I tend to get the cravings for salty snacks a lot, but it's common knowledge that too much sodium is bad for you.

Now, does the craving sensation mean your body is low on salts and that you actually need to eat something salty? Or is there no association, and I should just ignore the cravings?

Also, what would be a healthy salty alternative to potatoe chips?

It could be a phase that you're going through. I've gone through all the phases, spicy, salty, sour (lasted a long time) sweets (constantly). Sometimes carb cravings have to do with a blood-sugar imbalance which can be curbed with a suppliment called chromium picolinate you can get at nutrition stores..

no worries.. but a high in sodium diet is not good for you..it causes you to retain a lot of fluid.. increases your heart pressure, heart disease, kidney stones, which can be damaging...

I used to be a chip junky. Just keep stuff like that out of your house. Most foods have more than enough salt for you. Since I gave up the crap(and started exercising more) about a year ago I've lost 73lbs, lowered my cholestol quite a lot, enough to have my doc take me off the meds. My blood pressure is down and I look and feel better too.

Most salty snacks are terrible with high sodium, fat and little to no nutritional value. Better off not eating them.

I've still not found a replacement for potato chips though, I'll give in and eat a small bag once a month or so as a treat. They taste even better now that I don't eat them regularly.

I don't think it's a phase, I've always liked salty snacks. I get a craving for sweets occasionally too, but not nearly as often as for salty food. I always assumed it was my body telling me that I needed something.

air popped popcorn, you can control how much salt/butter you put on it and by itself without the butter/salt, it is actually a good source of fiber. Microwave popcorn has all kinds of nasty stuff in it.

Yup I hear you.

I am not a fan of sweets, but when it comes to salty snacks I can not resist. Chips, beefy jerky, dried cuttlefish, cheeze popcorn.

Man it is tough to resist, especially when there are so many threads about poutine, burgers etc...

LOL, ok.. they might not be phases.. I wish I could constantly eat everything people mentioned here.. and I used to .. McD's omg, would eat 4 Big Mac's in one sitting, Doughnuts, CHIPS CHIPS CHIPS, and meat, I love meaty food, or meat just on it's own. Thats how I got to 250lb's.. I controlled my cravings and exercised.. lost 95lb's.. but lately I’ve been hitting AYCE sushi places...

Make sure you go on an all cheese diet for the next 3 years. Try to avoid vegitables (especially the greens) and fruits, these natural things from mother nature are the main causes of all cancers in the world.

Also make sure you eat 8 healthy portions of red meat a day. Avoid fish as much as possible.

Oh and don't forget to eat a lot of white bread.........

For drinks, drink lots and lots of soda pop.

At alot of the big superstore and bigger grocery stores you can buy these heathy crisps that look like fries and are crunchy.
they are low in fat and salt and super tasty.

or if you are really cheap and want something "healthy"

take some whole wheat pita or white pita and cut into triangles and brush w a bit of oil and put some seasoning on it

low salt (mrs dash, herbs, sugar + cinnamon)

or brush w garlic butter and put in the oven for 5 min or so until they are crispy!

what about baked lays??

you can also find baked tortilla chips that are good at natural/health stores, made by "Garden of eatin" I think?

Try Skinny Sticks made by Cool Fruits....they are healthy and sooo addicitive (usually about $2.50-3.00 at loblaws)

www.nspiredfoods.com

Also, heathy cheese puffs:(also available at loblaws +natural shops)

www.robscape.com

they are sooo addictive I can't keep them in my house without everyone coming here and eating them..now I'm going to go and buy some tommorow

dam- RFD!

I'm a sweet freak, but my salt/crunch addiction is sunflower seeds. I eat them everyday at my desk, I'm referred to as The Squirrel. I think seeds are reasonably good for you and these ones aren't too salty. At Halloween I change to pumpkin seeds for the week :) I might eat chips once or twice a year and they have to be Miss Vicky's., especially the honey & garlic.

Nuts are a good alternative. They have a lot of good health benefits.
