Hi guys,

Just wonder, how long does a timing belt last usually?
Also, what things would reduce the life of a timing belt?

Reason why i ask is that, i was reading an ad for a 1998 civic hatchback that had only 74k kms, but recent work includes replacement of the timing belt.

They usually last around 100k. If an 8 year old car with 74k had the belt changed it was probably due to age.

Things that increase the wear on t belt:

-Heat
-Uneeded idle time
-Age

a 98 civic with 74k doesnt neeed its tbelt changed until 150k, but the owner chose to change it early, its all good for you the buyer.

Honda has found their tbelts have a lot of life in them at the usual 100k interval, so they have moved it up to 180k I believe (dont quote me on that).

that is not true... always do it at the scheduled time.. i had my belt broked from a civic.. it cost way more if it does break for most hondas are interferance engines.. it is not worth it, a tbelt change cost roughly $300-500 (depend where u take it to). where as ii ended up paying over 1000 replacing the waterpump, broken belt, and recieved a few bent valves(almost a rebuilt)..

lucky you, i guess its also about how you drive your car aswell right, i mean if your redlining it every gear every time you drive it, of course your gonna run into premature problems...

Majority find tbelt changes are not necessary until 150k for older hondas and newer ones even more.

But hey! its your car, you do whats right. And I do change my stuff on time, but I was just stating the things I heard.

Also with honda engines, its good to have the valve adjustments done every 80k or so.

My Honda indicates 168k or 7 years under normal driving conditions, without extreme heat or extreme cold.

The belts are reinforced rubber, and they deteriorate over time. Honda engines are interference engines, in that the valves will hit the pistons and cause considerable damage if the belt breaks while the engine is running.

I had a Chrysler product with a Mitsubishi V6 engine that I did not realize had a rubber timing belt until it broke. Fortunately that was not an interference engine, and the break caused no engine damage. My buddy at Dr Honda explained how lucky I was at the time that it was not a Honda. He has seen his share of broken belts on Hondas.

Hey,

What are valve adjustments? I dont think i ever got that done..mine 99 civic. Do we have to ask for adjustments or they do it them sleves?

I got my timing belt changed at 140k, for $400 + service + some repair = $970.xx

I went in at 100k they sent be back home, they said honda timing belts last long and recomended to chnage at 160k but to be safe change at 140 or 150.

its dependent on the dealer, does it not say on the invoice, valve adjustments made?

Driving in Canada is not normal conditions, ALWAYS use extreme conditions for reference when performing maintenance on your vehicles. Defentitely change that timing belt, otherwise you too will be faced with bent valves, if not worse. Valve adjustment should be done every 30-40k, especially if you are hearing the valves tapping/clicking, otherwise premature wear will begin, so just more preventative maintenance.
