I am in the market for a new Honda Odyssey and I have been talking to about 5 dealerships in the Edmonton area. The prices are pretty much what i expected, but one dealership wanted my credit card # before giving me a quote.
I said no, if you want my business let me compare your deal to that of the others I have. They would not budge on the CC #, and I insisted on why? And said I would come in person and discuss the quote, but give me a reason to even come to their dealership. I then asked the salesperson to get the manager to call me. The salesperson calls back and says her manager said not to even bother coming into the dealership. Nice, I guess they must be doing very well to not even bother with me.
So, has anyone else been asked for a Credit card # to get a vehicle quote?
I don't think that that is good practice and am thinking of complaining to Honda Canada about this dealership.

Scam, I'd say.

Go to this dealership with the persons name and tell the highest level person of the situation.

There is no reason your credit card number is required.

it's a common tatic and it's just a way for them to know u are serious about buying before giving you their quote. they dont like to give you their "deal" to you without ensuring you are serious.

it doesnt really hurt since they can't charge it. not sure how true it is, but ur sales supposedly shows ur cc to the sales manager to let themknow u are serious and in return they give you a serious quote.

It is one of the tactics, but it's not a "common" tactic especially with all this news on identity theft. If you really want to know if you're getting a good deal, pay the $45 fee and use www.carcostcanada.com

Walkaway!

Even if they were going to save $500 off the next cheapest dealership the harrassment and belittlement isn't worth it.

I know invoice price on the 2006 Odyssey and still not getting a great deal, the best is $1908 off MSRP. They are selling nicely, and if I don't buy, someone else will...
But there is no way I am giving a salesperson my CC# over the phone for a quote.
I said I would come and talk to the sales manager face to face, but was bluntly turned away.
I am more upset with the way they treated me, they were the only dealership of 5 that requested a CC#.

SCAM!

* 2

Honda could possibly give you a discount or some kind of courtesy gesture for the attitude from that dealership.

Just give a fake cc #... I can't imagine they'd do an authorization on it anyway, so they'd have no clue if it's the right # or not!!

But yeah.. that's pretty shady

One of the most common sales tactics is to force the customer to give up his/her credit card before getting a quote. Car dealerships don't want it for security, to show your serious, or anything like that. The only reason they make you give it up is that it puts them in a position of POWER.

Its all part of the elaborate psychological game they play to try to break down the negotiating position of the buyer.

If you're not into playing that game, just leave.

-Don't give your credit card number on the telephone, by electronic mail, or to a voice mailbox, unless you know the person with whom you're communicating or you initiated the communication yourself, and you know that the communication channel is secure.

What's worse, is when you get a noob salesman that's only been working there for 3 months, and calls you back every other day asking if you've already made a decision.
