I will be in the area with a friend on the weekend. He is pretty much a "meat and potatoes" kind of guy and likes more or less simple food. However, I am a lot more open to different types of cuisine. Can any one recommend a good restaurant in the area. I am not a huge fan of chinese food (or vietnamese) but I like Thai food. He has never had thai.
Price range.... would rather spend less than $20 a person.
Any suggestions??
I was thinking of bringing him for some sushi, but, I am not sure if he would enjoy it or not.

well are you looking for a nice environment or something?
Anywhere across queen you can easily get indian, chinese, japanese.
If you want fancy go to king street and just take your pick.
However my personal recommendation is BBQ express. It's not a restaurant its more of a take out place.
For 7.99 you get your meat, rice, fries, and 3 kinds of salad. The portions are HUGE.
As for the meats they do souvlaki, chicken breast, bugolgi, wings, and ribs.
Try to Bugolgi is sweet marinated beef (a korean dish)

I am looking for something with decent decor/decent food. I would rather stay away from King/John street area as I find the places overpriced for what you get.

Try EAST, across the street from City TV , very reasonable prices, fusion/asian food (there is plenty of meat on the menu though) and excellent decor, service

From Spadina & Queen, you really should head west to avoid overpriced and underwhelming fare.
If you want a fun diner-esque experience, Try Shanghai Cowgirl:

It sounds strange, but the food is quite good, and is a fairly varied menu.
The absolute best food in the area is Gandhi Roti, which is near Queen & Bathurst (554 Queen West, just east of Bathurst). There is very limited seating, and the decor is nonexistent. However, the rotis are absolutely amazing. They are freshly made, offer a wide variety of fillings (meat and veggie) and are HUGE. They range from about $6 to $13, and could easily make up two meals. It may not fit your requirements, but Gandhi is the best place in the neighbourhood.

In case you've never had Korean BBQ, there are gas burners in all of the tables... they bring out raw meat and you cook it yourself. They are sliced thinly enough that they cook quickly. If you've never been it's quite an experience. :)

I second Gandhi's best roti place in the GTA bar none. I live in the area and make a trip out to Gandhi's at least once a week.

Any other final recommendations? I am going to be going today... Probably a late dinner (around 9:00pm...) so something not too heavy!

I ended up going to the Space Cowgirls place. Interesting decor, the main waitress we had was far from "friendly" but overall service was okay. As for the food, we both ended up ordering burgers. The fries were really good. They were thinly cut. The burger was pretty decent also (however, I asked for Mayo on the side and they assumed I wanted EXTRA mayo on the side and put it on the burger still... that kind of annoyed me).. I had a chocolate milk shake too... haha... I haven't had a milkshake in a while and I saw it on the menu. It was pretty good.
I don't think I would go again though. I like trying new/different places..

There's a hole in the wall place on the northwest corner of Queen and Spadina - just west of the McDonald's - called Shawarma King. It's got a red and yellow sign and is a totally scrungy looking place, but they serve up an absolutely awesome beef shawarma. Mmmm.
