I have a 1992 Grand Am that is in need of a water pump. I don't want the car anymore and am looking for the best value for it. The Scrap It program sounds like my best bet (12 months of 1 zone bus tix for the car) BUT my car needs to have failed Air Care. I have not failed Air Care before and was wondering if there is any way to guarantee a failed score? My other problem is that without a water pump I don't know if my car would go the distance to get to the Air Care station. I know this sounds crazy but any tips would be great :)

Why not just sell it for whatever you can get?
Say, $300-$500?

I am. However, $300-$500 cash is worth less than the 12 month 1 zone bus pass. I pay $69/month for one of those right now :(

get under the car and drill out the contents of the cat, that will make you fail for sure.

Sell it on RFD.

or take out the cat
sell the cat
pipe thru it
sell some parts of the car
and stuff
might as well make some money off a car that govnt will take for a set price

Pull the O2 sensors and wait for the car to set off the check engine light.
Or you can drive into the test centre without a gas cap (automatic fail in Ontario; should be the same in BC?).

easiest way is just to disconnect the o2 sensor, car will automatically start to run rich

It can't be that much to replace a water pump? just a few hundred bucks?
I can't believe an OK condition 1992 grand am would be worth less than $1500. Replace the pump and sell it in good condition.

That's what I think you should do to, or just sell it as is right now. Is the extra few hundred dollars worth the trouble?

Put a couple teaspon of used motor oil in exhaust pipe. When you drive to aircare, doesn't matter how good your cat converter is. It will be burning oil.

Hi there -
I have same problem as you - did you ever figure out how to guarantee a fail?

This must be a first...
Gut the cat
Pull the 02
Find some old fouled spark plugs and run those

LOL I was thinking the same thing...
Usually it's "how do I guarantee a pass" not the other way around. I thought this was pretty funny, though it's clear there is good reason to actually fail in this case.

All you have to do is unplug 1 or all of the O2 sensors & the "Check Engine" light will stay on. You fail AirCare. How badly is the water leaking out of the water pump? Will cooling system "stop leak" seal it up long enough for you to go to AirCare & the ScrapIt yard? Good Luck.

Sorry to revive old thread but I'm in the same boat now. Trouble is the car already went to Air Care and passed it last month, and it says it's good till next year. I want to make a hole in the cat. convert. but would they allow a retest even on a pass?
