibly a few dollars more.

If you don't want to deal with rebates, your local computer store will probably have the OEM version (ie without box) for ten bucks. Here in Calgary memoryexpress.com (http://www.memoryexpress.com/index.php?PageTag=&page=file&memx_menu=EmbedProductDetail.php&DisplayProductID=6747&SID=) and oemdepot.com (http://oemdepot.com/Itemdesc.asp?CartId={388C63E9-D2D7-43D7-B915-935A2A75D8E6}&ic=SOFMAF%2DV1000&Tp=) always have it on for this price, so I suspect it's not uncommon. Of course free is better, but the whole rebate thing is such a pain in the a$$.

i had sort of the same prblm w/ a McAfee rebate (the 2004 v.8.0), bought it when it was "free" after 2 $30 MIRs...
but it was a prblm b/c there were TWO rebate forms involved and both req'd a UPC...
one $30 MIR came but the other was "rejected" b/c of a photocopy of UPC prblm... just had to phone in and clarify and maybe send in some photocopies of my records...
the MIR took like 6-8 mths to come, but it did work out eventually...
this is 1 MIR, so less prblms should arise.

well, i know in 2004 they had the McAfee VS for $60 less 2x$30 MIRs...

By "they" I meant computer stores, not just FS or BB. One store or another always has the software for free after a rebate at one point in a year. Same for norton it seems.

not for me. it was an upgrade for mcafee I had bought on-line, so all I had was an email. they just plain refused even though I gave them the invoice # and all. Plus it was so difficult to talk to them over the crappy VoIP phone they were using.
So I figure they owe me money. I'll get it back some how!!!

actually, i was for a v. short period of time... b4 they made some real big changes to the membership program i think...
i went for the "free trials" and that was basically it... didn't wanna pay for a whoppin $100+ /yr for membership...
well, if i can somehow negotiate and get them to drop it down to some ~$17/yr (instead of ~$17/mth) like some that have managed to, maybe'll i'll join again... :D

seems like antispyware does little more
Protects your identity from being compromised Detects persistent and offensive
Internet promotions Monitors your PC for changes in security settings Prevents unwanted programs from reporting your Internet activities
Updates automatically to protect against new threats
for $5 what the heck I'll take both

well, i can tell u that when u install McAfee VS, there's usually a "level of protection" rating when u access the McAfee VS security center... it tells u the rating (X.X /10) for each "type" of protection - VirusScan, Anti-Spyware, Firewall, etc...
and if u only have VS, only that will show up as an 8,9, or 10/10 rating... the rest shows up as 2 or 3 /10, which means "low level of protection".
well, anyway, this is the old old McAfee VS v.4 (2004 i believe)... so VS basically provides has a v. low level rating for the "other types of protection"...
this newer v.10 McAfee VS might be slightly diff.

Once you get past the install phase, its a good program. It does drain resources though, and takes hours to do a scan, so thats why I do that over night or something. And I have it turned off *well something still runs in the background* when im not using it.

I got my $25 rebate from the VirusScan/Ufile combo that they had around that time just this week as well. My rebate for the antispyware should be coming soon too. They actually sent emails confirming they received the rebates within 2-3 weeks of sending them, so seems pretty well organized.
Now if I could just get around to installing the Mcafee software, it'll be a pretty good deal.
