I have a 2001 intrepid. I believe the gas tank is has a capacity of 64 liters. I filled up my tank the other day and Ive driven 300 km since then. My tank is already at 1/4!!! At this rate, i'll only be getting 400 km from 64 liters of gas!
Is this normal? or should I take my car back to the dealership to get it checked out? (I just bought it used on monday.)
I'm going to have the tires rotated this weekend cuz i heard that could make for better fuel economy.
Thanks for any input!

i get about 400km to a 60l tank, but I'm driving a 4.8l v8 Mercury Grand Marquis.
Cleck the fuel economy online for your car... if you're in the general area (because 99% of the time it's advertised better then it actually is) you should be okay. Few things you can change to increase economy off the top of my head:
-Keep all your tires full and hard (max PSI)
-Ensure air filter (and other filters for that matter) are in good condition
-Ensure engine oil is good.
Oh, and i should also mention. Your car is newer, I.E. fuel injected. Thus, the computer automatically adjusts the fuel consumption based on the temperature (colder temp = more gas burned to start car) and it's been pretty chilly here in t.o. so that might be *part* of it.
*edit*
also check your weight. I know/think a friend of mine has an intrepid (mid 90's model) and he burned a shitload of gas when I was driving with him, but then again, the car was full of hockey equipment and 5 bodies. Point is, check if you are/were carrying any extra weight you dont need.

I've got an 04 and I'm finding less then stellar gas use as well. I think I'm getting a little over 400km for 3/4 tank

for you rfd'ers who are experiencing poor gas mileage, where are you buying your gas from. The reason why I'm asking is that my wife drives a 2004 Mazda 3 GT Sport and was only getting 300km's on 45L of gas  , until I stopped getting gas from Sunoco (to much ethonal I guess), she is now getting 450km's or better!!!! :)

I went today and filled up the air in my tires to 32 psi (the recommended amount). On the gauge when you're filling up air at the gas station, one side has psi and the other side says kg. What does the kg mean for the car?
As for where I bought my gas, I just only got the car on monday, so I've only filled it up once. I filled up at Sunoco on winston churchill near britannia. Today I'll try filling up at a Canadian Tire or Petro Canada to see what happens. Does anyone have any recommendations as to where I should fill up to get the best mileage? (assuming one company is better than another)
The engine is a 2.7 ltr v6, so it shouldnt be burning through gas with such a speed!
My dad's 2003 camry has a 2.4 ltr with a 70 ltr tank. He gets nearly 700 km on a tank of gas, even with the rush hour traffic either way to/from work for about an hour each afternoon. THAT's the kind of mileage i want :P

I very much doubt that sunoco is the only reason you were getting 100 km/s less on your tank. I think it has more to do with your driving habits.

Wife drives a 2002 Intrepid with the small (2.7? v6). That sound similar to her mileage as well.

I filled up today at Petro Canada. I'll track my mileage from petro as compared to the mileage i got from Sunoco and I'll post. I sincerely hope the 400km/tank isnt what I will be getting on a consistent basis.. 6.2km/ltr is WAY below the advertised mileage!!

It does sound low to me. I used to drive a Chevy with a 3.1l 6cylinder and consistantly got 10KM to the litre, and this is all rural driving.

i drove a 2001 intrepid for 2 years, and it's the mileage one should expect from an american made car.
For the past year, I've been driving a Jeep liberty 3.8L and in winter I can only do about 250km on a tank!!! That thing is heavy like a tank, has little insulation so I have to keep the heater on all the time, rear window defroster also.

yup thats the reason my neighbour is selling it. He said he expected this summer, gas will be at least 1.30 So he cant afford it no longer.
On a side note, my 02 Accord has 3.0 V6. Full tank is only 55L i make at least 500KM. If its mostly highway driven, i can easily get 600KM
And i'm already prepare to sell it. Most is due to the car is kinda old not, but also the fuel consumption. I will get either Honda Fit or the new Civic.

On my saturn ('92) I get about 550km's mixed city and highway driving. I believe it has a 42L tank. In the winter goes down to about 400 - 450km's.
Your getting around the correct mileage out of that v6 car

2000 2.7L Intrepid(same model)
http://oee.nrcan.gc.ca/transportation/tools/fuelratings/ratings-details.cfm?id=5284&attr=8
City 11.7 L/100 km (24 mpg)
Hwy 7.4 L/100 km (38 mpg)
Take the avg = 9.55L/100km
400 km should require = 38.2L of gas(idealy)
Depending if u're driving in city. 46.8L
Also, most of those figure from energuide is inaccurate. With their hwy speed as 90km/h or something. I'd say u should be averaging 10-11L per 100km.
Have u checked ur air filter.

Have you actually done a manual calculation?
At 300KM if you fill the tank how much gas do you put in? That will also help you.
This is because on a lot of cars the gague is not linear, therefore it will be slow from Full ---> 3/4 then fast down to 1/4. On some cars when the low gas light comes on you still have 8-10L in the tank, this is to help prevent you from running out of gas. Some cars can also keep going for like 50km after it hits E though obviously that isn't reccomended.
But it also depends where you live, like here in Vancouver we have lots of hills so 300KM from the tank isn't actually too bad at all. But you're in Ontario so you should probably be getting better Fuel Economy than me.
If you do a lot of short trips too, that can also impact your economy as the engine never fully warms up to give you the best efficiency.

I have had the same experience with Sunoco, meaning really poor gas mileage. With any other brand, I get far better mileage with similar driving.
