I'm sure there are better (better in terms of value, i.e. prices and quality) Japanese All You Can Eat restaurants than Home Made Japanese Restaurant (literally Dai Kumamoto) near Warden & 16th (50 Lockridge) in Markham/Richmond Hill. I've been there twice, really nice. But I just don't want to go there for the 3rd time tomorrow, please render your opinion. Thanks.

AKINA- at Kennedy & Denison SW corner (SHOPPERS/ORIENTAL FOODMART)- So far is the best. Not only they still offer 15% off (under $20/person incl tax & tips). But they do offer beef sashimi & mackerel sashimi.

The selection of hot items are great. They have deep fried Osyter in case you are interested. Grilled squid is recommanded. As well as Japanese style squid balls. In fact, this is the place I end up ordering more hot item than Sushi & Sashimi.

About the Sushi & Sashimi, they are pretty good as well. The fish is pretty fresh, and the selection is good. And I love their beef sashimi, it is fat and melt in your mouth. If you never have it before, you gotta try.

Soup-wise, again, they are good & tasteful.

And once in a while during dinner hour, the owner will make special dessert for the day which is not on the menu. And he will come around w/ a tray, and asking if you want it. Last time I was there he offer us Á¤¥Ä¼²¥¤ (it is kinda Chinese dessert made out of milk. is kinda like Milk pudding, and the solidify process require the use of ginger juice) which I bet none of the AYCE place offer that... And yes, it was good, very good in fact.

I've been going to Akina for the past half a year or so, and to me, is the best kept secret around, since I can't explain why nobody on this forum seems to go there.

Their cooked food is the best I've had (beef teriyaki, beef short ribs, grilled baby octopus etc), and their excellent tempura is based on what you order, so if you order shrimp tempura, you are only going to get shrimp tempura, and not a whole load of vegetable tempuras as well. Their spider roll and rainbow roll are really good. They are also pretty generous with their sashimi portions - whenever I order a certain number of pieces, they usually give me a few more slices.

I think the best thing about Akina is the service, pretty friendly, and hardly missing out on your orders. The seemingly permanent 15% off can't hurt either

Compared to other more professional AYCE sushi reviewers here, I probably am not doing justice to Akina, but I think the place speaks for itself. It's definitely better than Yang's in terms of food and service, and is better than Sushi on 7 for their cooked food, but don't have as much raw fish variety.

Hi guys, its been a while since i have indulged in ayce japanese... but how is this place, homemade japanese etc?

I had been to KAZE a couple weeks back and although for dinner i believe its $17.99, it was quite good, reminding me of the Sushi on 7 days before they got super busy.

Anyone else been to KAZE @ 16th/woodbine? I was really hesitant to go, but for lunch, the rolls and cooked fare was better than i expected.

I went to KAZE with my wife and we were ultra stuffed. The food was great and the service was AMAZING! Everything came really quickly and plates were constantly cleared out. Luckily we live up the street because we ate way too much!

It used to be a nice, little place for Japanese food BEFORE all this All You Can Eat fuss. Really good (quiet) for week day lunch.

Hi guys, its been a while since i have indulged in ayce japanese... but how is this place, homemade japanese etc?

Went there a couple of days ago... decent food, but service was unbearably slow. Had to wait almost half an hour for one round of orders when they were swamped (Saturday night, place was packed), in addition to telling them to check up on the order several times.

Homemade has more soups than most AYCE places.... there's miso, a seafood (miso?), and another one with beef in it. The only things that stood out in my mind was the grilled chicken skin... which was disappointingly fatty and not crispy. Oh, and the tamago was rather enjoyable :cheesygri

We were a party of 6 (2 were seniors), and the total bill was roughly $120.

Yup Kaze has lunch, (at least on weekends) for 10.99 I believe... Don't quote me on that but i THINK thats how much it is, and the only thing lacking is sashimi. However unlike most places, the normal nigiri sushi isn't a huge honkin wad of rice with a sliver of (insert raw fish here) on it.

(if anyone had been to SON7 when they had that sweet ebi nigiri sushi, they will know what im talking about)

I'll try to review, but im:

1. suffering from a flu/cold and can't accurately smell/taste very well.
2. trying to tone up for summer
3. car is dying so im saving up for something newer..

so if anything, i'll review kaze (unless someone beats me to it) in april sometime... but overall once i saw their rolls, i litterally said to myself, woah this is a flashback of son7.... if anyone can tell me if their sashimi is decent, i'll give it a shot........

Japanese Ayce Price List --> great idea.. some places are still charging ~ $20 and still serving same ole same ole, nothign special stuff (ie. syogun, nagoya), some places retardedly cheap and really bad (mariko on bloor, katsu), so i think it would be benificial to list places that ARE STILL worth going to.. ie, i once recommended sushi hut, but now that place is for the dogs..
I once said akina was crap (when they were at hwy 7/kennedy) but now since they moved (kennedy/denison), they are better?..... well thats what ppl say anyway..

Gunnerx, good to hear the food was decent and that u live close-by, minimized the chance for accident on the way home! haha

What's the price oflunch at Akina prior to 15% off?

I believe it is $11.99 for lunch everyday, and $17.99 for dinner on weekdays, $19.99 for dinner on weekends.

Basically, you don't pay any tax, just the 10% tip.

this location is closed anyways, you can see from their commercials they now only show kennedy/14th location and their sign has already been taken down, I think there is going to be a new japanese restaurant opening in their place soon because they have already put up their sign and seems to be rennovating

Went to Akina AYCE on Saturday and it was pretty good. The food selection was pretty extensive in my opinion, I think they had just has much selection as Wasabi. We got there around 6:30 and it was pretty empty, probably about 20% of the tables were occupied. That was great for us because it meant that we could order quicker and the food came quicker.

By the time we left which was close to 8:30, I know we stayed over the 1 hour, 30 minute time limit, the place was packed and there were probably about 20 people waiting at the front door. In the end, we ended up paying about $23/person, it was 10% off rather than 15% even though 15% was advertised but we weren't going to argue the extra 5% considering how much food we scarfed down. I think the 4 of us ate equivalent to the table of 8 beside us.

My beef with all sorts of variety of rolls out there is that their names NEVER reflect on what's in there. I like the places with large roll selections but 9 out of 10 times you'd have no idea what's in it until either you asked some disgruntled servers, or until it comes to your table. They really should just cut the cute names for those

Been to Aji Sai (Bayview location) twice, food is not bad generally. However, on my second visit, I went there around 11:30 or so (just opened), and they were cleaning the floor (or something like that). I almost never return to restaurants with such poor practice.

Not sure if you're trying to make a joke or not, but I think he means the poor practice of cleaning the floors during hours of operation while foods being served to customers and not before/after.

It's one thing to mop the floors if there's a spill, but if there isn't and there's customers eating, then it's just poor hygenic practice.

Since I don't like crowded places or waiting to be seated, I very often go to restaurants earlier (like 11:30 AM or even earlier on weekends). And I have come across places when you would see them still doing the cleaning. Yes, I could understand the situation: restaurants usually open late, and it's difficult to ask your staff to clean the floor late in the night. But at least PAY them to work earlier, i.e. earlier than your business hours (e.g. if the restaurant opens at 11:30 AM, start the shift at 11 AM). It's quite a statement (of not welcoming if not insulting early bird customers) to say the least.

EDIT: I forgot the name, but the Vietnamese restaurant on the 2nd floor of Times Square in Richmond Hill did that around 12-ish (they open at noon I guess).

i actually was bored of yangs and SO7, so i went to home made sushi...no reviews from rfd besides this post, so i really didn't have much to go by...

the price is pretty standard "18.99, 2$ extra for fri, sat, sun", 10% service charge included in final bill

the mackerel they serve there is really, really fishy...don't get it unless you really are craving for mackerel sashimi.

the salmon was cut funny, not really block like, but they have cuts in them...it was the first time i've ever seen it cut in such a way.

desserts were ice cream, red bean, green tea, mango, vanilla.

What I DO like about the place a lot though...is that specialty drinks are free on the menu! strawberry slush, mango slush, taro slush, any pops, red bean ice cream drink, and iced milk tea with tapioca! (although that day they ran out of bubbles. >:()

no biggie, i drank about 3 drinks that day still :D

A good change of pace, if you're around the unionville area, imo.

I actually forgot that I started this thread. :embarrassed:

But you may have missed the boat: Home Made Japanese Restaurant has CHANGED HANDS. I went there a couple of weeks ago, and can tell out right that not only the servers were different but more importantly the FOOD looked and tasted differently, and sadly significantly not as good.

Yes, they keep the menu and pricing, as well as the name and the decor (again, noticeably less clean though), but the Home Made Japanese Restaurant I knew and loved was gone. Now, it's just another mediocre (actually less than decent) AYCE Japanese restaurant.

They do have beef sashimi at LUNCH, and the now watered down bubble tea is still free, but I probably will NOT go there any more.
