A couple places sell the OEM version with 3 year warranty for less than $10 more. But if you can get a decent PM on this it could be hot.

EDIT: Found it for $200 at FS. LINK (http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10036132&catid=10484)

Definite RE-POST.
Search Maxtor 200GB and you will find the initial post with a whole load of ideas of where to get Price Matching for a cheaper drive than buying directly from BestBuy.
I got mine from Staples last Friday with PM and the final price came out to be $93 (taxes included).
If you buy from BB ... it would cost $103.49
Try PM with TigerDirect, Canada Computers, Future Shop.
Definitely land you a way better deal than buying from BB now.
Keep in mind ... this is a RETAIL Drive ... NOT OEM.

I don't think it's a bad idea to start a fresh thread. The other thread started on a different PM, and you have to go threw quite a few pages to get to this PM.
PM with Future Shop:
199.95 - 89.99 = 109.96
109.96 * 10% = 11
89.99 - 11 = $78.99
Good price and no MIR.

funny thing is for hd retail makes it a worst purchase, i.e. 1yr vs 3yr or 5yr warranty. nice deal though.

199 - (199-89) * 110% - ecoupon or
199 - ecoupon - (199 - ecoupon-89) * 110%

Doesn't hurt to try if you can sneak it pass them... but I believe you can use the ecoupon if the net cost meets the minimum coupon requirement.

Not a very logical argument! Are u saying the manufacturer's warranty = the product's average life expectancy? Can't agree on that.

Yeah, wasn't it Tommy Boy who said "I can SH*T in a box and throw a warranty on it, if that's what ya want, but wouldn't you rather buy a quality product, instead?" Or something like that.
I had a car, that had a warranty for 3 years or 60 000 kms and you know what, it is now out of warranty, and hasn't cost a thing...
I have a tv whose warranty expired over 8 years ago, still no problems...
Now I probably jinxed myself!

unless the price of retail HDs are significantly cheaper than OEM HDs, i'd rather stay w/ buying OEMs ....

Oh, so the warranty for OEM hard drives is longer... thought the article said that usually the warranty is the same.
I would wager to guess that they extend the warranty for OEM, so they can entice dealers/builders to use their HD's, so that in the case of failure, the public wouldn't get pissed with the dealer. Otherwise, a dealer would say, "Screw you Maxtor, I am not using your machine, so Joe Public can get angry at me, when it fails in a year..."
I mean, they are made on the same line, same factory, with the same parts... and according to their site, you have to deal with the dealer... which depending on the company/store, may or may not give you the run around about Manufacturer's defect.
Just a thought...

No I am not mad but I am keeping price/performance ratio in mind rather than just NEW technology.
People seeing price/storage ratio can buy Maxtor (and yet I don't suggest it even to an enemy) but for me performance and reliability is more important.

You either have never used a Hitachi before, or you're just BSing. It's definatley worth every penny, except that if you're not using it for important data that you would pay the premium for, it's not worth it.
It's just like why some people would rather by Verbatim media and some Ritek. Riteks work just as good as Verbatims for general cases, sure their burn quality is worse and so is the longevitiy, but for most people, they don't need or want to pay more money for burn quality, which is negligable if your purpose is just to burn a movie or something.
And even then, I'd put Seagates over W.D.s, except for the Raptors. WD drives are extremely loud and extremely hot, in comparison with Seagates and Maxtors.

I find the Maxtor drive much quieter and faster than both equivalent WD and Seagate drives.

I just said what I experienced with all these HDDs. If you are one of those hardcore Hitachi fanboy then be it, I don't have any problem with that. And don't call others mad if you are one.
When I put performace and relaibility first than storage then I am definitely thinking in terms of Verbatims and TY media and you are the one looking at Riteks and CMC media.
The Western Digital SATA2 16MB cache KS/KD series drives are the best in SATA2 drives coming pretty close to WD Raptors and even better in some benchmarks. Also the WD - KS/KD series are called 'Whisper quite' drives and if you compare the noise of these drives with Seagate then you will not notice any difference. Don't even try bring in the crappy Maxtors in this comparison because it is like comparing the quitest and loudest.

Hitachi = TY
Seagate = Verbatim
Maxtor = MCC (Mitsubitshi Corp)
W.D. = CMC
Samsung = Ritek
That's how everything should be.
I don't understand how you say W.D.s are quiet when in fact they make the loudest hard drives ever, even louder than Samsung. Maxtors are among the quiestest and coolest running drives ever, with Seagate coming on par on some benchmarks. You seem to favour performance as in write speed, etc. Personally, I favour performance as in life span, durability, in which, has to do with how hot the drive runs. W.D.s are nothing but HOT, and I can't say their quiet.

I think you should read the NEW reviews of these new HDDs (SATA2) that I am talking about. And I didn't just talk about performance. I talking about both performance and as well as reliability.
If you are talking about the drives based on the performance/relaiblity of the older generation of drives then you may be right but these NEW SATA2 drives have shuffled all things up and yes WD SATA2 drives are one of the quitest drives if not less/more than Seagate.
Maxtors were OK in my books too but I've had many terreble experiences which had me fed up and I never would want to go through all that again.. :!: - Enough said.

For $90 (tax included) for this 200GB, it is worth! Don't tell me it is because you use maxtor and it failed for few times and you've spent lot of money without extending your warranty into it, then it should be junk...
If you have a failed HD, then you are in a bad luck! I have a Maxtor 40GB which is still working like charm and it had been here for already 2 years. I've bought this Maxtor 200 GB few months ago and it still working - you need to take care of it!

Hmm too cheap to pass up! I guess i'm one of the lucky ones that have never had a hard drive fail on me, although my 2 25gb ibm hds are clicking every once in a while.. :) My old Maxtors (11.2 / 17.2 / 60 / 80 / 2x200gb) all are still running fine, most of the older ones were on 24/7 as server drives. H#ll, even my Quantum fireball SE 8.4 and 3.2 drives are still running, albeit a little on the louder side. I like Maxtors, but for reliability i'd go with Seagate.

If you are really looking into buying something good you better do research on the net and not just blame and complain others.
And also, this thread is not even talking of any SATA drive leave alone SATA2 drives. Its the same old super crappy Maxtor EIDE ATA133 drive with 8MB cache which is atleast a 3year old advancement from 2MB cache drives.

Except this thread is about PMing the SATA model at Staples and not buying the EIDE one at Best Buy.
I don't know much about the EIDE Maxtors nor the W.D.'s, becuase I've used Seagates and Quantums for EIDEs, but switched over to Maxtor for SATA1. My mobo doesn't support SATA2 so until I get a new computer, I won't be testing those out as of yet. Speed different isn't a lot anyways, but I found Maxtor being much quieter, much cooler, and especially much cheaper than all other brands. W.D. SATA1 drives read and write a bit faster than Maxtors, but that's not what I'm concerned with. I had great experience with former-Maxtor Quantum Fireballs, and therefore picked the Maxtor for the SATA1 drive I'm running right now.
About SATA2, perhaps you're right, but Maxtor has yet to fully release their SATA2 line to their fullest extent. Reading benchmarks, Maxtors still seem to be quietest and coolest running on the general sector. I won't say much about SATA2 becuase I don't know about them, but that's what I've read from benches.

You don't get it do you? You go to Staples, pick up a SATA model, then show them the flyer showing the EIDE model on sale, and get them to match it. That was the whole purpose of this PM.
