Thank You RDF! I had once again sold off my old Nikon lens to fund a new lens!
Anyone own a Nikon 85mm f1.8 or f1.4 here? Care to show some pics? Canon 85mm are welcome too! hack, if you have a leica, by all means!
High chance I will be getting a 85mm f1.8, but still contemplating if i should get the 50mm f1.4 instead... f1.4 is really sweet, but I am going toward the 85mm, just love it for portrait! Any comment on that?

I have Canon, but sold my 50mm f/1.4 because I felt it was too crowded with a 30mm f/1.4 and an 85mm f/1.8 already. The 50mm f/1.4 was a nice lens too.
If anything I thought 50mm was a strange focal length on crop/DX sensor bodies. Not long enough and not wide enough, which is why I kept a 30mm prime and an 85mm prime.
These are some recent shots from my 85mm.

Wouldn't the 65mm or the 105mm be better for portraiture? I've used the 105mm and it's fantastic. Although, I'm not sure what applies if you're going digital.

The 1.4 & 1.8 are very similar in sheer resolution with the 1.8 slightly better than the 1.4 at the mid range f number. If you want to compare, the 1.8 is a little bit harsh and the 1.4 is more fluid. Bokeh on 1.4 is totally circular wheres 1.8 is polygonal. This feature alone make it worthwhile given it is within your budget. If you can afford the 1.4 go for it otherwise 1.8 won't disappoint you with its price.

I have the 85 1.8 and loved it on my film bodies. On my digital slr though, I find that it's a little too long for portraits, as you need a decent amount of working room for framing. Outdoors this isn't really an issue, but in confined spaces, it's alot more work to get the shot your want. Since going to DSLR though, I have missed having the wider FOV I used to get from my lenses... just another reason to buy more lenses...
