I'm trying to help my dad narrow down choices for a new car, and his main requirement is a car with good lumbar support. He has a civic right now (2001), and though he sings it's praises, he just can't stand the seats in the car - any drive over 20 minutes hurts his back...

Now, I really don't know which cars to narrow it down to, but as an example, he sat in an Odyssey and told me that's exactly the type of seat he's looking for - problem being, he has no use for a van - he also sat in a new accord, and he didn't like the seats - so hopefully this gives you guys a gauge on what I'm looking for...

Any suggestions welcome - and no suggestion is too wacky - European, American, Japanese - I don't care, I just want a range of choices for him to try... The only thing he will not touch is a Chrysler.

Why not just get one of those ObusForme seat cover things?

he's tried a variety of them, and none of them work for him...

I actually said that to him the other day, he got mad at me and said 'I've got so many of those pieces of crap that I could open a store selling them'... whatever that means...

The 7th Generation (current) Accord has a manually adjustable lumbar support on the driver seat. Next time he's in there, look at the side of the driver's seat between the front seats.

The BMW 3 series (after 2003, except 320i) has a powered lumbar support as an option, but I believe you need to get the Premum Package which gives you the standard memory powered seats.

The M3 (after 2003) also had width adjustable seats on top of the lumbar support as an option.

I've got one of these (http://www.sitincomfort.com/obforcus.html) in each of my two cars...it makes a world of difference for back support, and it's better than any standard car seat that I've sat in.

The best seats I've sat in for lumbar support were in a Volvo V70R.

Coming a close second, new BMW 3-series with adjustable lumbar in their sport seats...

Not only does a bump come out to fit your lower back, they squeeze you in laterally around the kidneys too, so you'll feel very comfy, no matter if you're 6'4" skinny guy (like me) or a 5'10 300 lb guy.
